President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 09:17 AM) There's not a single, unassailable source of news information that this board could agree upon...if there is/was, would love to hear it. By definition, for roughly 35% of the country, only Trump, Fox News and the Wall Street Journal are reliable. Hardly anyone ever reads the likes of Time, Newsweek and US News & World Report anymore. Maybe, I think overall though people would agree that Youtube and Yahoo comment sections aren't worth much.

Rick Hahn & Kenny Williams Sign Long Term Extensions
If I was 81 and didn't want to rebuild and had made tens of millions through sweet heart public financing and connections to MLB, I'd say "I'm going to spend a lot of my own money to build the best player development, talent scouting, and mlb roster" and see what happens but I guess that's why i'm not rich. And the thread devolves into a thousand spirals. Kudos to Hahn and Kenny. WHen compared to Jerry's other dynamic duo they did much more to show vision and leadership.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
I'm not sure "The president is an unreliable source, so I can use other unreliable sources to inform myself" is logical. I called out using comments on Yahoo news as unreliable, I don't need to ground that with naming other unreliable sources e.g. the president. Also unreliable, chain emails from my uncle.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 08:20 AM) It was a unite the right gathering, not a peaceful protest of the removal of a statue President doesn't want to comment until he has all the facts claims. Not sure why you are responding to that with your comment, things like the drive by seem like we would have heard about that. I've heard a mix of some of those things from reports but comment sections have tendency to play telephone with real events. And when they fabricate I think it undercuts the many powerful true stories of Saturday.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 06:26 AM) From Robyn, Charlottesville resident "There seems to be a perception from people outside of charlottesville that what is going on here is two opposing groups coming to town and fighting some ideological battle that has gotten messy. That is not what is happening here. What is happening here is that several hate groups from the extreme right have come together under the "unite the right " banner here in our town and basically started acting as terrorists. This may seem like an exaggeration but it's not. A church service was held over because they had surrounded the building and police had to disperse them. People had to be escorted to their cars. My friend was there with her daughter. Everywhere they meet, businesses close. We had drive by shootings yesterday from a van marked k k k. A car plowed into a huge group of people. I'm sure you saw that on the newsfeeds. What you probably didn't see is that some of those people were on there way back from helping to repel a white supremacist march to predominately black housing development a few blocks away where they were attempting home invasions. I guess they were unfamiliar with the neighborhood. The residents repelled that one before antifa got there but there is some video of the altright folks getting run off on the daily progress twitter feed, if you're interested. So, basically, what I'd like you to understand is, this IS NOT two side egging each other on to unavoidable violence for more attention. This is one side of terrorists declaring that they can and will hold a town hostage (they've been saying it for over a month now, actually) and the town responding to that threat. The car that killed and injured people yesterday? Ohio tags. The medic tents, water bottles, snacks, shade tents (all volunteer, donations, none shut down by police... all manned by that radical left you keep hearing about) yeah, we all live here. I saw a lot of people I knew yesterday, none of them were speaking for unite the right. None of them were escalating violence, most of them were offering some kind of aid and defending. I'm glad you're following the situation, but your generalizations are inaccurate in this case. Be blessed." https://www.yahoo.com/news/lawmakers-weigh-...-082540773.html Top reader comment following this story Rainbow flag flying North Carolina woman confronts man flying Nazi flag at his home https://www.yahoo.com/news/north-carolina-w...-180615457.html https://www.yahoo.com/news/tearful-van-jone...-035620606.html Van Jones broke down as he said he was thinking of his godmother, who is Jewish and whose family had suffered during World War II, and how she cannot count on the President of the United States to defend and sympathize with her. “It’s not just the people you’re emboldening,” Jones said of Trump’s comments. “It’s the people you’re abandoning, who now don’t know if they have a government that gives a damn about them ... I don’t know what to say tonight ... I’m sitting here hurt.” I really doubt the accuracy of all of that first post. Yahoo comment sections as news unlikely to reward your intelligence.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 05:40 PM) I rarely post in this section of the forum because I really don't like getting into arguments on views, ideologies, etc. I also don't follow news very often anymore and it's made me such a happier person. What happened last weekend was basically impossible to not follow along with. It's so disgraceful that we have people in this country in some capacity think it's alright to either be or pretend to be a Nazi. Idolizing Hitler is so far off and makes me sick. Both of my grandfathers fight in World War II and to me, there is nothing more disrespectful to that generation, especially the WWII vets who are still alive. As far as Trump's comments about the situation, I can see why people are upset about it. I'm probably in the minority but I can also see why he blames both sides. Before I get thrown off the forum let me say that if I was given the opportunity to be there, I definitely would've shown up and supported the protesters to these hate groups. But I wouldn't have brought weapons to this demonstration. Seeing both sides bring weapons shows that each were looking for a fight. While I entirely blame these white supremacy groups, I also do not think the protesters are innocent in this fight. The one's who were actually fighting at least. Just the feelings. The thing is, it is so incredibly easy to make a statement as president that denounces the purpose of the march, reaffirms 1st amendment rights, and urges non violent resistance as seen by every president ever, and the gov/mayor in the situation. Don't let him off the hook. Had I asked you for a statement after the car act you would have put up a better response, and we aren't presidents with comms teams. We are just decent people.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
And again I know it's silly, but I'm truly shocked by today's events. Not because I didn't think he was capable of selling out humanity again, but every once in a while you realize when the trump show hits reality. This poor woman's death in any other era would cause reflection. He is incapable of siding against anyone who vehemently supports him, which at this point is basically his weaponized trolls and white supremacists.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 04:32 PM) I dont really know where most people on this site lean, because (imo) most of the arguments on this board actually arent left or right. Nobody really argues about free trade, immigration, etc. anymore. When those topics do come up, you would be surprised that most of the people on these boards have pretty different opinions. For the past year the majority of the posts/arguments (imo) have been anti-Trump. The problems start to arise because Democrats/left want to force Republicans/right to disassociate from Trump. So anytime Trump is an idiot, it leads to a similar argument "If youre a Republican youre okay with what happened." To be fair, I can only recall 1 poster on this site openly supporting Trump. I believe that, the association with Nazis/KKK etc) is mostly out of frustration because some people really believe that Trump is leading the US down a terrible path, and that no amount of alleged jobs, etc are worth the damage that he is doing. As an American, I feel that my credibility/respect takes a hit every day because of Trump. Its not a good feeling, especially when the person who is supposed to be our representative does not seem to care at all about how we are perceived. A lot of people have disliked my comments about GWB as compared to Trump, but it really just shows how far the country has fallen. I may not have agreed with GWB's ideas, but I think that beneath it all he was a good person trying to do his best. You see him having a good time with Michelle Obama, you see the respect that our former Presidents have for each other. And then you see Trump. And personally its hard for me to accept that anyone would support a party that willingly got into bed with him. And maybe it would be different if everyone rallied against Trump. But too often it seems (at least to me) that Republican's are willing to agree if they think it will help them in the end game. That bothers me, because certain things you have to stand against. This sums up my beliefs well.

2017 Tennis Thread
I historically liked Sharapova because I thought she was really crafty and dug deep in matches to come back when she was dead on the ropes. But I've really hated the way she has handled everything around her suspension. Really comes across as she wants this to be like an underdog comeback tour for her, and I don't know why she should deserve that.

Updated Fangraphs Top 10 Sox Prop
Yeah and per Longenhagen's comments Hansen's rise wasn't just about Fulmer falling. EL really likes Moncada Jimenez and Kopech. I think if you ask him, he has the next 3 guys (Giolito/Lopez/Robert) in the next tier, so I wouldn't put too much stock in the Giolito over Lopez. Longenhagen definitely seems to like his tier system more as being an accurate representation of his thoughts, but fangraphs writers gotta be prolific, so here's a top 10

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 03:21 PM) I'd be willing to bet that he'd be much better batting as a RH vs LHP than he would if he were batting as a LH- even if he's poor as a RHH. Yeah rarely have I seen the "drops switch hitting" lead to some big results.

2018 MLB Draft
Good stuff from Longenhagen: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/eric-longen...cts-chat-815-2/ Nick 12:13 What did you think of Turang, De Sedas, and Gorman at the PG game in San Diego? Eric A Longenhagen 12:15 Turang is a plus athlete, future plus glove at short for me even with just average hands. Arm is plus. Not sure what kind of impact he's going to have with the bat. I do think he's very difficult to strike out. He ground out a great AB vs Rocker Sunday night. But there's some length there, he pushes the ball the other way an awful lot, not sure there's enough for him to be 1-1 or anything like that. 12:16 De Sedas: Love the raw power from both sides of the plate, looked fine at short during in and out but didn't see enough of it in games to know if he fits there. That's something that will play out next spring but he's got first round tools. Worst case scenario for that kind of power with infield actions is what happened to Luis Curbelo two drafts ago where, once clubs started really watching him, he struggled to hit and fell. 12:17 Gorman was probably the best performer of the last few weeks. Hit in games, homered and doubled the opposite way in the last week, made some nice defensive plays, throws well. Looks great.

I don't think we'll get so lucky. Didn't everyone know Harper for years? Still think we'll get a shot at a really good player. Maybe I'm just paying attention more but people seem to really like the 2018 prep class.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
Really, really nice pull of an original source here. Report in 1868 from commanding officer and veteran of civil war, who was a southerner who fought for union. He's giving a report on the states he is overseeing and discussing the violence and contempt hanging around post war. This line was pulled by author: “whereby the crime of treason might be covered with a counterfeit varnish of patriotism, so that the precipitators of rebellion might go down in history hand in hand with the defenders of the Government.” http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/the-ba...ted-immediately Reconstruction is an incredibly poorly covered time in US history.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 09:45 AM) That team is going to be fun to watch next year. Poor Charlotte. I actually think Charlotte will be okay. Likely to have a lot of the same guys that are rotating in and out of our majors. Just not an exciting prospect group. Edit: yeah honestly I think Charlotte will be better this year because Birmingham has good pitching talent (albeit helped by that field)
