QUOTE (Noberto Martin @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 01:28 AM) I don't see the Sox passing on Beckham, I also want them to get a lot of highschoolers after the first round just to get the system younger. To me...high schoolers are somewhat wasted picks unless it's pretty apparent they'll forgo their college scholarships. As for Beckham....the thing that I don't get is why would the Sox take him instead of guys like either Smoak, Wallace or Alonso when they invested so heavily in young SS Juan Silverio.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 11:02 PM) I can't wait until they lose in the NL playoffs again and all the dread in this thread is for nothing, just like last year. That's why I just keep my mouth shut and just nod and smile when talking to exuberant Cub fans. I really hate bringing up the point that they've played 17 out of the last 23 against bottom feeders Pittsburg, Colorado and San Diego. God they have a cake schedule.......

I just want to add something in terms of Walker and the entire orginization's approach to offense. A while back when the Sox were playing the Twins DJ shared a very telling remark (I think that's the first time I've ever heard DJ say something relevant other than being a little parrot to Hawk)...but he was talking about his short stint playing with the Twins. He mentioned something along the lines of he had a HR and a triple in the game...and late in the game when it was out of reach...he was batting and hit the ball to the right side (either a 1B or groundout that either advanced the runner or scored him)...and after the game when Kelly approached him he didn't say nice job in regards to his HR or triple....the only comment to DJ was his taking the ball the other way and advancing the runner. He said that is the approach they teach in the Twins orginization from the top on down. The pound it into your head from Day 1. Not sure if anybody recalls when he was mentioning that or not...just thought it was very telling...even though I doubt I EVER hear DJ say anything relevant for the next 2 years.

My problem with the whole thing is Kenny took the puss way out. He should have just kept his mouth shut and talked to Ozzie in private. Instead he shoots and email out.....WEAK! Nothing wrong with what Ozzie said...it's the truth. I seriously doubt any trades occur...but I would sit some of these underperforming puds.

Wanne replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2008 Season in Review
So typical of this team....9-1-2 get on...3-4-5 piss it away. -
Tough road for the Vandy vs Oklahoma winner today. 1pm game with highs around 103-105....winner comes back to play at 6pm against ASU.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 31, 2008 -> 07:03 PM) Who should be the hitting coach? Carlton Fisk.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 31, 2008 -> 07:26 PM) Yet you offer no names for a replacement. The problem is not the coach. Its the mix of hitters. It took KW a couple of years before he figured he had to do something serious with the bullpen. He has been just as slow to react with the stagnant offense. That's why they pay Kenny the big bucks...it's his job...not a bunch of internet hacks. All I was doin' was sayin that sometimes people need a jolt in the ass...and if that means the beloved Greg Walker gets the boot...so beit. This offense has sucked ass for 2 and a half years...time for a wakeup call. You make it seem that Greg Walker is irreplaceable....

The DBacks fired hitting coach Kevin Seitzer...and went on to win their division. Just sayin.......

Geez-us christ...just got home and glad to see the offensive juggernaut is once again at it. Glad I didn't rearrange my plans to stay home and watch this garbage.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 31, 2008 -> 11:50 AM) The one thing with Wallace is that he's going to have to really work every off-season to make sure he keeps the speed he has (because he does have good speed for a corner infielder, despite his large torso). He dropped a significant amount of weight this past year and hopefully when he gets drafted he will stay serious (I see no reason he wouldn't as I've never read anything which has questioned his work-ethic) and continue to stay in shape and keep those pounds off (because as long as he's able to do that, he should be able to rake and he should move up the latter very quickly). 2 weeks ago, I would have had nothing to do with Wallace. Now, if the Sox are going to take a bat and Skipworth/Smoak are gone (I'm already assuming Alvarez and Crow/Matsusz (The two pitchers I'd have no problem taking are gone) than I'd have no problem going the Wallace or Beckham approach (Wallace is the much safer pick, Beckham could fill a tougher position but offensively I would be stunned if Beckham ever hit like Wallace did at a major league level (that isn't a knock on Beckham either). btw...Wallace went a pedestrian 4 for 5 in ASU's opening round game with a MONSTER dinger yesterday. The dude can flat out rake. I know this sounds strange...and I don't make the comparison...but the name everybody throws out here when talking about Wallace's place in ASU history is Bob Horner. I wouldn't be disappointed with this pick at all if it's not Smoak. As for that list above...I really rather not see Wallace go to Minnesota to be the Kent Hrbek reincarnation. Also...I REALLY doubt that Tampa takes Alvarez when they already have Longoria. Just seems like the same player to me.

Anytime these guys wanna blow the dust off their bats...fine by me. Geez. It's so painfully obvious that Swisher has ZERO confidence standing at the plate...he just looks lost and trying NOT to fail. I feel bad for him...but he just needs a few days off as most on here have said.
-
I hope I don't read any more stories about Ozzie saying Alexei's not really what he wants at 2nd. He's been lights out with the glove.

QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ May 30, 2008 -> 08:09 PM) Yeah I know he is capable, but he is in a funk...and he got a hold of one last night. Fact is lead off guy gets on in a game where nobody is hitting and you can't score runs...I say bring in a faster Anderson, and move swish to first... Plus you need the better defense in that place Oh I'd move Swish alright....to the friggin' pine for a while. Konerko at least has shown signs of getting out of his funk where Swisher is going backwards.
-
Honestly...he is absolutely WORTHLESS right now and you can tell just lookin' at his face when he's at the plate. He looks like he's lost all confidence. SIT HIS ASS OZZIE!!!!!!!!

Money says K or DP.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 30, 2008 -> 05:45 PM) Swisher could be batting .100, Which he might be in a few weeks...

At what point is Ozzie gonna sit him for a bit and give BA some ABs? He is such a buzzkill everytime he comes up.
-
Not holdin' my breath here for Swish....

QUOTE (Fantl916 @ May 29, 2008 -> 03:45 PM) I am willing to bet any amount of money that Justin Smoak is taken by the Giants with the 5th pick, so long as Alvarez doesn't slide down to them... The Giants wants bats in their system, and most likely a college bat that can impact them sooner than later considering how horrific their current offense is. I bet they take Smoak if Alvarez is off the board and pencil him in as their 1b of the future (considering he'd arrive in SF long before Angel Villalona anyways) Posey, Alvarez, Matusz, Crow, Smoak, T. Beckham, and Skipworth are probably all gone by the time we pick.... IMO it's gonna come down to Hosmer, Wallace, or G. Beckham... If Smoak was there i'd be pumped... but I'm seriously doubting that's going to happen. Teams will view Smoak as the cheaper and more advanced alternative to the Hosmer (high school, Boras client)... No Alfonso Yonder love?!? He really seems to be the forgotten guy who's a pretty solid hitter.
-
I'm still in awe of Paulie's dinger. DAMN he hit that! One other thing....you've got 2 first place teams playing...and Tampa, who's never been there...it should be livin' it up. 12,636 attendence?!?!?!? That's friggin' embarrassing. You outta be ashamed Tampa.
