  1. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 01:35 PM) I really hope Andrew Luck comes back. He is fun to watch. Would be a shame if that shoulder ended his career. It would suck, especially considering how much papering over of their bad roster he did. Imagine a good situation? He could have been a very unique player.
  2. I'm actually glad they didn't either. Could backfire big time, also sets up locker room where players know they aren't all equal.
  3. Mirotic showcasing at the 5 instead of the 3 was so helpful for his trade value. It's what sets him apart from Lopez. Lopez is a good basketball player but when you look at the contenders, few have a need for a mostly post-up C, even as he's tried to stretch out.
  4. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 12:20 PM) If he is comfortable in Chicago and paid well, he probably stays. I'm sure thought of putting together even a half decent defense in Green Bay with Aaron Rodgers means he gets a shot at winning the Super Bowl is something he will have to think about. I feel like Fangio is kinda in the stage of life where he's his own man, is just there to coach some D and be left alone, and so I don't really know where that puts him. Maybe just some place he wants to live more.
  5. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 12:12 PM) I actually very much like our model. You can't get yourself burned in free agency but you need to play in it. We've missed at times in free agency and Pace has specifically said it is an area that you need to get better, but if you can't hit and win in the draft you are going to be in trouble. Additionally, as it relates to the Jaguars they had played big in free agency for a while without winning. Heck, look at the Eagles/Redskins who had a number of years of being offseason champions without showing a ton for it. I think the key is in how you structure the deals to protect yourself and take calculated risks which won't cripple you down the road and Pace has surprised me in terms of how he has managed the cap (given how bad the Saints managed it) and I think that is a testimate to Cliff Stein and probably even ole Ted Phillips. The Eagles and Redskins have been in the playoffs many more times than the bears in the last 7 decade. And again, the point of the article is with the reduced rookie salaries and increased cap it's hard to cripple yourself. Yeah, I'd rather have gone after big fish like Jaguars along with big drafts than wasted money on "discount bin" players like Wheaton, Demps, Cooper and Glennon. Calais Campbell worked out pretty sweet for them. Julius Thomas didn't, and yet Julius Thomas didn't cripple them. It's not an argument that the bears should forget the draft and only do free agency, but you can go big in FA and not kill yourselves like the saints did when he was there for multiple years.
  6. https://twitter.com/TheSteinLine/status/950789110809202688 (Now both Utah and Pistons in on Nikola). Considering apparently Niko has not removed his trade demand, I think he will be gone fairly soon. Obviously first round pick takes preference. I would love him for utah, personally. Interested to see value. Glad multiple teams in on him.
  7. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 11:31 AM) I don't think the Ted Thompson model of draft and develop is an obsolete model. He just took it to an extreme. Teams that draft poorly and spend big money on free agents are usually bad. They may have one good year, but there isn't that long term success. But that extreme is who he referenced as the ideal. ANd it's not arguing that draft poorly is a model, it's that mistakes in FA are less impactful than in past, so you can try and go big in free agency without being crippled like in the past.
  8. It really is jarring after so much of my life watching nearly everything work out perfectly for the lakers to see this completely endless pathetic rebuild by them.
  9. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 11:03 AM) I can't say I know their cap situation and how it works as compared to with the Eagles and Browns were detailed in teh story but it seems like the Wheaton and Glennon contracts could impact what would have been able to be rolled over inot this offseason. I was unaware of the rollover options. Makes the bad middle of the road FA signings worse. Although keeping guys on teh field would help. Isn't Ted Phillips the cap guru? It's more that Pace modeled (verbally) his ideal of making the Bears the Ted Thompson Packers which is now showing to be an obsolete model. Hopefully he is moving on and more open to Free Agent risks. Also here is a great Dan Durkin article for those subscribed to the athletic: https://theathletic.com/206764/2018/01/09/w...o-other-option/
  10. Can't say I read this and thought "Ryan Pace has his finger on the pulse on the cutting edge of NFL trends" https://www.theringer.com/2018/1/9/16867564...eagles-patriots
  11. It will be fascinating to see if they aggressively push someone to AA or put a guy down in A kanny like Adolfo while the upper level sorts itself out.
  12. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Jan 8, 2018 -> 09:18 PM) This. There are quite a few players beyond the top 10 or even 15 in the White Sox farm system for whom it isn't a stretch to see a productive MLB future. In that regard, the system is very pitching heavy. Just keep in mind they aren't in isolation, they are comparing them to the padres and yankees who have quite a bit more players thanks to a more successful LatAm program to this point. The white sox 15-30 is obviously way better than the mariners or angels, but it's justifying why they may not be top farm despite saying their top 5 are best in game.
  13. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 10:15 AM) I get everything you are saying but it's not really worth arguing over for a week's time. What's done is done. Time to see if it pays off or not. Nothing really to argue over until we see results. Ha, sorry I wasn't actually replying to your question, I meant to be replying to your assessment of the accepted volatility within the trade.
  14. the tank is back. Pretty much seems like trading Mirotic will ensure good tanking.
  15. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 09:35 AM) Is this really worth arguing over for like, a week's time? He will probably suck but it's possible he can be good due to the volatility of relief pitchers. At worst, he sucks and we cut him and he eats some innings. At best, he's decent enough to flip for something. Let it goooooo. Yes. When I like the process of the move I can accept failure. The process here was good, because regardless of anything else I do actually subscribe to the idea that putting a horrible bullpen behind young starting pitchers could cause some bad mental habits. The other side of it is possible trade assets for a better asset than I feel we gave up ($$ + peter).
  16. QUOTE (KnightsOnMintSt @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 09:48 AM) Anyone here live in the area? The Dash could be a really fun team to watch this season. Have the potential to have Robert, Burger, Sheets, Basabe, Adolfo, Rutherford, Cease, Skoug, Fisher, and Call all at the same time this season. I went to a game there last year when I visited Raleigh. Worth the drive from Raleigh for that stadium. When I went, Collins sat and the only notable players was really Basabe (who homered the go ahead run) and Mendick. Awesome stadium, will be really cool with all the players and Vizquel.
  17. Really good ratings last night: https://twitter.com/richarddeitsch/status/950755663231307776
  18. Dang if there was a prop bet for who would have started the Oprah for President thread I probably would have bet on caulfield and lost.
  19. FWIW the royals zips were also brutal and only slightly better by like 1 projected WAR. So, yes fair to say will be hard to do much worse when facing royals/tigers a bunch.
  20. Why would they need to do that when you would already remind them of it in every single post for the next four years? edit: make it 10 years.
  21. Cool, I thought he left for some reason. He was surprisingly good last year so was hoping he could have at it again.
  22. Do we still hold the rights to Infante?
  23. https://theathletic.com//206862/2018/01/09/...d/?redirected=1 Post-coach hire fawning praise Excerpt Not the best written article but the guy worked with him in 2010.
  24. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 8, 2018 -> 10:00 PM) Seemed like only a minor upgrade for him school wise, must’ve been a big pay increase? Fitz did well though, hate saying that. Probably attractive because Fitz is unlikely to ever leave and rarely changes assistants.
