Yeah, I agree. I'm probably still going to see it though. But man, they may as well have just said this was a remake, because the scenes were hilariously similar.

Vaccinations
QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 01:18 PM) However, if the disease was pretty much eradicated in the US it had to come from somewhere, not saying it had t be undocumented people but that is more likely. I've already posted the immunization rates for measles from prominent immigration flowing countries of central america/mexico. They are in the high nineties. This is the 21st century guys, millions from all over are going to pass through the United States.

Vaccinations
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 01:19 PM) So IL's exemptions are medical necessity (which I think we're all OK with), or religious. To me, any objection based on religion or philosophy just doesn't fly when you choose to endanger the public health. The shame is the people with a medical necessity and cannot be immunized are no longer protected by the herd

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 01:03 PM) I hate you. I agree with you. Pitch Perfect was also one of the great HBO movies where I may have seen about 30 times because it was always on and I'd always watch it.

Vaccinations
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 12:56 PM) Here's the policy from the elementary school my older kids is at: Physical Examination & Immunizations: Required before Kindergarten or upon first entry into an Illinois school, and upon entering 6th and 9th grades. The physical exam must be completed within one year prior to the first day of school and should be filed with the school nurse by July 30th. Required immunizations include diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles, rubella, mumps, hepatitis B and varicella. That's the part where I am unclear. They must have some allowance for waivers, because some kids do have real maladies that make SOME vaccinations dangerous. But I don't know what the waiver policy is. I'm tempted to email the school and ask. I agree, this must be where the issues lie. I also remember getting sent home for a half day because we missed the third shot of something in High School. So there must be waivers being granted.

Vaccinations
Yeah, in fact the worst part about this is that it's mutated from the autism link to straight up efficacy of vaccines and anecdotal claims you can stay healthy without them by leading an organic lifestyle. It's...rich.

Vaccinations
I'm hoping that public shame works, because logically these people are on conspiracy level where any small detail is revelatory and overwhelming research is flawed because of "big pharm" who make tons of money on vaccines!

Apartment/Condo/House Thread
Well, the house we are buying is great because the updates are so obvious in how to add a 1st floor bath, etc. But definitely want to re-tyle the upstairs bath. I feel pretty good about tiling, but still unsure if I'll do the shower. The thing is a massive beast, where the wall of the shower and tub are all connected. I may just do the demo to save that cash. You are right, definitely do not want leaks.

Vaccinations
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 10:45 AM) I don't fall into that camp. I think people who don't vaccinate are abusing their children. However, I also have a hard time punishing the children, which is what happens when doctors stop admitting them as patients and they can't go to school. That said, I don't want my kids going to a school where half the kids are vaccinated (I'm making an extreme example here, however, there are certain schools where I live where they are pretty close to this level). Damn yuppies. But that's not an extreme example! In that NYT article there are schools in California with about that ratio of unvaccinated. And I understand "punishing the kids", but it's not like they just can't get a vaccine for the rest of their lives.

Super Bowl Halftime and Commercials
With so many commercials trying to capitalize by creating an emotional resonance with the company now, it was bound to hit a tipping point. It was almost a relief when the super glue commercial was actually putting their product front and center.

2014-2015 NFL Football thread
The nationwide commercial provided so many funny memes that I'm not even mad. And the stuff about "all publicity is good publicity", no, having worked at a company that had backlash to their superbowl ads, it puts a lot of pressure on leadership to answer questions and justify why they spent so much on an ad that created negative publicity. Hell, that ad wasn't even selling a product, it was "creating awareness about child safety". It amazes me this stuff gets out without red flags.

Vaccinations
QUOTE (raBBit @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 09:42 AM) Jenny McCarthy had an autistic son and instead of embracing his condition she claims it happened because of a vaccine and went on a media campaign to make people not vaccinate. I have to say though, I had no idea how big this "movement" had become. 10% of the population is 33 million people. That's insane.

I think if you make a pass call there, a fade to chris matthews makes more sense. There's a reason fades are popular goal line calls, they aren't crazy successful but very rarely do they get a turnover. But a slant over the middle when it's so crowded just is that dangerous.

Vaccinations
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 09:24 AM) It seems to cut across the political spectrum. You've got everything from anti-gmo, everything-organic holistic herbal remedies in tune with nature Whole Foods crowd to the "f*** you, I got mine, I don't owe society nothin'" types to the "fluoridation is a communist plot!" Birch conspiracy theory types. Plus a lot of generally apolitical and otherwise well-meaning people who have been duped by frauds into believing vaccines cause autism etc. It's quite remarkable the circular logic. I do think the "vaccination deaths" are a huge part of some well-meaning parents who decided not to (And hopefully now are). But another, almost hysterical pushback, is the claim I've seen that the measles aren't that big of a deal (nor is whooping cough) and this is all CDC hype. So in other words, a negligible amount of chemicals applied once to your child is the end of the world, but MEASLES is not a big deal.

Vaccinations
I don't think it's libertarians particularly, but there is something alarming about the complete absence of societal responsibility. When you won't even perform an act that will not only prevent sickness in yourself, but the most vulnerable, then there is a deep schizm right now that will be hard to repair.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Feb 1, 2015 -> 10:34 PM) Yeah, McNair brought his team back from the dead. Much respect there. To me, that was the first great Super Bowl. Every previous one I saw was a blowout. Rams vs Patriots was good as was Patriots vs Panthers, Steelers vs Seahawks, Saints vs Colts, NY vs NE, SF vs Baltimore, and of course this year. These youngins don't know how bad super bowls used to be prior to 99. Pitt v AZ was my favorite super bowl
