Southside Irish Parade
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Mar 27, 2009 -> 09:45 PM) Evergreen Park's mayor is throwing around the idea of hosting the Southside Irish Parade next year. It'd be interesting on a lot of levels, since their police department (~60) would obviously need outside help, and additionally, I guarantee the neighborhood wouldn't be nearly as passive about people pissing and throwing trashing all over. And from what I heard on the news, through the reporter, the mayor won't be taking any flack from people using the parade as a frat party. I, for one, support it. If Beverly isn't going to allow one, what's to stop someone else from taking over the reigns? There's also practically no bars on the stretch of road they plan on having the parade, so it limits the drunks exiting and entering near the parade route. It'll be an interesting discussion, if nothing else. They do a 4th of July parade every year and it turns out nice from all accounts. I don't think they understand that this is however a different beast. With that said, I hope if they do it, it turns out much better than it has here. From what I've heard the mayor state, he said they've been getting mixed reviews early on and stated it basically has to be unanimous for him to okay the parade or he just won't do it.

Uncle Bud Rips USA's WBC Effort
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Mar 27, 2009 -> 06:24 PM) It was something Bud created like 5 years ago, to me it's contrived and I value the MLB season much more over the WBC. Also, now he's not asking them to sacrifice just the regular ST, he's asking them to start training early so they're prepared for it. The way it's set up now players have been complaining they didn't get enough work in the off days so they are behind getting ready for the regular season, where they make millions of dollars. Gutherie (sp?) for the O's doesn't look like he'll be ready on the schedule the O's want him on. I didn't know Guthrie was mandated not to throw side sessions or anything like that. I also didn't know the 15IP which are less than what he would've gotten out of 3 weeks of ST, wouldn't allow for him to follow a training regime to get ready for the season. In fact, looking it up, Roy Oswalt who led the US in IP only pitched 11.2 innings and he didn't complain at all and I don't hear of him being so behind the other guys at Astros camp. I could maybe understand if it was a rookie who was going to be playing in the big leagues and he doesn't quite know everything he should be doing to get prepared, but for guys like Guthrie or Oliver Perez who state the WBC set them back, I think they're full of you know what. You don't need your manager on your ass 24/7 nor should you not know what you need to do to get ready for the upcoming season. All the stuff they supposedly need to do with the team could've been done on their own time. Especially considering since they played like twice a week.

Official 2008-2009 NBA Thread
QUOTE (rangercal @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 10:32 PM) Missed fts happen. He missed 1 Free throw. Miller made it seem like he missed 4-5 down the stretch. I think he's also referring to Rose missing FT's during last year's championship game. He actually was a pretty mediocre FT shooter for a guard prior to this year. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Mar 27, 2009 -> 08:23 AM) This may be so, but they havent done anything right since AI and Rasheed went down, and barring a miracle return by the both of them, I cannot see them fixing the problem. In fact, I wouldnt be surprised to see the Bobcats steal the 8th spot from the Pistons when all is said and done Good lord, Mike North is ready to give VDN an extension already. And he wonders why he isnt on the AM radio waves anymore I don't see the Bobcats hopping the Pistons, but it very well could happen with the way they're playing now. As far as Mike North, I don't like him, but giving VDN an extension might be bad. There's a discussion on the Bulls forum at RealGM, but basically, lemme post what sums up my feelings on it. And that was from someone who wants VDN fired. They do need to develop defensively, but offensively, I think you're only seeing the beginning for a reason I posted: Also keep in mind, VDN was hired rather late and had to deal with Joakim coming into camp out of shape, and Larry Hughes, our guard glut in general, and Deng sucking amongst all of our injuries.

Uncle Bud Rips USA's WBC Effort
Because World Pride should always take a backseat to National Pride. Riiiiiiiiiight... Bud actually has it right. The best players should be mandated to play unless in the event of an injury. It's not like these guys are playing 20 games, and it's not like the pitchers are throwing 50IP+. What he's stating is that the US has a hard time of representation because the best players are afraid of 20 plate appearances they normally would've been getting in ST or 6 innings of pitching which is undoubtedly less than what they would pitch in ST. I don't doubt for a second that the guys actually there were trying their hardest as Matt Thornton said. The problem that's there is that the players and owners value their franchises more than international competition.

Cleveland's 2009 starting rotation?
It could be a lot worse. Their offense and bullpen will make up a lot. Plus, it's not like you know if all their guys suck. It's just a question mark right now. Also, IP really shouldn't be part of the debate IMO. If you're good, you're good.

Southside Irish Parade
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 09:42 PM) What's funny here is, come next year, there will still be activity on Western Avenue. I'll guarantee it right now. Sure, not as many people, but who can stop everyone from just going to bars, visiting people in the neighborhood, or otherwise just hanging around the streets? And if the parade ever does come back, it'll be even more crowded since everyone will think to themselves "this may be the last year!11" What's tough is trying to figure out ways to resolve this problem. I doubt the city will pay more money for additional police officers. There will never be enough porter-potties, so that doesn't matter. You can't crack down on underraged drinking or public urination because of the vast amount of people who do it. This again goes back to the lack of officers and their unwillingness to enforce these laws. Neighborhood folks will have problems telling Joe Fratboy from Naperville not to piss on their lawn. He doesn't care, he's not from around the area. I know I'd just hate to be the people on the board who voted against this. There's still a lot of people in Beverly who love the parade and probably want those members kicked out of the country. Well some people on the board are business owners and some of them voted against it I could imagine. Regardless, there was a lot more cons than pros to this area. It's what I like about this area. If someone is f***ing with our neighborhood, we're going to do our best to get that person shut down. In this case the parade and the vast amount of people not from the area or even the southside of Chicago is our target. From all accounts, the committee is going to do something for St Patty's day, but on a much much smaller scale like a festival at the Beverly Arts Center is being discussed. The goal basically is to weed out those people from nowhere near Beverly over the course of a couple of years. Then maybe in 5-10 years, you might see a return of the parade. Also, it wouldn't surprise me if the city wouldn't approve a permit to gain more interest in the parade downtown. Think about it. They put a lot of money into it, but get nothing out of it. More people talked about the Southside Irish parade than the downtown parade which is a shock. As a resident, I'm glad they canceled the parade. I know a lot of neighbors who feel the same.

Southside Irish Parade
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 08:13 PM) I wonder if all of these relieved Beverly and Morgan Park residents understand what happens to the local businesses that rely on that parade. The area didn't want to stomach what had to be done, and that was to enforce the law. God forbid however if you happen to detain some precinct captains kid, or arrest the wrong politically connected figure. I'm not sure of many businesses that depend on the SSI. A lot of people end up just drinking on the route or going to garages or going to actual parties.

Know1ng...I haven't decided if it's the worst movie I have ever seen, or just really, really weird. Saw 5 sucked ass. No ands ifs or buts about it.

Southside Irish Parade
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 05:53 PM) Really, I didn't know this. What is involved with having a parade permit approved? I can't believe believe the assault of 11 police officers means anything. First off, assaulting someone is a loose term. This could be someone just pushing you. I would bet my membership with Soxtalk that the Bud Billiken parade has far more arrests for assaults on police officers, with far fewer people overall. Why don't they cancel that? I was willing to believe it was the people of the community making this decision, since they have everyones concerns in mind, but now that you suggest their permit was denied I'm a bit more interested in this process. I would really hope this isn't the Chicago government looking at the parade as an unnecessary cost and are looking for bulls*** reasons to cancel it. It really is a combination of both. There has been a growing number of residents over the past couple of years who have wanted to cancel this thing as people as far back as 10 years saw this was getting out of control. For me, it was like 5 years ago when I see buses at 7am full of people from Lincoln Park who are already wasted. From what someone posted at WSI, one of them involved a cop who broke up a fight with two girls where one girl spat on the cop. Another involved some drunkass punching a cop because they got his friend. With that said, the city was growing increasingly tired of complaints, and with this year being so crazy, they weren't going to approve a permit for next year. I've heard this from a couple of different places. The final hump that broke the camel's back was the committee voting against the parade for next year. The vote was something like 12-9.

Southside Irish Parade
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 04:47 PM) I don't think it's an issue of giving it a break. It's mainly a logistical issue of cramming 300K+ people into a parade route extending a little more than a mile, which has hardly the resources to contain it. People are mad at this decision for all the wrong reasons. A tradition? Really, getting drunk in the daytime and pissing in the neighborhood is a tradition? The parade is a front for acting obnoxious and everyone knows it. After all, it's one f***ing day out of the year. And there are a lot of Irish-themed events at bars all throughout the Chicagoland area around St. Patricks Day. Yep. It's pretty much unofficial at UofI, except up north. That's what it really has become. Doesn't matter if you're Irish or anything like that. Also, the main reason it was cancelled, a permit for next year's parade was not going to get approved for next year. That was explained to the committee. The only thing they were really voting on is if they would fight this. When 11 cops get assaulted, it's going to be hard to convince someone to allow a permit and for the residents to approve more of the same the following year.

I'm glad. As I posted over at WSI, this is the right thing to do. My experience this year:

I just discovered Azerus today. Way faster than Bitcomet or Flashget. Works like a charm. Now I just need to get invited to some private trackers.

QUOTE (rangercal @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 05:21 PM) Don't take the bait guys. He was kidding. Actually though, I still believe the Bears gave up on Terry Shea way too early considering with the small sample size of Grossman running it, they were pretty damn efficient.

Is Curt Schilling a hall of famer?
QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 05:42 PM) Curt Schilling is like the poster child for why wins for a pitcher shouldn't really be used as a metric, even over a whole career. Playing for those bad Phillies teams all those years hurt his win totals. Besides, any extrapolation from those numbers about him "not being a winner" or what have you should be trumped by his postseason success. There, he was nails. Bingo. No doubt he is HOF worthy.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 06:36 AM) I couldnt remember the quote correctly, but that had me crying. It was something along the lines of "Listen here you beautiful b****, im about to lay down some awful truth on you" And when he was leaving "For your information the watch was six thousand dollars......I hope you dont miss me when I am on TV" "Listen here, you beautiful b-----, I'm about to f--- you up with some truth!"

A lot of people have to understand is these movies are geared towards couples. Think about it. If you're going with your wife or girlfriend, this movie isn't a bad option at all. It's something that will keep you interested. Now if it's just a bunch of guys and such, then I Love You Man might be kind of weird and might not interest you. Funny People does look good and I agree, it does look like too much is given away in the trailer. The cop movie with Seth Rogen doesn't look all that great. Year One looked like sh*t, but I'm not much of a fan of Michael Cera in the first place. Forgetting Sarah Marshall was actually a decently funny movie to me. I'd watch again.

Official 2008-2009 NFL Offseason Thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 03:47 AM) I think it's kind of expected. Dude keeps himself in magnificent shape otherwise, so it's not a big deal. So long as he's in camp and ready to go, I'm not going to worry about anything else. Pretty much this. It's why he still has his skills and ability intact. He'd probably be worse off going to team workouts. Now when it comes to actually minicamps, then call me. As long as he learns the plays and such, the Bills should be fine. And yeah, what's up with Nate Davis not getting much love?

2009 Cubs thread
There was nothing wrong with Prior's mechanics IMHO. He had perfect form on it actually. Good setup, drove from the legs, generated most of his strength from there, then exploded to the plate in a motion which was completely under control. He repeated them perfectly too. The towel thing which he catches so much flak for is actually an excellent exercise for not only arm strength, but also for helping repeat your motions in non game situations. There was nothing run with Prior's mechanics. He did not have a vicious or wild motion. The problem was a string of bad luck which IMO began when he collided with Marcus Giles.

Jonathan Hood resigned from AM 1000
Yeah, I remember always listening to Hood at night during the summer after getting in. I wonder why everyone makes a big deal about guys leaving stations and such. From the sound of it, all of you guys hate every sportscaster on ESPN1000 or The Score. I haven't ever seen more than 3 people in this city agree on the same radio host being a good host.
