I feel like we will find out this week that Os aren’t gonna trade him.
-
Kinda surprised they have that many tbh.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 11:30 AM) I don't feel like reading through 100 pages...is there an actual idea of what a package would be? With only 1 year left its really hard to judge. Wonder if Fulmer would be a good headliner with maybe a Spencer Adams and Micker? Something like even close? Maybe throw in Yolmer... No. Some major leaguers may be included and it isn’t kopech mincada. That’s all we know.

I mean good news is AZ farm is bad so we could beat it without too strong of an offer bad news is we are still being mentioned. Come on Angelos, work your terrible decision making magic.

I actually like Finn much more than last movie now and think they did push his evolution from self-interest to “friend”-interested to now rebel-focused and I say that even though it wasn’t worth distracting the movie with.

I just saw it. It’s kinda like season 3/4 of lost. It was too long, there are way too many characters, and two movies in we are still only figuring out what the overarching fight is. The bad news about snoke dying is he could set this trilogy up for being “bigger” by having controlled things for years. The good news is now with kr we know the primary motivations of the empire. All the past stuff has been disposed and they can move on. The bad news is they couldn’t figure out how to make the past really work. It’s just a mess. They want to make Star Wars movies, but they don’t have a Star Wars story. Oh there’s a good Jedi and a bad Jedi? Great.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 16, 2017 -> 09:38 AM) What’s funny is if Baltimore really wanted to prevent Machado from going to the Yankees, they’d agree to a 72 hour window with us, the Cardinals, the Phillies, etc. Obviously it’s highly unlikely he’d agree to anything, but what if one of these teams offered him 10/$400M right now? This whole keep him from the Yankees priority is pretty stupid IMO. I get not trading him directly to them or allowing a team like us to spin him right away to them, but ultimately there is nothing they can do to prevent the Yankees from signing him next offseason. Might as well go the 72 hour route before proceeding down the path they’re already going down. I don’t understand this criticism of Balt as unreasonable. For a 72 hr window to work there would have to be some inclination the player would do it and no word from Machados camp would indicate they will.

Also this rumor was a lot more fun when it was supposed to wrap up yesterday.

If this guy thinks Machado is destined to be a yankee why would they trade Torres for him now...

2017-18 official NBA discussion thread
bmags replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Weirdest part of NBA to me has been how long it has taken some of these young teams to make “the leap” like the bulls did in 2010-11. All the hype I heard about 76ers this year and they are currently ... .500. The bucks are a few games over. The pels stay stuck mired in mediocrity. Meanwhile teams like the raptors and nuggets get way less hype and won more, though I know nuggets are where bucks are except in western conference. I guess the wizards were like that for a few years too before finally getting a top 3 seed. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 04:02 PM) Maybe that's why he's leaking the Yanks info to some people in order to avoid being traded? WE have no idea if Michael Kay is doing anything except just assuming he wants to be a yankee because all yankees people think everyone wants to be a yankee.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 03:05 PM) Why would Philadelphia trade for him? They lost more games than the White Sox last year. They just signed Carlos Santana, they signed Neshek back, Crawford will be up full time and their pitchers are healthy and in year 3. Full year of Rhys. They would trade for him same reason we would, whatever this "leg up" is in negotiations.

Ive said it before, but if we strike out in FA, I think we should take on Hammel from the Royals. We'd have to give up nothing and he was bad last year but he has an arm and is a respected vet.

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 02:53 PM) https://mobile.twitter.com/DanClarkSports/s...772034241044480 I liked this rumor a lot more when it was expected to be over today. I think I'm moving on from the cardinals saving us to the ...Phillies now?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 02:46 PM) I am just saying that it doesn't improve their odds, and if you follow White Sox history, does indicate, they really aren't committed to being the highest bidder, which, for Manny Machado, is the death knell to their chances. And, everyone tries to qualify that, well as long as they don't give up much...that isn't going to happen either. So moving on would be deleting the entire thread. I read most of the "experts" out there, many who know Machado, many who know more MLB players than me, and the vast majority of them don't get it either. But Rick Hahn said it, and he currently is on a shrine, so it must be true. If the White Sox do make the trade and give up an impressive package as Gonzalez wrote, and Machado leaves with the Sox getting nothing, someone should be held accountable. Would you agree with that? If I'm to be honest, I think it does improve their odds. OR I think it will at least provide the white sox, who clearly were planning to go after Machado, to know whether Machado will decide early or do the maximum leverage play of forcing teams against each other until Jan/Feb. Like, for instance, say they negotiate and get an idea of his headspace, but Machado wants to know on the market, but their new relationship leads to the idea that he'll get some offers, but if the white sox match his highest offer he'll sign with them, and not continue to shop it around. I think reinsdorf feels comfortably aggressive when he knows the deal can get done quick (abreu). But I think he hates situations like Cespedes, and, the one I think he always thinks of is Rodriguez. I think the White Sox do want Machado in their longterm plans, and have a aggressive offer planned, but will not play the game of months long jockeying. They are paying potentially good prospects to know the above. It's a terrible idea. But I do think it is attractive to them for the scenarios above, it either increases their opportunity or gives them certainty a lot sooner that they need a plan b, whom they can move aggressively on with a big offer. edit: you also added a last sentence. And hell yes, if we do this and we don't get him and we gave up 2-3 pitchers in my "likely to be MLB" pitchers tier, I would go back to having zero trust in our Front Office and wanting them to be fired.

OTOH if I was nominated for a federal judgeship I would have been refreshing pretty hard especially before nominations.

Is he even throwing yet? When would he get here like July?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 02:38 PM) Until this came up, I have never read one post on this board discussing the advantages of trading prospects for prospective free agents to better position you to sign them in a year. Not when the Sox were trying to win, when it would at least make a little sense, and certainly not during a rebuild and a season where they aren't going to win. Correct, and that's why it has been so unpopular. Like 95% of people is saying it isn't worth the risk. On the other hand, I haven't read a single person indicate that it would guarantee the white sox sign him, yet that is the direction you have chosen to beat with a giant stick into this thread for hours. Can we move on?

2y 8 mill for astros. Not a bad deal. Unless he's terrible again.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 01:55 PM) Everyone has different experiences working or playing or eating or being in the same places. What makes it a slam dunk that Machado's experience would be so great the White Sox would be in the front of the line. No one would give you an absolute, I'm sure Hahn wouldn't. I'm sure he'd tell you, as he has told the media, that they think it would be easier than going in cold, i.e. increase their chances and not guarantee it.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 01:50 PM) Jansen and Turner had larger offers? I thought the Dodgers also threw the most money out there. While Heyward technically signed for less money, the potential to opt out in 3 years gave him the potential to earn more money if he signed with the Cubs instead of the Cardinals. Obviously, that didn't work out his way, but I don't think that's the best example. Jansen was reportedly offered more by the Nats, and I've heard over and over that Turner could have gotten more. The market wasn't great but 4 for 52 or whatever was cheap. And maybe that's true, but sox would have same opportunity. Heyward made a big deal about hwo he didn't choose the best offer, though. edit: turner was 4 for 64.
-
So notably: -Kenley Janson signed with Dodgers for less money (returning team or big market?) - Justin Turner signed with Dodgers for less money (returning team or big market) - Jason Heyward signed with Cubs for less money (...big market?) - Dexter Fowler signed with Cards for most money - Yo Cespedes is up for debate. - Chapman went to Yanks for most money ...It happens but...it sure seems like some of the bigger franchises have been getting discounts despite it being incredibly perverse

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 11:39 AM) Any chance we could do a heavily front-loaded deal with an opt out after a few years? I 100% believe he will try to double dip on his terms. As much as people say 400 is gonna happen, I think 10 for 350 with the first 5 years paying 200 million with a player optout is highly likely.
-
To clarify, while I don't believe in the long-term doom and gloom over parity in MLB, I do think we have seen some NBA-ification in the MLB where players are going to the richest teams even as they aren't offering the best money, but just because they know they will be relevant during the contract and they were CLOSE ENOUGH.
-
While people say he'll take the best offer, it's easy for me to foresee a scenario where teams like the Phillies and Cardinals offer the most money, but he opts to go to the Yankees lesser offer that keeps them under the luxury tax to be more competitive. So yes, I do think there is a competitive tier we can be in that will rely on some je nais sai quois that could be involved in influencing, including locking down another big 2018 free agent before him. But still not in favor of this trade! I just think the whole "he'll take best offer" isn't necessarily accurate after the way we've seen the last few years shake out.
