QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 07:36 PM) Read Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods, his story about hiking (part of) the Appalachian Trail. Really tempted to burn some FF miles, jump on a plane and head out east to do some hiking. I'm told if you're into hiking out East, this is a must read. As Far as the Eye Can See by David Brill

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 10:03 PM) Game 3 they had more scoring chances, they just couldn't finish. Today was pretty damn even, didn't have the edge in play like game 3. Still can't believe the Chara save. When Malkin made the stickhandle and waited, I thought no doubt it was in the back of the net. Haha, yeah. At least there wouldn't be noise complaints. If you didn't know a game was on you would think I was being assaulted or something. Same. I kept waiting to see it in the net. What a play by Chara. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 07:31 PM) trick question, NSA has direct access to the google servers Is this actually a proven (or at least leaked) thing, or just an assumption? Granted, it's the same assumption I would make.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:06 PM) I think Horrific is a gross exaggeration. He was serviceable while Bolland was out and has been a contributor in the playoffs. Eh, debatable. I didn't like the trade to begin with and he was brutal in the regular season, but I must give Handzus his due for this postseason. He had a brutal game early in the series against the Wild, but he's been very good ever since. -
Hide it in some piece of the house you're renovating so she finds it. Just don't lose it first.

The first two supers were postponed today. Bleh.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 07:38 AM) I was pretty excited when Sale came up. That at bat against Mauer Hawk still refers to ought to go down in history. Joe Mauer walked away from the plate awestruck. I do not remember this. Any video?

QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 07:59 PM) Slegers will probably go in the first five rounds, so I'm thinking he's gone. DeNato will probably come back, and Coursen-Carr had a very impressive freshman campaign. It's really weird thinking IU will actually be good at baseball again next year. Yup. Stoked for this weekend. I know we're underdogs, but it wouldn't be a huge shocker to pull it off. Coursen-Carr has looked damn good. I'd be really surprised if DeNato and DeMuth don't come back, and mildly surprised if Slegers does. I thought Slegers was in the 5-8 round range.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 5, 2013 -> 01:56 PM) Not really. If a general warrantless search is such a grave offense then it shouldnt matter. In both scenario A and B, they have no evidence to connect me to any other crime, they are putting on complete fishing expeditions. So its okay to fish, but only after the person has been convicted of a crime. Guess Im not really seeing a huge victory for the 4th amendment. If he is such a protector of the 4th amendment, perhaps he should argue that a fishing expedition like that is never allowable. But in many areas of the law we treat those who have been convicted of a felony different than those who have not been convicted felony. It's a very important distinction. People who have been convicted of a crime (should) have a different expectation of privacy than those who have been merely arrested. Orin Kerr said on Volokh after this came down that this opinion isn't terribly interesting to academics, but it does have a lot of practical effects.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 5, 2013 -> 01:50 PM) That's a pretty important distinction though, no? I would say so.
-
I'm with Scalia on this one. Cold day down south for sure. Taking DNA just to tie them to either unsolved or yet-to-be-committed crimes sounds like a general warrant, which is pretty much the exact thing the 4th Amendment is supposed to protect against.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 30, 2013 -> 09:41 AM) If you lived in minnesota you would probably smell bad and subsist on a diet of Lutefisk Hey, I sure as hell don't eat Lutefisk. -
QUOTE (Tex @ May 29, 2013 -> 11:43 AM) Remember this is a district that has experienced a much higher than normal suicide rate. Determining which students may have a propensity towards harming themselves is a worthy goal. Unfortunately, the tip offs are self destructive behaviors that not many would want to admit. Thinking about it a bit, if someone is looking for help, they might just admit it on a school required form. The school administration probably also know that many students will not incriminate themselves, but some may. Therefor, a teacher discouraging, or making it cool to resist, doesn't help that part of the process. This reminds me a bit about a seminar I went to on bombs in buildings. The ATF agent recommended if we received a bomb threat to ask where was the bombm what did it look like, when will it explode, etc. When we laughed he pointed out that the caller called to warn us and it is possible they truly do want to prevent a tragedy. Counterintuitive I know, but it has played out that way. I just don't see how the possibility that one or two students might for some reason admit it on a form with their name on it (which I still find difficult to believe) is worth driving the rest of the activity further underground because those students don't want to incriminate themselves. But the dumbest part about all this was the lack of warning they gave teachers. Apparently they sent something home to students, but the teachers were not alerted? Responding to concerns about self-incrimination seems like an obvious thing to think about when implementing this survey.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 28, 2013 -> 02:26 PM) Iowa City is already prepping. Iowa River is rising pretty quick I was there this past weekend and it looked pretty high.

I can't believe the school actually thought this was a good idea in the first place.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 29, 2013 -> 09:19 AM) Thanks...so the woman we bought it from was reasonably famous back in the '50's and '60's...she dated Sam Giancana for the better part of 15 years or so...apparently there have been all kinds of famous friends of hers and mob buddies of his that used to stay there...I'm determined to try and become friendly with her (she lives in a huge mansion next door) and try and get some good stories out of her... That's pretty awesome.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 27, 2013 -> 09:12 AM) I thought we'd win game 5, and I believe we win game 7* It's just getting there. Here goes nothing. Come on boys. Get it done. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 27, 2013 -> 04:18 PM) I wonder if you contacted Marvel if they've whipped up anything specifically to allow for the use of their material in lesson plans (or if they might not do so if you asked). If I were Marvel, does seem like an obvious way to go after young readers.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 24, 2013 -> 02:44 PM) And to farmteam's point, the question is not what assumptions am I making in order to convict, the question is what assumptions am I making to NOT convict. And in the absence of much other evidence, these assumptions or judgments make it more likely that I vote NOT to convict a guy, because these assumptions or judgments, coupled with the lack of evidence make it even more difficult to convict. Ah. Well, I guess my point then (which I think is what you're saying here; correct me if I'm wrong) is that if the prosecution presents the case in a way that assumptions are required for me to reach either conclusion (conviction or non-conviction), then I will make those assumptions for a non-conviction, but not for a conviction. As a juror, I would feel that that would be the best way for me to live up to "innocent until proven guilty" and all that jazz. Admittedly, I've never actually served on a real jury.
-
Too bad, but it doesn't worry me at this point.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 24, 2013 -> 01:34 PM) I agree...none of those things mean he should be allowed to be murdered walking down the street. But if I am on the jury, and you're asking me to decide whether I think Zimmerman acted in self-defense or killed this kid intentionally, and not many of the facts are known, I'd be making a lot of assumptions based on what I could piece together about the character of the two participants. Let's face it, everyone makes these sort of judgments every day. You're not going to suddenly stop when called upon to actually determine whether someone is guilty of murder or not. Personally, if I have to make that many assumptions, there's no way I could vote to convict. I may even think that my assumptions are right and that he should be convicted...but if the prosecution hasn't presented the case in a way that doesn't me to require to make that many assumptions, then I could not convict. I do think there's a difference between making one or two assumptions in reaching a decision, and making 6 assumptions to reach the same decision. I'm not sure where I'd draw the line with that, though.
