Sox at Oakland A's Part One

Alexei kills lefties . He should be batting 2nd all 3 games. He needs the AB's to be eligible for the batting title. -
7 run 4th inning, Twins 9 Mariners 2.
-
Alexei having a hard time winning Rookie of the Month. Lost out to Longoria in June and now Chris Davis of Texas in July while batting .355 in June and .341 in July.

I don't generally make predictions about individuals. I did predict the team would need some of the young guys to come through just to reach .500. Well almost all the question marks have come through to this point (Quentin, Ramirez, Danks and Floyd) . I remember advocating trading Konerko also because I thought 1st base might be the only position Fields would be able to play and I wasn't thrilled about Swisher being the CF. Ramirez and Anderson had monster springs and I had hoped both of them would come through.

Funny to see OC trying to make Getz think he threw his 1st major league hit into the stands . -
Just guessing here but isn't Alexei hitting like .345 over the last 2 months ? That's damn impressive. I think he'll get the plate appearances necessary barring injury. Right now I'd give him about a 25% chance of winning ROY up to 50% if he wins the batting crown.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 05:32 PM) lol@Pods making it. He's one of the most disrespcted and hated on players in the history of Soxtalk. There is a silent majority on this board that shows respect for a players abilities that contributed to a championship regardless of what injuries occurred afterwards to screw him up. There was plenty of hate for Gavin Floyd also and I think people are seeing that young players in the right hands can turn things around.

I'm thinking Frank Thomas, Robin Ventura, Carlton Fisk, Mark Buerhle, Paul Konerko, Carlos Quentin, Jermaine Dye, AJ Pierzynski, Joe Crede, Aaron Rowand are the top 10 not in that order unless I left out someone really obvious. Other probables Luis Aparicio, Ray Durham, Carlos Lee, John Danks, Bobby Jenks. Will be interesting to see how many from the 2005 Championship team make it. Pods ? Everett ? Garcia? Contreras? Iguchi ? Uribe ?

The other JD lookin real good.
-
Maybe I'm giving more credit to the voters than they deserve but if CQ keeps on hitting the way he is lately and the Sox make the playoffs, Quentin wins the MVP. Still I'd rather the Sox make the playoffs .

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 11:44 AM) Nice play by Alexi to get the unassisted DP It's not an unassisted DP when you make a throw.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NE -
If more Soxtalkers had taken the time to make a list maybe a player at #2 on someones list wouldn't be weighted so heavily. And no I didn't submit a list either. I've followed the Sox longer than most of you have been alive and to single out favorites over a 40 year period made me think I'd submit the list then go "Oh damn I forgot" insert players name. Once you're on the Sox you become my favorite unless you show me you don't enjoy being a Sox ( Cabrera, David Wells).
-
I think that's a fuzzy Bill Melton in the background of the Sports Illustrated cover.
-
After the Sox got him from the Pirates, Hoyt Wilhelm ( knuckleballer extraordinaire) told Wood to use the knuckleball exclusively. Ron LeFlore shattered Wood's kneecap with a line drive which effectively ended his career though he did pitch after that but wasn't the same.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 03:53 PM) Why must Ozzie keep running Griff out there against a LHP??? Because Brian Anderson is the spawn of Satan. -
QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 09:59 PM) Jorge Orta ( to this day I'm looking for an Orta jersey) Lamaar Johnson, Jim Essian? Eric Soderholm. THAT was the squad. If I recall correctly Essian hit a rooftop shot once.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 07:45 PM) The Red Sox did too, considering they won the '67 pennant. In fact, the Yankees weren't really a factor. Selective recall as the White Sox often finished behind the Yankees.

8/7 Sox v Tigers, 7:11, WCIU

QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 08:07 PM) IIRC, this is the second time in the past week. Most people would've taken JT's ridiculously slow half-jog to third as evidence that he probably wasn't going to make it. Please bring back Wavin' Wallace. At least he knew when to send runners. That would be "moot." Unless you couldn't care less. Sorry, grammatical pet peeves. Carry on... I knew something was wrong with it . My favorite is seeing "would of" all the time instead of the correct "would've" . -

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 07:56 PM) Thats why a pinch runner like Wise was important because he would've scored without a play. Damn it Maggs. It's mute now. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 07:50 PM) Let me clarify...you only send him if you know for sure he's going to score (standing up without a throw). With one out, you absolutely can't afford to make an out at the plate. It was incredibly similar to a game at Detroit earlier in the year when CQ got thrown out at home down 2 in the 8th with 1 out. Thats why a pinch runner like Wise was important because he would've scored without a play. Damn it Maggs. -

Oh by the way I think the Bears/KC exhibition game is on NFL network on a delayed basis later. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 07:42 PM) Not really, you leave Thome in the game, since his run isn't that important. I have no problem with Thome staying in for the chance he hits in the 9th. What do you mean Thome's run wasn't important ? You pinch run in that situation. It possibly gets you 1 run closer . Having a 1 run deficit is better than a 2 run deficit in the 9th inning. If Thome bats in the 9th that means the Sox got some runs .
