Frank Robinson RIP
Those Orioles teams with the Robinson Brothers. Frank and Brooks Robinson were so damn good. That 1966 team that swept the Dodgers in the World Series especially great. Then that 1970 team wow another great team that beat the Reds in 5 games. RIP Frank.

2018-9 MLB off season free agency thread
But he was a lot suckier .Nova WHIP 1.28 Shields WHIP 1.309, Nova 4.19 ERA Shields 4.53 ERA, and most importantly Nova 32 yrs. old in 2019 Shields 37 so potential suckiness goes up. Estrada 5.64 ERA and 35 in 2019. Liriano ? Wow so you're worried about money that the Sox can easily afford over a better player ? How bad do you want the starting rotation to be ? Giolito most likely the worst starter in baseball last year . Rodon coming off injury year, Lopez. the only bright spot. No one wants Shields yet. Liriano almost a 1,5 WHIP and will be 35 Estrada coming off a terrible year 5.64 era AND 1.477 WHIP and also 35 in 2019. I hope you realize the importance of having some reliable guys in the rotation Might as well line the bullpen up for the firing squad. Again wonderful guys for spot starter or in case of emergencies but not 4th starter.

91 innings for Hellickson last year because of injuries. Great Sign him to be 5th starter but he doesn't replace the 4 starter like Nova who pitched 160 innings. No one wants to pay guys who get injured. You're just singing the same song with a different verse. Different pitcher same siory as before .

Official NHL COVID season thread
Tied with 4 other teams now with 51 points but listed as 7th now in the WC, and only 3 points away from the 2nd seed in Western Conference but 4 of the teams ahead have anywhere from 1-3 games less played. Shows what 5 wins in a row in a bad conference can do. Helluva 3rd period last night. Nice road wins. Back home now / Let's see if that 1st game back at home is a let up game. A win against the Canucks would be huge.

Worked out nicely 30th goal for his 900th point in his hometown. I think he's got something like 36 points in his last 16 games. Volcanic.

Not totally unexpected with his ice time dwindling and the return of Murphy and now Forsling. Maybe was getting a little sloppy in his own end. Still so young . Just sent him down to get him more ice time.

Well you are talking 5th starter when the original point was anyone cheaper than Nova with Nova's qualifications when poster said they would have signed someone RATHER THAN Nova because Nova was an overpay.

Would be another E and also the R someone guessed already and hangman usually will split the 2 words so you know ahead of time you're dealing with a 2 word answer instead of one word.

White sox active in starting pitching market
Might not be anyone left when Machado signs. Buchholz wasn't a bottom feeder . He had a 3.0 bWAR in only 98 IP last year but his season started May 20 and ended Sept 13 because of injury but he was damn good when he was pitching. Season ended after he had a right elbow flexor strain. He also missed almost all of 2017 with the Phillies due to a partial tear in his right flexor tendon so he is made of glass .

Colon 146 IP almost 6 ERA 2018 will be entering his age 46 season . Ervin Santana 24 innings pitched last year. Gallardo 84 IP. Jackson hasn't pitched above 140 innings since 2013. Gio Gonzalez still a possibility though probably looking for a multi year contract might take one if he doesn't get satisfactory offers but a good innings eater type. Jason Hammel will be 36 in 2019 . 6.00 ERA in 2018 with 127 IP. Definitely not a better option than Nova. Anibal Sanchez signed through 2020 so unavailable unless traded for and then his contract is for through 2020 . 2019 will be age 35 season. Last time he pitched above 150 innings was 2016. Edinson Volquez did not pitch in 2018. So none of the guys you mentioned count as durable any more except Gio and we still don't know if he would take a 1 year contract. He might also still be on the Sox radar but it is getting rather late in the game. Nova still filled that specific need for a decent, youngish, 4th starter, innings eater,1 year only pitcher with low walk totals.

You have a chance to be right on your assessment of Colome/Narvaez. One thing you and Chicago White Sox left out is he is another one who played with Machado on the DR 2015 WBC team. Maybe it's overkill with Alonso and Jay being bother in law and good friend and Nova and Colome being ex WBC team mates but it does factor in slightly to the make MM as comfortable as possible situation.

That's the point he was making. When I asked the question that Balta answered I already knew one option was Shields . So the Sox had to replace Shields with a younger, better version of Shields who was only going to be around 1 year. I expected that answer but I am really waiting for the answers to my question from the guys who think Nova was an over pay and would've rather had Miley or Bucholz for cheaper but were not reliable innings eaters.

2018-9 MLB off season free agency thread
Thank you .My point exactly. A bunch of posters claiming Nova was an overpay and hence the off season was bad. I am hearing crickets for a cheaper, just as reliable ,1 year starting pitcher as Nova. Nova's salary is just about the same as Shields last year.

I think when you analyze which pitcher you are going to pay you need to look a little closer. Nova, in the last 3 years pitched over 160 innings each of those years. He was exactly what the Sox were looking for . Bucholz is not that , Miley is not that. I would have loved Miley but he only pitched 80 innings last year. Good option for 5th starter . Bucholz pitched 98 innings last year 7 innings in 2017. Again good option for 5th starter but not a replacement for Nova. Last time Bucholz pitched over 160 innings was 2014. Find me a guy like Nova who pitched 160 innings or more the last 3 years who costs less than Nova and only have him for 1 year, then we can begin the real discussion.

Harper to Phillies 13yr/330 mil
Exactly could be he was unlucky because he was hitting the ball into the shift. More fielders in the area someone hits the ball a lot is wise and doesn't equate to the batter being unlucky.

Harper to Phillies 13yr/330 mil
Machado isn't a guarantee? He's more of a guarantee to produce consistent high level of play than Harper just by being on the field more often. If we can't trust that our overflow of OF prospects are going to produce at least 2 quality bats and above average OF defense then rebuilding is ridiculous . The Sox are in a position where they have to believe high quality prospects will produce high quality results.

Harper to Phillies 13yr/330 mil
Perhaps . We will see. That just means the Sox will be getting a better deal than those teams. I will happily take a guy playing 162 games over the guy who plays 120. So not only do the Sox get the better deal they are getting more value per games played.
