QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 02:30 PM) Great news for the Illini on many counts. It blows down the "Weber can't recruit" door, and also, Gordon is close friends with Derrick Rose, another 5 star class of 2007 recruit. I would be very surprised if Illinois doesn't also get Gordon sometime in the near future, and that backcourt under Weber's coaching could be terrifying in the Big 10. no doubt. rose and gordon are supposed to play against each other on dec. 17 in a shootout in indianapolis. in one of the other games greg oden and mike conley's team will take on proviso east. it will be interesting to see oden and carlwell match-up, although given his talent i'd say oden will probably get the best of that one. -

bruce weber deals a blow to the "can't recruit top players" theory: eric gordon chooses illinois obviously this won't be official until he signs on the line, but given the fact that illinois has always been his leader, i'm confident he will be an illini. big-time committment for illinois. -
anyone remember this ill-advised marketing scheme taken on by the white sox after the 1983 season? 1984 was all about 'let's do it again' and chubby checker. *shudder* let's be thankful we have a solid marketing team in place (brooks is the man) and we'll be spared a summer of listening to a horridly bad jingle that's stuck with me for more than 20 years. damn you chubby checker.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 04:39 AM) Anyone else watch that abortion of a basketball game between KU and Zona? Easily one of the worst basketball games I have ever seen. Might as well have been watching the And 1 tour without the tricks and dunks. yeah, that was one fugly basketball game. those teams have a lot of work to do. sasha kaun is impressive, though. -
QUOTE(Wedge @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 01:26 AM) No idea who made this trade within the Red Sox organization. That's an interesting question alone. I think this'll end up like the Pavano deal and I'm not too sure this ends so well for the Red Sox. i'd guess lucchino had the lead.
-
i'm curious if the red sox keep lowell, or agree to eat some of his contract and spin him off to someone else. i remember reading the twinkies were interested in him a few weeks back.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 12:30 AM) One could have said the same thing last season when the Yankees went out and bought themselves a couple of pitchers, 1 from the Marlins, with nasty injury histories and questions about their reliability. Look what it got them. Don't underestimate the possibility tha thte Bosox will end up regretting this for injury-related reasons. blisters anyone?

it sounds like it's the dodgers.

QUOTE(gettysburg32 @ Nov 21, 2005 -> 04:29 AM) Just so happens I don't gotta work tomorrow, and... Chaminade vs. #4 (at the moment) Michigan State - 2:30 (eastern) ESPN2, I luv the Silver Swords annual TV appearance. I guess the Spartans can at least go 1-1 vs. Hawaii teams. #9 Gonzaga vs. #24 Maryland - 4:30 ESPN2, this one would be a great sweet 16 game in March. Maui does nothing to mellow Gary Williams out and the Zags outgun the Terps in a great high scoring game. #14 West Virginia vs. #2 Texas - 7:00 ESPN2, Guardians Classic semi, could be another sweet 16 game, great matchup of styles. Texas probably wins but I'll be pulling for WVU. #20 Iowa vs. #8 Kentucky - 9:00 ESPN2, other Guardians semi, another March type game. Rondo can single-handedly fend off Lipscomb, but not Iowa. IMHO, UK's a bit overrated. #10 Arizona vs. Kansas - 9:00 ESPN, Zona's still a loaded team. Kansas will be rebuilding this year with loads of inexperienced guys, they'll be good before the year's over, but taking on UA this early could get ugly. Arkansas vs. #3 Connecticut - 11:30 ESPN2, looks set up for a Maui semi with MSU vs Gonzaga/Maryland and Arizona vs UCONN. Also tomorrow, but not on TV (in Virginia at least) IU gets a slightly more interesting exhibition game against Florida A&M. I'm a Hoosier fan (born and partly raised in Indiana) but I won't add anything to this MSU/IU fray until Indiana proves they are one of the best Big Ten teams again. (although, if Michigan State pulls a Ralph Sampson in Maui, umm that would be worth a shot or two). Plenty of reasons out there to bash ESPN, but tomorrow isn't one of them. pittsnogle! -
there is no doubt this season is much different than 2001.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 07:16 PM) Yeah, I saw that. That guy might just be bitter because the idiot reported the previous day that Cass would wait 'til spring to make the decision, even though he had already decided on DePaul. http://www.pjstar.com/stories/111705/BRA_B85ASJFR.071.shtml Still, I hope Wainwright isn't already f-ing up this early in his tenure. i'm not sure whether or not this is a violation. time will tell. i will say that it's highly unlikely this guy wrote this story out of spite. that's how you lose your job. -

i just have doubts this will ever happen. he's already having trouble with his feet and that's not the kind of thing that's good to hear before you've even played one game. i've heard a lot about rich's improvements, his weight loss and his bigger role in the offense. i'm interested to see whether that's reality or just typical preseason positivism. -

rules violation for depaul in cass signing? -
not too surprising. with a with and triplets out there, it would be unrealistic to expect him to want to stay here. thanks geoff for your contribution. thanks kw for trading for him.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Nov 16, 2005 -> 09:40 PM) Thats a good point, even "superfans" without alot of money can ruin a program, guys are springing up over the internet with superfan sites and calling their scrhools recruits bothering them all the time and asking ridiculous questions, ruining their schools chances. It gets ridiculous. true. the internet has created a direct line between recruits and fans in some instances, and i'm not certain that's really a good thing. on one board i post on a football recruit has posted regularly. even after he committed, he decided to take other visits (as i would do as well if i were in his shoes, a free trip to a tennessee football game, c'mon!). anyhow, the reaction from fans has ranged from simple anxiety to anger, all while the kid is still showing up and almost feeling as if he has to reassure fans. it's bizarre. there was a good story on this a few months back in espnmagazine that centered around myron rolle. very good story.

QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Nov 16, 2005 -> 07:23 PM) I know KU had a huge booster who kept getting caught trying to give money to players. He was basically told you are not allowed anywhere near our program. i think this is a part of the culture for really high profile college athletic programs. people want so bad to be a part of the "show" that they are willing to do just about anything to feel like they are in the program. for the average guy, that's just a pipe dream. for a guy with a big bankroll it's really not. the problem is, these people are like roaches. you snuff one out and two more spring up. if i were a college coach at a major program i think i'd spend a lot more time worrying about what the adults were doing than what the kids were.

QUOTE(illinilaw08 @ Nov 16, 2005 -> 04:57 PM) The only difference I can see between the Mason situation and Jackson is that Mason was listed as a major infranction against the University of Illinois. KU is not penalized at all for this. (Not saying they should have as the university had no knowledge of this, just some inconsistency in punishmet). I guess the NCAA has always had their favorite schools and Illinois has never been at the top of that list. that's true. the combination of this and the stuff that happened right after self got there ought to at least require a bit further review.
