QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 17, 2013 -> 02:07 PM) I agree he's not as bad as the others, because at least he had some insight on this, but the way he's trying to come off as a savior via his interviews is making me sick. He also jumps to conclusions as to how business works in the US, simply because he worked for the NSA. The way he's talking, and it bothers me greatly, he's basically saying, "Apple or Google should have denied participation DESPITE the US government having court orders backed by the Patriot Act." The stupidity of that statement goes above and beyond naive. If people could ignore valid court orders or summons or warrants that easily, they'd probably do it all the time. Unfortunatly, doing so results in very bad things, no matter how big of a company you are. This may be true now, but I'm not sure for how much longer. EDIT: Only in respect to corporations on Google's order of magnitude, I meant.

It was pretty obvious something along these lines was happening, but I do think there's a difference between "Of course the government must be doing this, why wouldn't they?" and "Hey look, the government actually IS doing this." How big of a difference that is depends on the person. For me, the difference isn't that large. I thought John Oliver had the best line on this last week. "Mr. President, we're not saying you did anything illegal. We're just saying, it's a little bit weird you didn't have to."

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 13, 2013 -> 05:45 PM) Yeah, probably...I was referring to the time I read it (when I was in law school) rather than the time of the case, I guess... Oops, you did say that. I read it in Health Law, though, not an IP class.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 13, 2013 -> 04:22 PM) I seem to remember these companies running tests on people who showed certain unexplained immunity or defenses to particular ailments or conditions and then patenting their extraordinary genes without really getting their permission or even giving them any notice...this was like 7-8 years ago though when I read it... Is this what you were thinking of? Maybe not, this case was from 1990.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 08:39 PM) I think it's that the information is not material or significant enough to provide an advantage. But he says "you assume people make the right trade with the number" in regards to which way the market goes. To me that implies the information is significant enough to prompt a trade, but (like any other trade) not necessarily a profitable one. It's up to the trader to use the inside information to his advantage. Regardless of whether the trade is profitable, as a general rule of thumb I don't think we want some market participants prioritized in getting key information that's released from a single source like this.

Yeah, I thought he said "f***in" in there. Funny. What a game. What a win. -
QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 07:46 PM) What advantage does this give someone? You assume these people will make the right trade with the number. But markets are not rational, especially now with the Fed intervening. There is no guarantee that the market will move one way or the other if the corresponding number is +/-. There is / was nothing illegal here. Oil inventories came out last week and were worse than expected and the market was up. So if you had the number and you put on a bearish position and the number was bearish and the market went against you by going up, having the number did not benefit you. Wait, is this argument really "Insider trading is ok because people might do poorly at insider trading?"

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 06:47 PM) I've always had the issue of swinging and missing when I golf, this has been the first summer I've made it a point to hit the driving range and starting to work on my swing so I can at least be respectable when playing a course. I saw it mentioned a few posts back but I stand around 6'4 and I feel like taller clubs would help a lot but is it something I should do now or after taking some golf lessons and getting a more fluid swing first? I'm by no means an expert so do some poking around online, but it does make a difference. Otherwise you're either not striking the ball at the optimal point, or you're screwing up your swing by compensating to strike it well with a shorter club. But the same caveat mentioned above applies here too -- if you play twice a year, it's not really worth it to buy a whole new set of clubs. But if you want to get a new set regardless, definitely look into to having them fitted. EDIT: As to whether you should take lessons first or get new clubs first, my hunch would be the lessons. Then the pro can probably give you some advice on what to look for in clubs, too.

First 8 or so minutes was good, next 2-4 were ok, final 8-10 minutes were meh. Boston definitely in control for the latter portion. Quit trying to make fancy moves/passes and get it on net. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 12, 2013 -> 02:25 PM) Ha, I still have a bubble 2 sitting in my office that I can smash. I upgraded from an old set of callaways to a used set of ping irons about 2 years ago and it made a world of difference for me. However I dont buy into the equipment making the golfer better. Yeah I'm talking to all of you weekend warriors that went out and bought that white driver. I've seen one guy be able to hit that thing out of about 50. Since you already hit the ball well I would bet new clubs will just alter your ball flight a bit so getting fit is probably a good idea. Do you hit blades? That driver upgrade may help you with distance and roll due to new technology but they all weigh differently nowadays so it takes alot of adjustment. Seconded. Definitely recommended, especially if you're not between 5'10"-6', I'd say.

That picture from Bolland's wedding is ridiculous. -
So will he just be pushed back to Friday in Houston?

I like standard steel shafts on my irons, and graphite shafts on my woods. But that's just me. I'm also a terrible golfer.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 10, 2013 -> 11:37 AM) I'm still disgusted in the display Fullerton put on. f***ing pathetic. They were completely a more talented team and flat out choked. If it weren't for the generous scorekeeping, every single run allowed to UCLA would have been unearned. One of the premier defensive teams in the country completely fails against a team (UCLA) that will make you pay for any mistakes. The absolute only way they could have beaten Fullerton is if Fullerton beat themselves...and they destroyed themselves. Freaking pathetic. This was the best team since the 06 team which choked to ASU in the super regionals. Such a sick pitching staff wasted. Tip my cap to UCLA though. Played great fundemental baseball. Flawless by and large and they made the big pitches when they needed to (Fullerton couldn't do anything with runners on and a lot of that had to do with good pitch execution). Fun Fact: Chatted with Rowand for a few minutes at the Fullerton game. Also chatted with Troy Glaus at the game. My god Glaus is huge. Was crazy how no one knew or recognized either of these guys. Edit: Sorry, I needed to vent. Is Rowand as cool as I imagine him to be in person?

8/10 of Hawkins's hits were for extra bases, including four home runs. Nice.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2013 -> 04:09 PM) They are doing a modernization plan in Whiting, and then I had someone tell me that there was a fire at another refinery somewhere in the midwest. Don't know if that part is true or not. Well the reason I'd heard for the Minnesota price spike was that three facilities were down at the same time for scheduled maintenance. Sen. Klobuchar (D-MN) got all pissed and wrote angry letters galore.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 09:03 PM) Based on that assessment I don't ever plan on seeing Trouble With the Curve. Don't. Watched it last weekend. The non-baseball scenes try to be serious, and then all the baseball scenes are about as realistic as the hockey scenes were in Mighty Ducks.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 10, 2013 -> 01:50 PM) On a related issue, why is gas around Chicago $1 more than gas in S.C. and .50-60 more than gas all the way down in Key West? I was in Chicago for a few days a little less than a month ago. While I was in Chicago, the gas prices here in the Cities skyrocketed to be the highest in the country (at the time) at about $4.30. They're back down to $3.60.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 30, 2013 -> 01:38 PM) So MidAmerican Energy Holding Co (a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway) has reached an agreement to acquire NV Energy, the public utility company I work for in Nevada. MidAmerican already owns Pacificorp, which owns a large portion of the assets in the West. Combine that with NV Energy's assets in NV, and MidAmerican holds a disproportionately large number of assets in the western power grid. I'll be interested to see how FERC approval goes... That will be an interesting one to watch. Pacificorp and NV Energy aren't part of the same ISO, are they? I'm more familiar with the Midwest stuff....

I can't believe Dawson thought he could keep going. He couldn't even stand.

QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Jun 9, 2013 -> 06:13 PM) Indiana is setting itself up to become a midwest power with Coach Smith. I'm just scared he'll head somewhere else, but at least he is an Indiana native. And I'll be interested to see if Ty Neal leaving affects the decision process for Halstead and Slegers. But who cares about all that right now, OMAHA!! This is unreal.

Hoosiers!! Outlast Florida St in a wild one. I was going nuts in the bottom of the 9th. One more win and it's on to Omaha.
