QUOTE (Yoda @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 02:40 PM) Before I give out my current max in benching and my ultimate goal for this year, where do you guys think I'm at? I'm 5'5 160lbs. Just want to see where I should be and what you guys have seen at the gym since it's hard to compare myself with others since they're usually taller than I am. Be honest. Usually benching your weight is the first big benchmark on your way to being a strong guy. Different limitations can sometimes make it hard to get past that while others have no problems beating that. Oftentimes shorter guys have an easier time progressing, especially on bench. The weight just doesn't have to move as far. My guess is that if you're ready to brag about your max, you're probably around BW and could be hoping for much higher.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 11:53 AM) why? i do them - what's the diff between using dumbbells and a barbell? just stability? Stability would be one use for doing a DB dead lift. Otherwise, I just dont see it as particularly safe vs the barbell equivalent as the movement is in itself very difficult and adding two independent weights (that are too low to the ground) that can move in several directions only makes it harder to master. The obvious alternative is to lessen the load, which is likely to make the movement turn into a sort of hack squat exercise instead of a posterior chain movement. It's something that could theoretically work but I don't see the utility in practice. In most cases I'm guessing there are two outcomes: 1. Significant risk of back injury 2. It turns into a legs-only exercise with little resistance A single leg DB squat would be superior for stability and in that case I'd recommend doing it with a straight leg instead. Can't load much weight on this movement either but you'll gain more in the stability aspect.

It would help if not all of our interesting prospects played the same position (OF)

I don't know if there are any good outcomes in a dumbell dead lift

Angels land Greinke
They gave up way too much, but it won't hurt them this year. Here's hoping ZG goes back to what he's done most of his career, which is be John Danks-like. I'd also prefer worse than that.

Sox want Grienke "badly"
Kenny will win exec of the year if he adds a legit starting pitcher without significant harm to the MLB roster. If he gets a reliever too, then just wow. Might as well nab Chase Utley while you're at it.
-
James Shields
Looking at his numbers, I can see why his value wouldn't be sky high. Which guy do you get? The CYA level guy from last year, the barely serviceable guy from th year before, or the Gavin Floyd-esque guy from the years previous? Depending on the way those numbers go, that contract could end up not being so great.

James Shields
This may merit some more discussion....

Sox want Grienke "badly"
Lol, TardTalk is our sister site I don't know if I'm giving up Tank for Shields. Tell them to take Floyd and like it ...blah maybe we should stand pat. The pitcher we acquire has to outperform DA/PH by a ton to make up for the lost run production in losing Tank

King Felix to the Sox??
So now Felix Hernandez is a $30M/year pitcher. Say what you want about the fairness of the contract, but very few teams can stand to simply add that much to their payroll for any reason.

Sox want Grienke "badly"
A good GM knows when to hang up the phone.
-
Sox want Grienke "badly"
I'd rather pay less for Garza or someone else that doesnt get picked up by the top teams due to the GM's initial high asking price.

King Felix to the Sox??
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 11:59 AM) And so would any of the other teams that could offer them significantly better prospects/young MLB talent than what the Sox could. Just like with the Greinke deal I commented on earlier, could you imagine what the reaction on here would be if KW traded the best pitcher in baseball for two guys that were minor league free agents, a 2nd baseman that's been a bust and a non-top 100 outfield prospect? Greinke is worth very little to them at this point. The goal is getting a return better than a draft pick. Many of our proposed deals are a ton better than the odds on a comp round pick. The other bidders are also wary of the value of 10 starts from any pitcher.

King Felix to the Sox??
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 11:56 AM) If the Sox wanted Felix Hernandez, it would probably have to be a deal involving Sale and Viciedo. Sale for Felix would be a huge loss for the Sox. You'd get far more in return for Sale than Felix with all that money owed.

King Felix to the Sox??
QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 11:54 AM) I would gladly include both Viciedo and Quintana, and anything the hell else they want. You just have to think about winning this year and how hard that may be if JorDanks plays left and only drives in 15-20 runs the remainder of the season.

King Felix to the Sox??
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 11:52 AM) For Felix? Not a chance in hell would Seattle do that. Remember we're saving them 45+ million dollars too.

King Felix to the Sox??
Can't give up both Quintana and Viciedo. Quintana, ADA, Beckham, Mitchell. Go.

Sox want Grienke "badly"
I'd trade anything for Felix Hernandez on the other hand....

Sox want Grienke "badly"
You trade Reed away assuming he's not one of VERY few closers that are good enough to keep that role for 6 years. Sans a WS win, you'd feel bad about him actually closing that long for them if he did. This mentally weak stuff wouldn't be said about Zack if he didnt have a clinical condition. Gavin Floyd isn't mentally weak either, he's literally unflappable out there. He's just inconsistent. Occasional bad pitching =/= mental weakness
-
Sox want Grienke "badly"
I would give up Reed, but that's about the max. I don't value closers or relievers that highly.
-
King Felix to the Sox??
I'd give up a lot for Felix. A lot. That would be such a KW move

QUOTE (kev211 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 08:53 PM) Why are so many people doubting the sox ability to win the central in this thread? With or without grienke I think we are better than the tigers. This might be a ban-worthy post.
