NCAA basketball thread 2017-18
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 24, 2017 -> 01:01 PM) Jesus, DePaul could have a good team for the first time since I was in elementary school. That is crazy. They weren't that bad in thru 90s/early 2000s. Still made tourneys and had interesting pro prospects.

Increasingly likely if not certain Jontay Porter will be a part of the 2017 class. He is a 4 who can pass and shot 40% from 3 in AAU. Started to really rebound this year. 1: Terrence Phillips/Blake Harris/Jordan Geist (used to be a starter) 2: Robertson/CJ Roberts/Cullen Van Leer (played 30 mpg sometimes last year) 3: MPJ/Jordan Barnett/Van Leer 4: JPorter/Kevin Puryear/MPJ/Barnett 5: Tilmon/JPorter/Puryear/Nikko/Smith Crazy.

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ May 24, 2017 -> 10:21 AM) That makes sense. I read the original post as catastrophe policies were purchased on the private market. If it was catastrophic Medicare for all with a dental like model for ordinary care, that's a much more interesting idea to me. Yeah, I think one thing is the California bill goes too far imo, it would be incredibly expensive and have an unclear disruption to many people employed by health care. I thought public option would be the only thing politically possible after 2010 but it seems like there is more support even from insurance industry for a form of single payer. I think it needs to be vetted.

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ May 24, 2017 -> 09:53 AM) Doesn't that model ultimately restrict access to healthcare for people? My understanding of the concept of concierge medicine is that you pay an annual fee to your doctor in exchange for certain services. It's basically like paying a retainer to a lawyer. And as you use the services, the doctor eats away at the retainer. That model, it seems to me, would lead to fewer people having access to healthcare, because fewer people would be able to afford to put their doctor on retainer. Health insurance would exist literally for catastrophes. How, under this model, does someone living paycheck to paycheck access a doctor when they get strep throat, or for an annual physical? Well, you can look at Canada for a model of more limited service but with a 30% private insurance industry still there. I would be supportive of this. It, after all, would not be so different than dental, except people would have the government insurance to fall back on for surgery. Americans consume more healthcare than other nations for often elective things. Concierge could let them pay for more services, but ultimately for most getting insurance for 3-4 scheduled checkups per year plus the governmental insurance. Is that *worse* than what we have now? I'm not so sure. 1 it would encourage some decrease in the use of excess healthcare. We've seen such sluggish growth and some of it has to be due to going to such a service heavy industry like healthcare which has shown very little ability to scale in a way that decreases pricing. (i.e. we are a 2017 hospital, we all have machinery for MRIs and CT scans paid for many times over, we should see competition that decreases the price we ask for these machines, except actually we will charge same amount or increasing amount to hide the costs that we incur from our inefficient health care system) I would be open to it. I think there are better options, but universal, full stop, coverage so that nobody gets bankrupted from pregnancy or disease would be a big step. Would like to see mental health also covered.

President Donald Trump: The Thread

Hall of Fame criteria for pitchers now
QUOTE (Sox-35th @ May 24, 2017 -> 09:55 AM) Lester might get in because he played for the Red Sox and the Cubs. Otherwise, I'm not so sure. Yeah, I say that more about his longevity, and how rare it seems to be now. 10 years from now he may stand out a lot more than he does compared to 10 years ago peers.

Hall of Fame criteria for pitchers now
HOF for pitchers is getting interesting. I was pretty surprised when I learned Halladay would have a tough time. For the prime years I grew up following baseball, it was Halladay tossing 220 plus innings with a low 3 ERA. 10 years of being really really good. So many other pitchers seem like they spurt and fall off. Could only say Kershaw is the one shoe-in at this point, Hernandez after that. Sale has a good chance, but needs to keep it up through age 31-32 at least, and who knows. I guess Lester could have a shot. Bumgarner if he gets back and pitches like this for 4-5 more years. 150 is the new 200

2017 MLB DRAFT
QUOTE (fathom @ May 23, 2017 -> 08:57 PM) Heard something interesting about Adell on BA podcast. A scout said best pitcher he faced in hs this year might have been able to pitch at the Juco level I truly hate myself for saying this but how good do you think the pitchers Trout faced were in smalltown Jersey? He's been in multiple showcases that were the reason for his helium initially. I think that stuff is overthought. I know C Hawkins and all but this draft seems kinda meh, and we don't have a surplus of power after AAA in our system. I'd be happy with Addell but I don't think we draft him.

Explosions at Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, UK
Yeah the Times Square incident was tragic, but it really was a sign of good foresight and design where they had been putting those up for years to protect the heavy pedestrian crowds.

I wish Ben Badler hadn't included that quote about him being the best hitter on the planet. Seems like all discussion needs to be disproving that or fighting people that aren't claiming he's best hitter ever.

Rodon/Petricka/Jones threw Sim games
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 23, 2017 -> 01:02 PM) It's almost as if they wanted to keep him on ice a bit this year so they wouldn't win too many games. If he was what he was at the end of last season, sub him for Covey, and that's a pretty good rotation. Maybe they are buying a little time for Q to get traded, and keep some wear and tear off Rodon's arm, but even that may be crazy because I doubt Boras would be too keen on the Sox holding out his client for no reason. I would be thrilled if that were the case. I'm worried it's more "something is wrong but they don't know what" so we just keep seeing heavy rest and light load and hope it magically clears up.

Tilson should go to AAA anyway. At this point would rather see Leury continue in CF spelled by Willy.

2017 Democratic Thread
https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archiv...eration/527229/ I can't take these stories. As part of any infrastructure or environmental package, the priority of lead removal and safety has to be a part of any future legislation at a national level. All the energy from people to get low income children to eat exactly what they want, how about we start by preventing them from being poisoned?

Nationals acquire Doolittle/Madson from As
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ May 22, 2017 -> 05:39 PM) Fair point but how many guys signed for 300k end up being nothing? Not exactly like your examples are representative of the average signing. All of the ones the white Sox sign.

Luis Robert signing official
QUOTE (New Era on South Side @ May 22, 2017 -> 04:46 PM) Can we just make the consensus to call him Robert or Ro-beart instead of Ro-bear until the White Sox confirm the name? Or are we going to be like that dumbass stoner Danny Parkins and say Ro-bear (like Voltaire)? White Sox confirmed Robert (T pronounced), and also you are on a message board son we can't hear you pronounce it

I just want to reiterate the need we get more production out of INTL scouting. Washington signed Robles for 225k. Atlanta signed Albies for 350k. Signed Acuna for 100k. NWe are prepared to send out a 1st round pick for players we could have identified ourselves. These aren't the crazy bonuses of players or even million dollar signings like Torres and Juan Soto. Drives me nuts how almost all of our trade targets were largely bargain J2 signings.

Walking Out of Graduations Like Notre Dame's
It's funny reading pro-slavery primary sources and the very popular and essentailly marxist arguments they were making against capitalism as to justify why slavery was actually humane. My favorite part about that is it is a sign of the dominance politics to come. I guarantee they did not actually believe it, but they took an honest critique of 19th century capitalism to gain legitimacy in their argument and deflect from their barbarism.
