  1. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Sep 14, 2017 -> 09:49 AM) It's a good bill, that if anything is bringing attention to medicare for all, that is becoming a more popular idea in this country every day. You keep saying that you support single payer, but seem to say it's a bad idea every time Bernie Sanders or others try to get things passed. It's just the same pessimistic attitude from Democrats over and over. The party of "we won't be able to do that". It is a downpayment on intent. The bill itself will need to change, and it clearly is likely the workability will largely be more in line with a medicare buy-in, however, this is the only new policy the democrats have introduced that has generated publicity that cuts through the daily noise and has organic excitement. DACA/Dream act I consider separate but has very good mobilization by some great grass roots orgs. Sanders is basically the only democrat that matters right now until someone can show the same ability to form a message.
  2. Like, I'm hoping there is some self reflection after making a comment like this: If they can introduce changes made they should. But to act like that is even linear is absurd. Had the CPD and City government actually confronted how something like Burge could have happened on their watch and really grappled with it, there may not have needed to be reforms 25 years later largely forced on the City after a shocking shooting of a teenager.
  3. https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20170914/ed...nder-jon-police I find this crazy. I recognize Edison Park would be an area of a lot of police officers. But to me the Burge era and the after-effects is one of the biggest influencing events in Chicago of the last 30 years. I'm glad they are teaching Chicago history though, that is pretty cool.
  4. Reddy on Medicare for all - Meaningless bill that won't pass Reddy on Better Deal press conference people have already forgotten- This is a game changer!
  5. Beer is apparently sucking with wood bats again. I mean whose to say he isn't selected where that Rooker was this year?
  6. We'll be better. Bullpen being average may depend on whether Nate Jones exists for a year, but I think we are a little lucky with how stable they've been the last 2 months. I'd expect next year to be 2013/4 level frustrating from our pen. The only part of that is I may be underestimating some help from players currently in AA in our second half, or players like Bummer taking a leap.
  7. The interesting trap the league could get caught up in is what if Otani signs for only 3-4 million and then has major contributions to a playoff team/WS team. There could totally be Sal Perez-esque stories highlighting how such a good player was the lowest paid on the team. The Royals soon after bumped up Perez' contract. What would league do here? Lot of what-ifs obviously but I fun to think about.
  8. I think ReyLo and Giolito are learning how to k hitters when their secondary stuff isn't capable of it. We will see the fruits of that soon. But on days like this, I like the gutsiness, probably a little bit of luck. Really like when they are working through things at this level and still finding ways to get out of trouble.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 13, 2017 -> 03:00 PM) The little kid in front of me caught a Buster Posey bat on Saturday night. It's better than catching a ball. I told him to sell it when Buster makes the HOF. Was my dream as a kid. That or a players hockey stick.
  10. QUOTE (turnin' two @ Sep 13, 2017 -> 12:26 PM) Danny Hultzen and Trevor Bauer went 2 and 3 in that draft. With Dylan Bundy and Bubba Starling 4 and 5. A lot of better talent taken down in the draft... Hopefully the Sox don't look take a Trevor Bauer over a Lindor or Jose Fernandez. But, man was there a lot of impact talent in that draft. Right now it's lining up to look like pitchers slotting into 2-3 but in terms of profile I'd really like this to be a prep SS year for the sox. Don't get many shots at those guys.
  11. I thought I heard in order to get Otani in the first place his team promised that they would not put a large posting fee when he decided to go stateside.
  12. I thought Adam would struggle making team next year with more guys getting close for time, but I realized he really only has Leury and May competing for CF, so he probably has our 4th outfield locked down.
  13. 300k is too much for a player that may bust, let's spend it on a 16 year old venezuelan kid instead.
  14. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 13, 2017 -> 07:49 AM) Because many of the kids that play in the NFL can't take a partial scholarship to play baseball in college and they also don't want to wait 6-7 years to get a payday in their sport likely. That's just one reason. I understand your point, but even the arb numbers are better than most of the "payday" deals these guys get.
  15. So Callis said this is the best draft since 2011.
  16. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 13, 2017 -> 10:10 AM) Thankfully it's September and not July or else I'd be worried. ha
  17. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 13, 2017 -> 10:14 AM) You think teams would try to keep him in the minors for 10 days or whatever it is to get the extra year of control? I feel like a team would have to agree that they will put him on the opening day roster right away. He's ready to play now. Keeping him in the minors for a year is way overvaluing 7 years from now over today. Doesn't make sense to me.
  18. Also lets keep in mind the reputation of "overload" on Japanese pitchers. Kenta Maeda came over and had "the worst medicals anyone has ever seen".
  19. Should we be worried about the dodgers?
  20. I get that the idea of being a hundred millionaire seems incredible, but this guy is going to be really rich no matter which way he chooses. The top Japanese players make like 5mill a year. If he bombs spectacularly he'll be able to go back to Japan and live like a rich person for the rest of his life. On the other hand, he has this depreciating asset which he has no possibility of gaining later in life, unlike money. He only has 6-8 or so years in his athletic "prime". His dream is to prove he is the best. Wasting 25% of that time just so you can become unfathomably rich instead of incredibly rich? It's not that crazy.
  21. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 12, 2017 -> 12:11 PM) 20 off days besides the four day break, and they still have a stretch of 33 games in 34 days. June 5 - July 8. Scheduling 2,430 games for 30 teams is a tough thing. brutal, but hopefully with more of the AA guys in Charlotte next year will have some better candidates for spot starts and bullpen help.
  22. It's amazing how watchable this team has been with the exception of July.
  23. One thing for clarity: - I'm thrilled we sold when we did.- The benefit to selling when we did was getting the top farm pieces from the loaded systems of playoff contenders that had excess pieces to trade. The systems of the cubs/nats/red sox have been largely raided by the white sox and padres. It took those aggressive teams out of the bidding wars for the top available players, and the loaded, top teams left are Astros and Dodgers who have less inclination to remove them. I am 100% convinced if we waited we'd have a worse group of farm systems to trade with unless ATL and MIL get a whole lot better quick. - That said, I think it's reasonable we are in playoff hunt with roster brought back. The funny thing is the convincing argument is if we brought back AJAX and Avila, and did not cut Avi. But I swear what would have happened is we cut Avi, we sign a worse CF and ride our C situation. Maybe we trade for LuCroy, I don't know. It wouldn't matter that much.
