Should Jamar Smith start over Rich McBride?
thedoctor replied to maggsmaggs's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
let jamar emerge on his own. he is clearly going to be a player for this team, but for now i'd stick with rich and let jamar develop at his own pace. -
i tend to doubt the sox will be involved in the pierre sweepstakes, primarily because i think the yankees and the cubs could get involved in a bidding war for his services. both teams are desperate and could be willing to overpay. given the option of overpaying for pierre (bmac or any other top prospect) or going into next year with anderson, i'd take anderson. the only odd thing is that whole sean henn and scott proctor offer that the marlins supposedly did not turn down. i'd think someone could do better than that.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 5, 2005 -> 11:04 PM) The cubs will overpay for Aubrey Huff and Lugo. and i will enjoy a hearty laugh.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 1, 2005 -> 05:20 PM) Vulcans are unusually strong compared to humans due to the fact that their planet's gravitational pull is stronger than Earth's. well, see, that's what i get for throwing out trekkie trivia without the proper factual backing. i think i need to start spending more time in my parent's basement...

indiana played well. when they went down big early, i thought they were going to get blown out. but they really sacked up. kudos to them for that. -

had to love this quote today from illinois recruit eric gordon: "my number one priority is derrick rose." -
he also kind of looks like a vulcan. this makes sense. if spock were a pitcher, i could see him throwing junk.

i would guess if they got gathright (hope not) it would be more as insurance than anything else because i don't see him as a regular on this team. i wouldn't mind him if the cost was cheap, but considering the amount of suitors that's probably not going to happen.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 04:25 PM) I've never understood the "guilty pleasure" thing. If you like something, why should you ever have to feel "guilty" about it? If it's good to you, then that is all that is needed. Stuff like The Monkees is great music. They were HUGE for a reason, because they turned out great Pop tunes. I should have it in my "best songs" list, but "Pleasent Valley Sunday" is pure brilliance, easily one of the greatest songs ever. Bands like Journey had talent. The songs have aged poorly (almost as poorly as Styx), but there is a ton of talent there, so there is nothing to be ashamed of. You want "bad music"? I've got a ton. It's truely BAD music. Poorly played, poorly written, just downright BAD. THAT stuff I love. A band called "Luv Junkiez" I have a demo of, easily the worst band I have ever heard! Scott Stapp, he's one that can go into the truely BAD stuff. The music behind him might be decent, but his vocals are just plain terrible. Too forced. But I have been enjoying what I have heard from that solo CD, just because it makes me laugh pretty damn hard. even god hates scott stapp.

i don't think i'd realized it before but when i saw that ebay commercial i came to the conclusion that i really like the monkees song daydream believer. i also don't mind kelly clarkson, although i admit when i put the music to the artist i was ashamed. me: wow, that was a great song. friend: really? that was kelly clarkson. the no-talent from american idol. me: really? friend: yup. me: ok. i'm really gay.

QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 06:02 AM) They look so much different than last year...last year they were so explosive. I guess it may be because they are so young, but the players, though young do not have as much talent. losing two first-round nba draft picks from your line-up will do that to a team. at least they played like crap and won. honestly i'm not worried about dee. he did not shoot well obviously, but i would agree that ginyard played some great defense on him. i also concur with krush inasmuch as i don't really care too much about his nba career at this point. when he gets there (and he will be there) i'll root for him, but for now he's an illini and that's all i'm concerned with. a few other things: -this team is much, much deeper than last year's. not as good obviously, but much deeper. -brian randle hitting those two 3s was the best thing that happened last night. i don't want to see it become habit, but if teams have to respect his outside shot (which i never thought they would) that's going to open up the lane for him. regardless, he is active and athletic as hell. we could have used him last year. -augie is a frustrating player to watch. he can be dominant, and he can disappear and be a total non-factor. maybe we expect too much out of him. -jamar smith is very good. not bad for a player who was outside the top-50. -warren carter must hang out with augie, because he's got the same "look great, then disappear" approach. -bobby frasor impressed me. would have been nice to see him playing for illinois. however, for whatever reason it didn't seem that illinois was interested in him, nor was he interested in illinois. he will be a very good player for unc. -tyler hansbrough is going to be a beast. can't wait to see him and mcroberts mix it up. overall, though, i have to say i'm pleased with what i've seen so far. illinois played like total crap defensively in the first half and like crap offensively at the end of the game. yet they won, on the road in a very difficult place to play. difficult stretch ahead though with xavier (at the uc), georgetown (at ah) and oregon (in oregon) coming up. i tend to doubt we'll be ranked at 12 after those games. -
i realized today i was attacked by the sneaky mullet. it's been awhile since i'd had a hair cut, but i didn't think much of it. i've been busy and it really hasn't been on my mind. plus i have pretty straight hair, so i didn't really notice how long it's been getting. but today i got called out. a woman i work with said "hey, nice mullet you are working on there." at first i was pissed because she's a b**** anyway. then i went and took a good look in the mirror. it appears that the party in the back has been going on for quite some time, but was hidden behind my neck. needless to say a haircut has been scheduled. beware of the sneaky mullet, though. it will get you.

notre dame is as offensively talented as anyone in the country. i do think they deserve a bcs berth. that said, i think there's a fair amount of clubs that deserve bcs berth's that won't get them (auburn and oregon to name two). i doubt anyone outside of alabama and/or eugene are going to cry if those teams are left out. fwiw, i think notre dame's chances lie in who they play. against virginia tech? very good. against penn state? pretty good. against ohio state? not so good. -
QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Nov 29, 2005 -> 01:42 AM) agreed. He was a drug addict and i think he still has kids. He hasn't been in the news about this and he has seemed to put his life back together. yeah. it's believable to me that he could have been back on the stuff. he's an addict. anyone who's been through a program will tell you are always an addict, it's an everyday battle, hence the "one day at a time" rhetoric. but i also get a little surprised at how people react to stuff like this. some folks seem to take some joy in it which i don't quite get. that's just me though. not saying i'm right. i hope his story is true. it would be a better ending than just another worn-out old athlete busted and struggling to cope with their missing glory.

QUOTE(spiderman @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 09:18 PM) Does anyone actually believe his explanation ? we'll see. he said today he was going to take a drug test. if he passes i believe his explanation. if not i don't. i won't let my opinions of him as an analyst or player influence my thinking on this. i'm sure a lot of people are stoked he got busted, which they are entitled to. i'll judge this issue on its own.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 02:48 PM) I am very interested in the matchup you mention in the end of your post. Oden is much more polished than Carlwell, who is still raw (and therefore, not quite as highly ranked as Oden, although still a great prospect) but I think Carlwell's defensive ability against Oden could be fun to watch. (And yes, I'll admit my split allegiances right now. I grew up an Illini fan, but am now a student at NIU. I figure I can like 2 teams in college at least. ) hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. lol. i think that shootout is at southport high school in indianapolis. -
flasoxxjim summed it up pretty much perfectly for me, although i will have to say that cheating sucks horribly. i was recently divorced and the divorce part of it was OK. it was for the best. i wasn't happy about it per se, but i do think that if we just got divorced and went on our way we still would have been able to be friends. this is important considering we have a daughter. but she cheated. i confronted her about it when were still married and she denied, denied, denied. when we separated she acknowledged she was "friends" with this guy, but again denied and denied anything else. as soon as we were divorced, she acknowledged they were dating. that's f***ing heartless, imo. the funny thing is, about a year ago she was convinced i was cheating (i wasn't, not even close) and i saw how torn up she got about it. then she turns around and does it. meh.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 02:30 PM) Great news for the Illini on many counts. It blows down the "Weber can't recruit" door, and also, Gordon is close friends with Derrick Rose, another 5 star class of 2007 recruit. I would be very surprised if Illinois doesn't also get Gordon sometime in the near future, and that backcourt under Weber's coaching could be terrifying in the Big 10. no doubt. rose and gordon are supposed to play against each other on dec. 17 in a shootout in indianapolis. in one of the other games greg oden and mike conley's team will take on proviso east. it will be interesting to see oden and carlwell match-up, although given his talent i'd say oden will probably get the best of that one.
