  1. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 06:37 AM) Logically, the argument shouldn't be about height, but rather standing reach. That doesn't really help Viciedo's case as he appears to have alligator arms. Correct and logically the taller you are the longer your reach is. And I don't see how anyone can state that having a longer reach doesn't make a noticeable difference. . How often do we see a 1st baseman jump losing cotact with the bag and the runner safe ? . How often do we see a 1st baseman stretch towards the incoming throw barely catching it before the runner touches the base ? How bout throws off to the side ? How about catching the low throw before it hits the dirt because of that reach ? How many extra bases will runners advance because the shorter guy cant reach the ball and it becomes a wild throw ? This should be common sense to people .If having a taller guy gets you 10 extra outs a year I'll take the taller guy. Not getting outs when you could leads to big innings and adds runs to the other team . Big innings lead to loses . Any loss can be the difference in making the playoffs and having a chance to win it all. Any advantage is a good advantage.
  2. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 5, 2013 -> 07:59 AM) If I was making any sweeping generalizations, I think you are right to ask for some more evidence from me. But I'm not -- I'm simply talking about how Viciedo has taken a step backward offensively this year. That's an easy argument to make since all of his production-related numbers are worse, but since he is young and NOT a finished product, I'm trying to demonstrate a willingness to look beyond his numbers to see how his approach has differed. You and I both know that he swings at too many bad pitches, and if you look at Pitch F/X data, you see that he is swinging at more bad pitches than last year. I'm not aware of any research that tries to determine if successful players get better by learning to swing at more bad pitches, but that's probably because no one has felt that such research needs to be done. As for Garcia, I'm quoting that number in comparison to all of the Major Leaguers currently. You can look at the leaderboards and see that his pitch selection numbers rank in the top 10 worst of all Major Leaguers, and that really only Carlos Gomez is having a decent year among all of those in the same neighborhood -- leading me to believe that his approach may murder AAA, but there's little to no precedent for it doing the same in MLB. Garcia belongs in the Majors, he's been there before and has nothing left to prove in AAA, so I'm evaluating him like a Major Leaguer. You don't hear me spending much time talking about Courtney Hawkins' rates, for example, because he's 19 and has so much more to figure out before I can evaluate him like a Major Leaguer. Does that make sense? I know I'm clear as mud sometimes. I don't see how you got that I wanted a study on how to be sucessful by swinging at more bad pitches, that would be pretty silly. I said take some players who who've been around a while whose contact rates may' ve started off bad and see how they've progressed and how contact rates correlate to their better or worst seasons. I know as well as anyone that swinging at bad pitches is not a good thing. Certainly we both want to see improvement. Garcia is great at hitting strikes so force pitchers to throw strikes otherwise take your base on balls. Hawk always talks about hitters getting themselves out and how Tommy John was great at that. No one likes seeing Phegley flail at pitches in the dirt so often. You said you don't evaluate Hawkins because he is just 19. Garcia just turned 22 in June and already was sucessful in high pressure situations like the ALCS. I guess I'm just more optimistic about how Garcia hits strikes than I am pessimistic about how often he swings at junk. But once he learns to lay off the junk, he'll be a beast.
  3. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 08:20 AM) In 102 games, the Sox have used 70 different batting orders, and no one order more than 6 times. And that's pretty much all based on injuries , it means nothing . It seems like a lot in a vacuum but if you put it against other teams 70 in 102 games is nothing.
  4. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 05:49 AM) Olney tweeted this morning that Dunn would be the perfect fit for Texas. No rumor, just his thought. It'd be great if Dunn passed through waivers and we could get something for him while also shedding his contract. Same thing a lot of us here said when Berkman was hurt and threatening to retire and we knew Cruz was likely to be suspended. Peavy Rios and Dunn were all perfect for TX.
  5. Nelson Cruz and his 27 HR's will be accepting his suspension thereby saying bye bye to his team mates for the season and showing he's more interested in free agency. Rangers inactivity to get a hitter at the deadline makes no sense. Kiss playoffs bye bye and window of opportunity to be a champion.
  6. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 08:02 PM) Soooo you were going for that reaction, aka trolling for it. If that's what you want to call it. That's subjective. I don't think what I said was offensive or meant to provoke an emotional response. I've seen a lot worse around here. Nor was I emotional in my statement of fact. That's all it was.
  7. QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 07:56 PM) http://www.milb.com/multimedia/vpp.jsp?con...05&sid=t494 Garica HR for Charlotte. That was yesterday. Today he went 0-4.
  8. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 07:27 PM) I think everyone saw you drawing conclusions from your statement. Nah can't see what's not there . I just made a statement of fact. I know Boston and Detroit are in positions to use who they got and we are not. Sometimes I just like to provoke conversation just by making a statement and seeing how others react to it. Everything I said was a fact. I never said Garcia should be with the Sox .
  9. QUOTE (hi8is @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 04:03 PM) With all due respect... What does it matter if we have no trade inclusion contributing at the MLB level at current time? Just a statement of fact. You didnt see me drawing any conclusions did you ?
  10. QUOTE (TitoMB @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 04:49 PM) Just wait. We're gonna turn it on in September, finish with some "respectable" record, and push ourselves out of the Top 10 draft picks. It won't happen . I've seen a few people say this (unless it was you more than once) but I don't see it at all. Imagine if the Sox make waiver deals and we see Dunn, Rios, Lindstrom , Alexei or any combination of them leave. You think we're bad now , I think we can finish with 105 losses.
  11. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 02:18 PM) Keppinger because who would trade for him? I voted Keppy too because he's signed to an affordable contract and is useful for bench strength .Alexei too expensive for the bench . Dunn has proven he hit's better playing the field and keeping him at DH is a risk so he's moved if at all possible. Rios moved to make room for Garcias.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 01:35 PM) Iglesias' defense is unreal Now you know why I like him so much. Soft hands, very good range , quick release. Great hand-eye coordination. That's why I think his bat will catch up eventually (hand-eye) and quick bat. Took Ozzie Smith a while but the same attributes led to him becoming a much better hitter. You have to be able to look beyond the stats. Once he starts trusting his hands more he'll start getting hits all over the field . Right now his quick bat makes him a bit pull happy.
  13. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 01:14 PM) He was rounding third. He would scored standing up. Austin Jackson throws like a girl and Peralta wouldn't have had a chance. I think you better see the replay again he was rounding 3rd after the ball was in Peralta's glove for 3 seconds.
  14. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 01:02 PM) I think he did the righ thing. It was the only way he was going to score on that. He wasn't going to score there even if it dropped . He's a catcher and it was shallow enough for the SS to catch it. Maybe he's scores if he was off at the crack of the bat but he wasn't.
  15. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 12:57 PM) Anyone surprised no pinch runner ? Bench might be kind of short already so giving Robin the benefit of the doubt here. Flower's worked out well there . NOT
  16. Anyone surprised no pinch runner ? Bench might be kind of short already so giving Robin the benefit of the doubt here.
  17. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 12:29 PM) It's actually an interesting question as to who is faster. The consensus is that Iglesias is not fast, especially for a MIF. However, how slow does that make him compared to a "fast big guy" like Garcia? Garcia has definitely done a better job of stealing bases in the minor leagues and has a bit lower rate of GDP than Iglesias Every report I've seen on him rates his speed as above average .He was rushed through the Red Sox minors so his bat has some catching up to do but I think he can hit as well as Ozzie Smith did. And with his glove he'll be around a long time .I like Garcia better but there's no way I would've whined about getting Iglesias. But I value defense a lot more than some when you already have the pitching.
  18. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 12:19 PM) Yeah, he might be better than he was at some of the times he really struggled in the minors. He's still not a .300 or even .280 hitter, though, and also lacks both power and speed. Lots of pressure on his glove I think he's got better speed than Garcia and we got Garcia playing CF.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 12:11 PM) Wow, how does no one get fired for this? Shouldn't Ventura bench De Aza for that if he wants to send a message? As dumb as a play that was that De Aza made you have to admit he had a much better chance of being throw out at home than on the Rios one. That was a pretty shallow shot to center and Jackson didn't dive. Chances are if he goes a good throw nails him by plenty.
  20. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 12:14 PM) He has a long track record in minor league baseball of being a horrible hitter. Be patient. When a guy is batting .202 in Triple-A and .237 for his career in minor league ball and gets called up and starts hitting...this should scream "fluke" to you I can admit it might be a fluke if you can admit it's possible he's made some adjustments that have served him well.
  21. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 12:10 PM) But that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about how Iglesias is a bad hitter. Garcia is not a bad hitter We'll see about that . In his 1st 2 games 2/6 Hr and 2 RBI's .
  22. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 12:06 PM) No...? Meaning he's done more for the Tigers than Garcia has for the White Sox so far.
