Avisail Garcia is the truth.
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 08:16 AM) I'm excited about him too, but let's not make him this into the next Gordon Beckham thread quite yet The biggest reason to be hopeful, to me, isn't that slash line (anyone can get hot for ten games), but the fact that he's been selective. He hasn't started walking yet, but if he keeps his O-Swing around league average like he has, the walks will come. And if they don't, it's fine because if he's only swinging at good pitches, he's going to be finding plenty of hits anyway. Still, it is refreshing to see the Sox winning since they acquired him and him being a big part of it. When you see him get 3 of the total 5 hits in yesterdays game , instinctively you think he's already a better hitter than anyone the Sox have. Like you said , he'll have to take his walks because he'll be getting less good pitches to hit when the chance of him hurting the other team becomes more apparent. I think his 1st HR , probably an oppo one will come any day now.

Sale 6th in baseball in WAR
Rather than start a new thread I'll just put this here. This is a "what if" article. The "what if" being what if Scherzer pitched for the White Sox and Sale pitched for the Tigers this year. It's not scientific by any means. The writer just switched some game stats around. His conclusion : Scherzer would be 15-7 for the Sox and Sale would be 19-2 with the Tigers. http://www.platoonadvantage.com/2013-artic...iel-zarchy.html

Avisail Garcia is the truth.
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 06:29 AM) Hits in 7 straight games. Triple slash with White Sox? .341 / .386 / .850 But don't trade Jake Peavy - the fans will stop coming!!!!! I think he should be called AviGar.

2013 Minor League Transactions
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 07:43 AM) He will make a lot of them Not that it matters, because one has much better stuff than the other, but it's fun to look anyways Jameson Taillon - 128.1 IP, 128 K, 46 BB, 9 HR, 1.35 WHIP, 3.79 ERA Erik Johnson - 130 IP, 118 K, 34 BB, 7 HR, 0.97 WHIP, 2.01 ERA That is 20 G (19 GS) at AA and 3 GS in AAA for Taillon and 14 GS at AA and 8 GS in AAA for Johnson. I figured he would be but part of my wondering was how many starts would he have to make once he's called up to not be listed as a prospect any more much like the AviGar situation.

2013 Minor League Transactions
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 12:30 PM) Charlotte Knights @KnightsBaseball 56m Among full season leagues, Erik Johnson's 2.01 ERA (between Charlotte and Birmingham) ranks fifth in all of Minor League Baseball. I wonder if he makes some top 100 lists next year .

White Sox winner over KC threat
Garcia should get a mention since he had 3 of the 5 Sox hits and is hitting .341 with the Sox in 55 PA.

GT: 8/20. Spoiler alert in KC
So much excitement. Besides the batting average race between Dunn and Knoerko now we have the HR race between Beckham and Alexei.

Teams abandoning shift against Dunn
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 07:32 PM) Then why is this coming up now? If he's supposed to pull everything and that's the smart approach, and the one recommended by hitting coaches, then why change now ... after the Sox are 30 games out of first place or whatever they are? Most likely because thats truly the only time you can try it. Last year using his old approach the Sox were in a pennant race. His old way he got 41 HR's and 96 RBI you can't change in the middle of that. What if he sucked at it ? The precise time to try it is when you have nothing to lose.

Sale 6th in baseball in WAR
What sucks the most is that when someone is trying to say we have a great pitcher, be happy, celebrate it, it breaks out into a statheads WAR ! That WAR is the worst WAR of all.

Alexei Ramirez
QUOTE (Paulstar @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 08:23 PM) I think the writing is on the wall that he will be traded this offseason. I think the plan going into next year is to have some combination of Beckham and Seiman at SS and 2B, with L. Garcia being the backup at SS due to him supposedly being an excellent defender. I think you're jumping the gun on Semian. He still has a lot to prove.

Alexei Ramirez
QUOTE (oldsox @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 02:52 PM) He had another strong game against the Twinkies today. A lot of people on this board don't like him, want him gone, and I don't get it. I think he is still a heckava shortstop. What is the problem with him? Is it the lack of homers (four)? Geez, he is hitting close to .290. Would an extra 3-4 HR's make a big difference? Is it his 20 errors. The guy has missed something like 3-4 innings this year. Does that not count? I hope we keep him for at least a couple more seasons. Just wondered if I can get a concise evaluation of his play from those who don't like him. Thing is every player has flaws and on a message board with a bad team you're going to hear an awful lot of bad things said. With Alexei its power issues but he's like 5th in the AL in doubles. Then there's error but defensive metrics say despite the errors he's still a very good SS. Then there's lack of walks ,age ,and contract. All that being said I like him .

Garcia in Center?
QUOTE (Paulstar @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 08:29 PM) I don't think Garcia as an everyday CF was a serious consideration. I think it was just more of a spot to put him to give him AB's if they could not unload Rios, and as a potential backup option there in the future. I think the plan is to get a true center fielder out there who provides great defense. Would not be surprised at all to see a trade for Peter Bourjos in the offseason. Exactly. CF is a big responsibility. I think they know his D in right is just about perfect for him. Keep him there and he has less to worry about and can concentrate on his hitting.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 05:06 PM) I want to see these guys pick it up. Even if, sadly, it saves the job of the manager. You know Ventura isn't getting fired. Best thing you can hope is he quits. Don't see that happening either.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 05:28 PM) Phegley has a pretty low ceiling as well, IMO (and the initial question included JorDanks in it, who profiles as nothing better than a 4th OF). Now, if they go and get someone like Abreu, that solves a lot of issues if he ends up being a good hitter. The thing is, I don't see why everyone just doesn't root for games where the young players perform well, and then organizational fillers like Axelrod or Troncoso blow the game. That what I root for but in reality that can't happen every game. If say Viciedo and Garcia get hot together and Dunn ,Alexei, Beckham, and DeAza just keep doing what they have been doin the offense will win some games like it has the last 2 weeks when we get the pitching we're used to. We want Dunn to keep hitting because it makes him more movable or more valuable to use next year. It's not like we're overflowing with LH hitters. Same for Alexei , now he's showing more power, we want that to continue. Same for Beckham and DeAza ,keep it up ,finish strong. Gillaspie same thing ,I want to see him start getting more hits. He has such a good approach it's hard to root againt him. That doesn't leave too many guys where I don't care if they finish bad left in the lineup.

8.18 Sox vs Twins
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 02:29 PM) Because of the emergence of Johnson and Rienzo There are huge differences between Danks, Santiago, and Quitana compared to Rienzo and Johnson. There is no emergence with Johnson and Rienzo. There's 3 ML starts between them and Rienzo has all 3. That staff we have now is great and it will be the reason if they compete. When you have that staff you make it happy by keeping it's closer around. Better defense would help too. We all know we need hitting. If the staff can perform next year like they have this year maybe 2 more hitters will improve the team a lot. Hard to say what would help the team the most. You'd like to wait on Viciedo and DeAza is a productive LH bat but they both have issues with defense and DeAza with baserunning. Talented both but flawed in ways that don't help the pitchers on defense. I'd love a speed burner CF who isnt a liability at bat. Who's available is another thing. If the Sox feel they can compete maybe they go after Abreu and McCann .If they can get both and thats a long shot , maybe they trade one or both of Viciedo /DeAza for the kind of CF I want and use Rienzo and Johnson also as the trade bait.

8.18 Sox vs Twins
QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 12:13 PM) What day did Thome rejoin the organization?...Around the same time Dunn started to take off? Wonder if they have been talking about hitting/approach. Both very similar hitters. Sox hired Thome July 2nd, most say Dunn's hitting better started around 1st week or 2nd week of June.

Sox get a gift run and Dunn a gift double when Willingham loses sky high fly and it drops.

8.17 Sox vs. Twins
QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Aug 17, 2013 -> 05:42 PM) Dunn has a higher batting average than Konerko. Never thought I'd see the day. .240 from Dunn is unreal considering his April and May.

8.17 Sox vs. Twins
QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Aug 17, 2013 -> 05:44 PM) If Dunn could hit like this for the majority of next season.... We our either gonna be pretty darn good or gonna get something pretty darn good in return for him, maybe even over the off season as well if he stays hot till the end of this season. At this point the Sox really can't afford to let him go. Without him the lineup is really bad . no power at all. The best thing that can happen is keep Dunn sign Abreu and have a solid LH-RH punch in the middle of the lineup. My only worry if Dunn wont hit as good being just a DH unless ABreu gets equal time as a DH but I think he's more signable if you tell him he'll be playing 1st.
