  1. QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 9, 2016 -> 11:26 AM) That's hyperbolic to say the least. It would certainly split their coalition or 1/3 to 2/3rds. Hard to win an election when 30% of your party no longer wants to vote for you.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Aug 9, 2016 -> 10:59 AM) What's actually nauseating about this thread is that several people are being sanctimonious to others about the impact of not seeing one's child on one's baseball stats, when this thread was actually intended to be the next nail in the coffin about Jose Abreu being "figured out" or his career being "finished." Would the lot of you please get off of your damned high horse and see the forest for the trees, here? JFC, the explanations aren't even consistent. If he was missing his son, why just for the first four months of 2016 specifically was it a factor? Yes, I have no doubt it gets harder as more time passes. However....who the f*** is anyone to tell me that 2 seasons was fine but the 3rd is harder? What the actual f***, guys? Would you guys care to look at Royce Clayton's personal life and tell me what was going on with him that accounted for his abysmal first half in 2001? Maybe if we look hard enough under a rock, we can find personal reasons why Frank Thomas struggled specifically in 1998 with average and 1999 with power numbers. While we are at it, why not explain away a million other things about Adam Dunn, or anyone else over the years in terms of their personal circumstances at the time? In fact, why don't we have a sub-forum with 25 individual threads detailing the day-to-day personal struggles of each member of this team? ...let me bring this thread back into focus with what should have been said three pages ago 3 home runs in 4 games should put to bed this NONSENSE that Jose Abreu is "finished" as a major league hitter or that major league pitching has categorically "figured him out" ...REGARDLESS OF HIS PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCES. He's declined 3 straight years. No one is saying his son could be the only reason he has declined, but it could certainly be a factor. His son just arrived for a visit and his play perked up. Could be a coincidence, but could matter. If I paid you $20 million to be poster on this board, which I wouldn't - to be clear - that's going to greg for a new house, you would have days that your personal life affected your focus. Baseball players play nearly every day for four months. Focus can be an issue. It doesn't mean you couldn't have some great days there, but you may have more bad posts than otherwise because of some personal struggles. People admire Jackie Robinson for putting up with so much off the field threats and criticism and still performing. But really, why are we admiring him? He just needed to play baseball for a couple of swings.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Aug 8, 2016 -> 08:53 PM) I've been excited about call and fisher for a few weeks. I'd like to see fisher promoted to loA, especially if call and remillard are there, why not fisher. I'd be real curious to know how each of those guys are doing defensively I know I probably have said this 3-4 times, but I agree. Let's let this group move up together and learn how to win together as a team.

    Cool we'll miss you.
  7. Crazy how many primetime athletes will have played with each other or run into each other at amateur tournaments.
  8. There are no constituents to solve the housing crisis in California. A crisis that affects all of us by pricing out new workers from migrating to one of the most productive labor forces in the country. http://www.latimes.com/politics/essential/...-htmlstory.html Thought: Maybe California environmental groups onerous regulation on urban housing has contributed to sprawl that has much more negative external effects on the environment in california? You could pass this if it was just he construction unions, but the environmental groups and tenant associations hopping on because they view obstruction as a badge of honor to take back to their obstructionfetished membership group makes it impsossible to fix this problem. Chicago has been traditionally much better about growing where needed, but not perfect. ANd of course, we have the friends of the parks to sue anyone that tries to use any structure on park land, no matter how useless, for development.
  9. Fairly certain we are going to hear McPhee is out for year before the 4th preseason game.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Aug 9, 2016 -> 09:20 AM) This thread is overheating from the takes. No kidding. The ole "If I was making 20 million to play baseball I would have no personal feelings or family ties. I'd never smoke or drink. I'd be in locker room all day and be perfect" takes
  11. Twins didn't trade away any core pieces, just some bullpen, their 29 year old career year player (when can the white sox get one of those?) and bad contract swaps. They got some young power arms back. Kind of sounds like what the white sox should have done in 2015 instead of what they did.
  12. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 8, 2016 -> 05:51 PM) You're not getting McCutcheon for that, but let's say you could, why the hell would you start Tilson as your LF? Would be such a stupid, half-ass White Sox type of move.

It will be nice to see Nolan tackle something like that, where he doesn't just have to explain the rules of the world he created for 3 hrs.
  14. QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 8, 2016 -> 04:02 PM) The terrible part of this whole thing is that lets say they do throw a ton of money out there and grab three of the top FA's and maybe make a trade somewhere in there. Doesnt that just make them the Angels? Who are fundamentally flawed to being with as well so even that doesnt work. Yes, but OTOH if they went out and signed cespedes, encarnacion and whomever is the top catcher I'd appreciate them actually going for it even though it would certainly be fool hardy within 2 years. My preference for selling is assuming they have hit a ceiling where being top bidders for players has been capped at 115 million - 120 million range
  15. Missouri just hired Jim Sterk (AD - San Diego State) as their new Athletic Director. During a year where essentially no good news ever happened and the very worst news happened every day, this was some nice news. I have a lot of respect for the turnaround at SDSU. Despite some success, they turned that program around from basically nothing in football and basketball to consistent winners. Very happy with the hire.
  16. Yeah I think he opts out. Assuming he holds, he'll have had 2 straight 900 OPS seasons, and he'll be compared to older big bats on market (Encarnacion, Bautista) vs last year, competing with Upton/Heyward
  17. QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 8, 2016 -> 11:37 AM) I really wish the Sox FO could come to the realization that there really are no scenarios in which they are "going for it" next season if if they think they are. You cant add to this group with 2 or 3 different dudes and think you are going for it no matter who you add. Unless you are adding superstars which isnt going to happen. I just have zero confidence that after they look at the roster they won't be like "you know if we just sign a DH and a CF we are a good team!" especially after 2 straight years of missing out on the Ian Desmond success stories and instead consistently assuming that we'll get the career years out of 30 year old players.
  18. Prediction, Sox sign Castro © and Joe Smith (RP) to surprisingly reasonable deals, then start rumors that they are active trying to sign Reddick or Cespedes, and are showing heavy interest in Trumbo when it appears their market is more limited than initially thought. Sox claim they will only sign them to the right price, then start leaking that the demands are still unreasonable. Fans start saying "Good, I would never pay x for that player". Cespedes then signs for a deal below what was leaked but high enough that fans say "Good, I don't want to be paying him at age 34". After the initial higher level FAs sign, sox are rumored to be in on Desmond, who signs elsewhere. Eventually they sign Jon Jay to a 2 year $20 million dollar deal. Sox fans immediately dream of his 2016 start and start putting forth crappy lineups like this: Eaton Anderson Abreu Frazier Melky Jay Castro Lawrie Garcia/Tilson/Rotation That's not bad! That could be an 86 win team.
  19. I don't know, I just wish it was consistent (maybe set by IoC)? I tried to find the score to the USA mens basketball game while it was happening on saturday and was unable to find it anywhere that I'd expect (ESPN, CBS sports, etc). It was crazy
  20. This Djokovich - Del Portro match is fantastic! Del Potro is the best to watch when healthy. They are both going for it right now
  21. Anderson BB *sirens*
  22. US 1 gold out of 1 1 gold possible so far. Madison Keys playing now for Tennis
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 5, 2016 -> 03:10 PM) Been thinking about this since I heard it on Hannity ... Media has gone after Trump's wife aggressively. How come Bill is off limits? Why aren't we hearing story after story about his mistresses and getting their stories? Also stories on how Hillary's marriage partner was a predator. Monica may have been over 21 but she was a fricking intern. That's predatorish behavior by Bill. If Trump's family is under fire, the media at least could aggressively pursue the Bill is a womanizer theme. There's no way after Monica he became Mr. Faithful. Doesn't work that way. How bout uncovering some mistresses, etc., and interviewing them. Hillary got off on Benghazi. No hard questions. She got off on the email thing. No hard questions. All she gets is love from the media. There were roughly 400 hearings including a 12-hour hearing of her testimony from her. Did Hannity not cover that? Must be media bias. Also "media has been aggressively covering Melania" no they haven't. When the democrats hold a special committee to deport her than it will be equal to anything ever involving the clintons. Congrats on another post greg.
  24. Yeah that whole intern fiasco was really swept under the rug.
  25. God what journalist wrote that in the first place. That's revolting.
