I don't want to quibble over a few losses . Let's face it we got lucky last year in that Ramirez, Quentin, Dank's , and Floyd all were major contributors. That kind of luck doesn't happen 2 years in a row. I'll soften my stance to say we won't come near competing with the roster as it stands now. But there's no chance in hell it stays the way it is now. The real question is do we pick up more question marks like Homer Bailey and more Cubans with the payroll remaining basically the same or actually try to compete which has been KW'S M.O.

Thanks for the update. Maybe KW's been so busy trying to get the Cubans that little else has mattered to him. Who could blame him if this was true. Both Cubans under 30 and with Viciedo and Ramirez to supply a bit of home the Sox had this golden opportunity drop right in their laps.

Just watched the Don Larsen perfect game. Picked it up in the 8th inning. I'm watching and listening to the announcer and it occurs to me Vin Scully is the announcer . Made me really appreciate how he's witnessed so much baseball, so many historic moments and playersand he's still at it any time I want to watch a Dodger game. There hadn't even been a perfect game in MLB since 1922 and Larsen had no idea that's what it was called. He just thought he threw a no-hitter.

Free agent Rocco Baldelli no longer has the sometimes fatal mitochondrial disorder but now has been diagnosed with the less severe and treatable channelopathy. What this means to his career path is unknown but it's much more encouraging than it was.

I know the Dye/Bailey deal looks dead but found this about Bailey's mechanics http://www.drivelinemechanics.com/2008/12/...chanics-homer-b . In short his mechanics don't look so good.

Told you all Tampa Bay wasn't going to spend the money to get Dye.

Are the Yankees really that much richer than everybody else or are they more willing to operate in the red to uphold a winning tradition ? Maybe MLB should increase the luxury tax. It doesn't seem like much of a deterent to overspending.

In this economy the team willing to spend the bucks makes the big news. No surprise its the Yankees. Expect the Red Sox will be signing a few FA also.

Brian Roberts, Lastings Milledge, Ricky Nolasco

After the Swisher trade , I said this , which I still think is valid. We now have more middle infield prospects for Baltimore to choose from. Still thinking Kenny makes a big push for Brian Roberts. "This was the obvious 1st move of the off season. Does it make Vazquez the next to go ? Maybe but I still don't think its enough to fill a vacancy created by moving Javy. I think it lessens the chances of a Dye trade though there could always be an offer that KW can't refuse. I'm excited because the KW plan has started unfolding. Look for much more to happen in the next 6-8 weeks. KW also has more prospects to trade now. If you're looking for a big name, think Brian Roberts or Carlos Beltran ....." Stay tuned.

KHP , from 2005-2008 Taveras had a .000 BA on 3-0 counts in 19 AB's probably not because he was swinging and making outs on that count but I think its more like he had no batting avg because he never swung at 3-0 pitches . So any statistical analysis probably shouldn't include 3-0 batting average unless its .000 because he was actually 0 for 19 by making contact and making outs on 3-0 pitches which I think is highly unlikely.

Freddie is hurt again. Hurt his shoulder in the Venezuelan league recently.
