  1. QUOTE (pktmotion @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 06:39 PM) ...granted 62 AB's is not nearly an adequate sample size. but his .612 OPS last year isn't gonna cut it for a power position like RF and for a team trying to compete. Especially after their top FA signed with a team in their division. They're not paying Halladay/Oswalt $15 MM+/year to see the Braves win the NL East. It wouldn't surprise me if they looked for a power RF stopgap and kept Brown in AAA for a couple more years. Brown hit .346 in AAA last year. He's ready. Not to mention the Phils offense even with Timo Perez in RF is probably the best offense in the NL.
  2. The Phils still have Ibanez, Victorino, and Brown. No room for Quentin.
  3. It won't be worse than Soriano's. Werth can actually play defense, and has one of the best OF arms in all of baseball. Still bad. Surprised they didn't just offer a similar 6 year deal to Lee.
  4. MLBTradeRumors said that STL gave Berkman more money in order to get only 1 year ($8 mil). I assume that means that 2 years at ~6 mil was discussed. If you could get Lee for a similar 2 year deal, that would be a fantastic deal.
  5. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 06:57 PM) He's a whole 6 months(thanks 3e8) older than Pauly and he literally had one bad half of baseball while producing at a very solid clip in the 2nd half last season. If I were a betting man, Lee and PK will put up similar offensive production this upcoming season. I agree. Both Lee and Konerko had huge age-34 seasons after producing VERY similarly. One you're going to have to pay for the age-34 season, the other you will have to pay for their more realistic level of production.
  6. Isn't Bell under control for 2012 as well? That makes it a bit different than with Soriano.
  7. QUOTE (Wanne @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 03:32 PM) Yeah...gonna have to second that. Ghey1 I'm really dumbfounded people even talk about Beckham in the 3 hole. In a perfect world...sure...but he's not even close to being anywhere near that spot in the order. I'm just hoping for a bounce back year from him for cryin' out loud. If he hits like last year again, Becky may be more fitting.
  8. QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 03:19 PM) Nope only 52 and not a single one higher. Unless it's an inside the park homer. It's nice that Liriano is really the only good LH SP within the division that Dunn will face.
  9. QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 02:46 PM) Interesting info. My only point was the owners could at anytime they choose add payroll. It's no more complicated or simple than that. They are restricted only by their willingness to do so. We shouldn't have to be masters of finance in our discussions on how to improve the team. We only need owners on the same page. Ok, you discuss in make-believe-land. Others will stay in reality.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 02:15 PM) That's not how Viciedo's deal works. He's getting a couple million a year, but he still has the full set of pre-arb and arb-eligible years. Viciedo is under Sox control for 6 years. Yeah that's correct. I'm just mentioning how much more expensive Viciedo is going to be compared to Rizzo. Even in his 1st pre-arb season, Viciedo is required to make at least $2 million (that's if his team adheres to the 80% rule, it likely will be more than $2.5 mil). So basically, he's guaranteed at least 6 million in his first 3 MLB seasons (if he started in MLB in 2011). Rizzo will barely make more than $1 mil in his first 3 years. Admittedly, I could be misinterpreting arbitration rules when concerned with Major League deals given to prospects, but that's how I interpret it.
  11. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 02:11 PM) I'd have to think Hudson, Viciedo, and Flowers would have been a good deal compared to this, especially after Hudson took off in the NL West. Viciedo is on a major league deal though. He makes millions currently and is arbitration eligible soon. Rizzo is team controlled for years. That's a big difference.
  12. QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 01:50 PM) And you base that on what exactly? Further, I could give rat's ass how much they would be in the hole (if that were true, which I doubt). If they can't afford to run a major league team in this city, they have no business owning one. Do you think the fans in New York, Boston and LA care about that? Why should we? Hi, I'm earth. Have we met? You: I don't think so.
  13. QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 01:33 PM) We could have a 180 million dollar payroll if they so ordered. Yeah and the organization would be $50 million in the red.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 01:12 PM) Exactly, and Gonzalez makes relatively little in 2011 with Big Papi off the books in 2012. This probably ends Beltre's Boston career, but Werth has to still be in play there. Not just Papi, but Cameron and Drew off the books. That's another 20+ mil.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 12:44 PM) OTOH...the Padres could actually be believed to be in a stronger position than they were last year...because they actually competed last year, and they've also moved Peavy's contract and cut back their other commitments around him. They could have just run with him this year and probably gotten this good of an offer at the AS break. Instead, they made the move now, which is confusing. Maybe. The Red Sox were going to make some kind of move at 1B or 3B this off season, meaning they would not likely want Adrian at the deadline. Plus you have Fielder to contend with at the deadline as well. Maybe some team would have made a similar move at the deadline, but not the Red Sox.
  16. Lots of people love Kelly and Rizzo. Kelly will make most top 50 lists. Rizzo will make some as well. Still not what I thought SD would get, but Kelly and Rizzo are certainly a couple of the best prospects in baseball.
  17. Let's wait until we actually have a constructed bullpen. There could be a new Linebrink in 2011.
  18. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 08:49 PM) So, the White Sox don't exactly have a long history of monster free agent acquisitions... where does this one rank? This could be the best... Behind Belle.
  19. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 07:59 PM) The Sox didn't overpay for him. He is seriously worth $14 million a year to swing the bat 4-5 times per game - thats how good he is offensively. I would like to see any evidence you have of Vlad being a better hitter. On top of that, I would like to see any evidence you have of Thome being a better hitter. Remember that you have to consider durability when doing so. In my opinion, both Vlad and Thome are good hitters but they are not superior options to Dunn. They aren't even equal, and really it's not close. In fact, signing Vlad to the 2-3 year deal worth $6-7 million would have been overpaying for him by a ridiculous amount. Dunn is one of the best hitters in baseball though. Adam Dunn has the 4th most home runs in a players first 10 seasons - 354. Using some pretty simple arithmetic, that means he's averaged 35.4 homers per season in each of the first 10 years of his career. On top of that, he has the most walks in the majors over the past 7 seasons too, so he is getting on base at the same time. If Pujols were a DH, he'd STILL get $25 million a year. He's a once in a generation hitter who is going to be worth virtually any contract that you sign him to. Pretty easily, and if Konerko doesn't resign, then they can just sign Lee. --- Here's what I want from you - any evidence you have that Dunn sucks. You are pretty adament about this, so you must believe it, and therefore you must have evidence to back it up. I could make a similar post to yours wondering why the White Sox didn't trade for Ryan Theriot because he's a far superior player to Alexei Ramirez, but that wouldn't hold much ground because it's quite clear that it's wrong. So prove it. Why does Adam Dunn suck? What does JIM THOME bring to the table that Adam Dunn doesn't? Did you really need to dissect that post?
  20. Considering their pinched payroll, losing a couple of 1st rd picks would be a big loss for the Heat. I would love that.
  21. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 06:32 PM) PK was the second worst fielder on the Sox to Carlos Quentin. However bad his range is though, he is very consistent with balls he can actually get his glove on. No doubt. What he could get to, he got. Personally, I think because of Dunn's shear size, he'll be able to get to more balls/throws. Due to this, I don't think he's that much worse than Pauly defensively. Worse, but not by much.
  22. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 06:25 PM) Are we talking range or skills at 1st? You realize how many errors lexi did not get thanks to PK? How many times did a throw pull PK off the base that wouldn't pull Adam Dunn off the base?
  23. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 06:04 PM) Dunn had a surprisingly weird/good year last year at 1B. I don't think that will continue though. He just doesn't have the talent/make-up of a good defender. I think he's a -10 defender at 1B at this point. At least he's not gonna be a -30 in the OF on this team next year (I hope not at least). Tough to say as this was the first year he's played 1B full-time. He'd never played more than 67 games at 1B in a season before. I think people remember how awful he was in the OF and automatically assume he's just as horrific at 1B. Also, I'm sure throwing to a target that is 6'6" with the wingspan near a 7 footer is a major plus. It's very tough to pull Adam Dunn off the 1B.
  24. I think people are either overrated Pauly's defense or exaggerating Dunn's defense at 1B. Pauly ranked dead last in +/- last year (yes, behind Dunn).
  25. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 05:52 PM) lol@that ever happening. But I digress. We just signed Adam Dunn. I'm content for now. I know I know. Maybe KW can convince him. Show him a chart of how much our system currently sucks and how much our drafting philosophy sucks. He must be able to put together a very convincing argument.
