I'm usually not so critical but almost every time I typed something today the Sox do good. Rondon hits a 2 run HR after i see AVi hit into a DP and i wrote my previous post. But Big Lame James didn't let me down at least.

You know its bad when Engel and LaMarre are your best hitter on the day and Big Lame James if left in to rot on the vine in possibly his last chance to nab a bag of balls for him.

Stupid Sox . No way should Shields have been out there in the 7th. Take the decent 6 innings and leave it at that especially when you are trying to move the guy. Sorry meant 6th and 5 and even after 3 HR's he's still in there for the 7th.

I'm not saying he sucks out there but he doesn't have much speed and there are no glowing reports on his defense . They all say he is pretty much just OK out there . Then you add in the fact he will fill out and get slower plus the fact the Sox has some very good defensive talent in other outfield prospects who if they pan out become much more likely to play the OF than Eloy. I can see Eloy playing OF for 1 or 2 years but after that I have my doubts. Lilian started the whole 1st base thing i think and Parkman is the one who says he sucks out there ( sorry Parkman if it isn't you) .

Just speed alone doesnt but speed and defense does and the injury history and the fact he is still in the minors. Just my opinion too early to offer him an extention based on his hitting alone. Different eras when teams weren't as conscious about the ramifications of offering guys long term deals based on what they had previously accomplished and paying for down side of careers. Many expected JD to get much bigger offers but not being a great 2 way player limited what he eventually got,

But only really had 1 team offer him that. He was pursued without much vigor. He's the best comp for Eloy and he had a few years in the majors before he really figured it out.

You mean like Gordan Beckham ? ANd hundreds of others who ended up flashes in the proverbial pans.

Eaton and TA both had speed and much of Eaton's great season with us was on defense. Speed defense and hitting got the Sox a lot of value back for Eaton but Eaton knew he had a bad injury history and that's played out since he was traded. TA also has speed. not as much hit tool as Eaton slightly above average defense but less injuries. OBP not good. So again pretty good on both sides of the ball. I know how great it is to think we could have another Frank Thomas as a hitter but how likely is that ? Still have to weigh the hit and power tools against the defense and run tools plus some tendency to get injured. JD Martinez should have been given huge bucks but wasn't because all he can do is hit. I'll stop raining on everyone parade now.

Oh yes it would but when you have agents who want the big commission they probably downplay the downside to a hitter like Eloy and tell him you have to believe in yourself and it takes a strong minded individual to weigh the good against the bad . To a young kid who believes in himself he might not be looking at how his defense will hurt him or his chance of injury when all around him are telling him how great he is.

If true then it supports my argument more that it would be much easier to offer an extension to a young great 2 way player than it would be to Eloy who only does 1 thing really well and thats hit. He isnt a great defender or runner. I love the kid and think he will be a great hitter but plugging the DH hole or 1st base when the Sox have a lot of defensive potential in other OF prospects possibly doesn't warrant an extension to Eloy this early.

Yea not a lot of real strong right handed hitters in that lineup even with a lefty on the bump.

I can't remember how good of a fielder Longoria was back when he signed his extension or how high his injury risk was. Being a corner OF or even a future 1st baseman and his injury history I'm not sure I'd be putting Jimenez in Longoria's class. But its probably the closest you can get except for Kingery who is also an infielder.

All were a win as far as I'm concerned but none were still in the minors when extended . They still gotta show that ability up here before I'd approach them about being extended. Kingery isn't exactly tearing up baseball as of yet. Longoria signed after 6 games in the majors and management won that deal .Tons of older free agents or international free agents bust management loses. Jonathan Singleton signed 5 yrs $10M players hated it but, guess what ,Singleton won and you could also say management won because whats $10M to them ? it's all about cost certainty where a player can win if he ends up sucking or hurt and management isn't paying huge dollars for old free agents nor big bucks for when a promising kid gets hurt or just never lives up to his potential.

Sure but I never said that they get a lot of men of base because that would go against the whole lack of walks and hit tool thing. It was meant more in the context of the offense being bad and the guys they actually do get on base aren't getting home often enough to have big innings . We're on the exact same page . They have bad hitters and guys that don't walk enough and also play crap defense and many of them will be gone soon enough.

But none of those guys were still in the minors when they extended them and an argument can be made that they jumped the gun on Anderson. You also forgot Eaton

OK ? Isn't that a given considering they don't walk and don't hit for average either ? Wasn't that what I just said ?

You really think that ? Already ? I mean I believe in Eloy as much as anyone else but why would they ? There's still a chance he becomes less than we expect and a chance of some catastrophic injury . In the event something bad happens then that money is wasted when the Sox might really need it . I know you might argue that if Eloy doesn't make it we are screwed especially if Moncada doesn't figure things out but still what's the rush ?
