QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 01:28 PM) Greinke's pretty incredible, isn't he? Yeah, when he's on, he just cuts everyone to shreds. If only his other 11 personalities pitched so well. (Kidding... Zach, even though you pitch for a rival, we love you, we love your sound.)

I don't think they'll win, though they could well finish out of the basement. I would like to see Greinke keep rolling. I enjoy watching him pitch, and besides, I'm a sucker for a good comeback story.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 10:36 AM) People are seeming to forget that although it was shocking to see Jim react like that, he did go pretty crazy. Anyways, he needs the day off regardless and Ozzie said he was getting one so this works out fine. I don't know about that. He was just yelling, he didn't go Milton Bradley on anyone. It just looks worse because he's normally so subdued.

QUOTE (mreye @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 10:24 AM) I'm sorry. I was out of town this weekend. What did he do? He was arguing the strike zone.
-
Do they usually suspend players who get tossed, or who get tossed for arguing balls and strikes? If it's something they always do, well, okay, but I'd think getting tossed would be enough. Doesn't matter much, though. He was due for a day off, so it's just a loss of a pinch-hitter.

QUOTE (Balance @ Apr 14, 2008 -> 10:14 AM) (EDIT: This was in response to Max Power. I somehow managed to mess up the quote.) Sorry about the delay in responding.... Let's see if I can remember the basic crust recipe. You need 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of warm (110 degree) water, 1 packet of yeast, a teaspoon of sugar, a heavy pinch of salt, and a splash of extra virgin olive oil. Put the warm water in a large mixing bowl. Add in the sugar and yeast. Let the yeast bloom for about 5 minutes (you'll see frothing when it's ready). In a separate bowl, mix the flour and salt. When the yeast has bloomed in the first bowl, add a small splash of olive oil to the water/yeast mixture. Then, gradually pour the flour into the yeast-water. You can mix this by hand (which is fun, but messy) or with the dough-hook of your mixer (which is less messy and somewhat less fun). It takes some work to get the flour combined into the water, as it's pretty sticky. If you're mixing by hand, you basically use the dry flour in the bowl to take the wet, sticky dough off your hands and work it into a ball of dough. (This is why the mixer is easier.) When all the dry flour is worked into the dough ball, knead the dough for about 10 minutes. When you're done, pour about a tablespoon of olive oil into a clean medium bowl. Put the dough ball in there and coat it with the oil. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it sit at room temperature for about 90 minutes. It will double in size as the yeast raises the dough. 90 minutes later, preheat your oven to 475 and take the dough ball out and put it on a lightly floured surface. Roll it out into a circle. Put it on a pizza pan or pizza stone. Put your sauce, cheese, and toppings on the crust. (I recommend Pastorelli pizza sauce from a can if you don't want to make sauce.) Bake that sucker for 8-10 minutes. Let it cool a few minutes before cutting and eating! Hope that helps! You can look at foodnetwork.com for other recipes; I just know this one works well. Lemme add -- you can also get pizza dough pre-made from Trader Joe's ($1 for a bag of dough enough for one pizza). Then all you have to do is roll it out and add the sauce, toppings, cheese. I'm SURE yours turns out better. I'm just saying, for those of us without patience, and those of us who can't ever get anything with yeast to do anything right, it's an option.

Yankees Dig Up Concrete At New Yankee Stadium

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 13, 2008 -> 11:05 PM) This is a HUGE story in NYC. The post actually ran a front page full cover story about it on Friday, and when the story broke it was also front page, although it was just a sidebar. I don't think you can underestimate how much people love baseball on the east coast. Coming from the midwest it's been a great shock. Baseball is king here and even the Giants' championship keeps football a very distant 2nd. Today I was playing ultimate frisbee in prospect park and like 3-4 of the guys on my team got into a very in depth conversatino about the mets and phillies this year. It's so great to see baseball so loved. s***, you can't swing a dead cat in NYC without hitting someone in a Mets or Yankees cap. I don't know if that's generally true about the East. The Eagles are king in Philly (although the Phils are big, too -- everyone knows how Philadelphia fans are), the Ravens and Redskins in Baltimore and Washington (though of course the Nats are pretty new). And I think many Jets fans would disagree. It just depends on the area. -
QUOTE (Linnwood @ Apr 13, 2008 -> 04:13 PM) That's not the part that bothers me.

QUOTE (Linnwood @ Apr 13, 2008 -> 03:49 PM) How about worst start in baseball history? 1988 Baltimore Orioles started the season 0-21. Blech. Not a good memory.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 12, 2008 -> 06:41 PM) No, they'd have had to wait a couple more months to delay arbitration by a year, unless he's sent back down at which point I think it gets complicated. QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Apr 12, 2008 -> 06:44 PM) Yeah, to just gain control another year, they'd have to call him up at some point in May, and to delay arbitration, it'd have to be at least late May, more likely June. Or something like that... I'm surprised they didn't just shift Hinske over there for the next month, but good for Longoria. So, apparently they have delayed his fa by a year. So sez the St Pete Times, here.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 12, 2008 -> 05:40 PM) Evan Longoria is on his way to Tampa. Called up after Aybar hit the DL. So, by doing this, the Rays don't gain anything in terms of delaying arbitration or fa, right?

Ricky Reilly, Billy Simmons

Everytime I read some writer's anti-blog rant, it baffles me. Do you really think I'll read you more because you say I should read you more? f***. You. Write something interesting instead of bawling like a girl for 1000-odd words. The two or three times in the last month I visited ESPN or SI online and actually made an effort to, you know, read things, I left hating myself that I'd wasted 10 minutes, 15, whatever, and learned absolutely nothing, and worse, enjoyed none of it. Now, I'll waste plenty of time every day here, checking rotoworld every half-hour or whatever, but there's nothing that compares in pure vacuousness to the recycled cliches and yesterday's news of the big sports networks. You take something that's totally empty and make it pretentious. Oh, sure, now I'm interested in what you have to say... -

Nice! Getting that with two outs, and a great hitter up there to do it. Personally I'm liking Quentin leading off. -

From rotoworld: Ahem, I mean, how sad, terrible example, grumble grumble... Also, Milwaukee has too many Villanuevas. Or Villanuevi. Whatever.

Tombstone. I guess I'm the only who never liked HRI frozen. Just seemed to turn out too greasy. And I love the pizzeria itself. Used to always stop there on the way to Comiskey. Love those dim memories.

Most career interceptions. God, whoever holds that record must really blow.

The OFFICIAL "I was wrong about Joe Crede" thread

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 08:15 PM) I could only find when he had the surgery, but I do remember the articles when the White Sox wanted him to have it saying that it was exactly the same as the Alomar procedure. The same discs from what I can remember. But that doesn't mean he won't have any trouble getting out of bed tomorrow morning. The only way I see the Sox signing Crede to a huge contract is if he has a huge year, the team has a huge year, and Fields is awful in AAA, or traded for someone during the season. I think the odds are pretty good Fields is at 3rd in 2009. I think the organization is as high on him as a lot of people on this board. This is all I can find about the comparison: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...sp&c_id=mlb That doesn't mean that it was exactly the same. "The same surgery" could just mean that they both got a discectomy. -
The OFFICIAL "I was wrong about Joe Crede" thread
jackie hayes replied to shawnhillegas's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 03:15 PM) Nothing is guaranteed, especially with backs. I just looked into it a little further though, and Alomar Jr. had his back surgery in 1993, which means he played post surgery for 14 years, including 3 or 4 stints with the White Sox, and his back was never an issue, although he had so many other injuries that maybe it helped his back from not blowing up. So, on this -- is there anything that says the Alomar had the procedure on two discs? Because in the (admittedly limited) study I mentioned, the odds seem to be much worse for the two-level procedure. I'm mostly thinking about that one study, the discussion with ptatc, and Crede's reluctance to undergo the surgery in 2006. (I know the Sox and Crede keep describing this as a 'very minor procedure, in-and-out, no biggie' -- but if that were the case there was no reason to put it off a year.) Looking at all that, 3 or 4 years down the road doesn't look very good to me, and definitely not good enough to gamble $10+ mil on it. (Personally, I don't know if I'd be comfortable with that even if Crede were completely healthy.) This debate has been rehashed so many times here, I'm just going to leave it at that. Jmo.
