  1. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 04:56 PM) No idea where it ranks compared to other cities but the murder rate is 9.4 per 100k people as of 2012. You are right, I read that wrong. http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Ferguson-Missouri.html 2 murders in 2012, 9.4 per 100k
  2. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 03:15 PM) Please. Let's ignore that certain neighborhoods are worse than others and need a different method of policing. For zero reason at all, you have jumped to the logic that this neighborhood is the equivalent of Englewood and that they should be met with military force. WHile it would even be debatable that protests in Englewood should be met with antimine vehicles, let's look at Ferguson: Ferguson is slightly above average to the national norm, and for city suburbs looks pretty normal. Averages 2 murders per 100,000 people per year in 2012, but total crime is slightly above national average. It's hard to get neighborhood year breakdowns, but by all accounts Ferguson is safer than my home of Logan Square. I know that I would be livid if met with this type of force. Englewood averages 2.6 violent crimes per 1,000 people per thirty days.
  3. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 02:59 PM) So you expect cops to go in basically unarmed to quell a protest/riot that turned to violence in an area where there could be guns (and not really "could be" in this case, because as I posted yesterday there was at least two shootings)? Well there "could be" guns anywhere in the united states. So your point is basically that our police should always arrive at any protest dressed as the military.
  4. Yeah I'm sure that's what they are thinking and why Mike Brown is dead in the first place. Thanks for illustrating that.
  5. I don't see why it matters either, that's why few people were discussing it. I will say, I am surprised sponsors for their teams don't put more pressure not to race in non-sponsored events.
  6. All said, very glad DGB is not on this team, especially after the swimmer case. I hope we hear charges filed soon on that front as well. SEC network launches tonight, wooo. Mizzou offense this year I don't know what will happen, but I think there may be some fun D players to watch: Josh Augusta, Charles Harris, Shane Ray/Golden (duh), and Kentrell Brothers. Most all of them Dlineman. Harris was a 0 star recruit they signed because they liked how he looked in basketball. Only played football for 2 years and is now our 2 deep DE as a RS Frosh. Some might be scared by that, but after following mizzou dline over last 10 years, I'm excited.
  7. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 08:09 AM) The police response tonight was horrendous. There should be some mass firings, starting with the police chief. You can't arrest reporters for doing nothing wrong. You can't throw teargas at a media crew. That's the media part of this. Also, you can't throw teargas in neighborhoods when the people aren't doing anything violent. What's more the cop who killed that kid has to be charged with murder and tried. It's just the way it is. You can't kill an unarmed person and not at least be tried for the crime. That cop should be charged soon. But will he be?? This is where I am. I really don't care that there was looting any more. By and large since then "rioting" is not the problem. Yesterday the police, looking like military, lined up around a a daytime peaceful protest with guns trained on the protestors. By all appearances they are declaring war on that community, and have lost all legitimacy. When that happens, horrible things are liable to keep coming up. The feds/state police/anyone need to take over. If you are nervous that the crowd unrest will turn into violence, use the same riot shield + baton that works in every other city. Batoning people obviously sucks but rubber bullets can kill people. You are also much less likely to shoot a baton at someone on their front lawn.
  8. For people that use anonymous as a news source, they should read through the Steubenville thread. They had maybe 95% of the details incorrect on that story.
  9. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 10:38 PM) Really? Just how common are they? Daily happenings? Weekly? Several times a year? I'd say police murdering innocent civilians several times a year is too common. How often does that happen in other comparable countries?
  10. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 10:31 PM) You're absolutely right these things shouldn't happen in 2014, but that's a far cry from claiming that America isn't for black people. I mean I forgot that all black people in this country are second class citizens. There are no politicians, business leaders, actors, actresses, professional sports athletes that are respected, idolized, cheered for, etc. in this country. None whatsoever. But hey, overreacting to these types of stories, making it a racial issue that white people have to feel defensive about is the best way to go about changing things. As is looting and rioting and behaving like uncivilized threats that cops use to justify their overreactions. Maybe instead of "Gah! White people hate black people!" (which isn't true), the story line here should be "Gah! Police have become militarized in this country and are out of control and we need to re-think that whole thing because people keep getting shot, punched, assaulted, etc. for no justifiable reason." That's great, doesn't really help the fact that police may have executed a black teen, which has become all too common. Maybe white people shouldn't feel defensive and instead listen to why they are so angry instead of telling them they can't be angry until some standard is met. Try to imagine if the tools that are supposed to keep society running were instead harassing and threatening and even killing your community. Look how pissed people get at bureaucracy in here, which is justified, now imagine the IRS killing your neighbors. Probably would be more vocal.
  11. The discussion on why he was racing in the first place was like, the smallest part of this entire thread.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 07:55 PM) It simply cannot possibly be more disappointing than it was last year. Why not try again. I had fun last year.

    2014 TV thread

That said, the last season I thought was my favorite. The comedic highs that show is able to hit is pretty amazing.

QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) I've been renting and watching BBC's Sherlock (I'm just one episode into season 2). I like it, but only 3 episodes a season is a sad disappointment. Yeah, but they are each mini-movies at 1.5 hrs long. I'm usually pretty exhausted after one.
  15. Christmas Day at UC vs. Lakers. That could be fun.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 12:38 PM) He couldn't turn, it's impossible to turn on a dirt track without skidding out of control and injuring or killing more bystanders than a Final Destination movie. Or so they say. Yes that's what's being said Caulfield.
  17. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 06:58 PM) Its probably a small leak in the roof as the mold is in the ceiling drywall and only in two spots. I called a mold remediation guy and it seems kind of pricey for a garage. You may want to try multiple estimates here, mold is big money nowadays. I'd be more worried about the water damage getting worse after a bad fall/winter/spring.
  18. Eh, yeah. Even when you go look at 2002 which was baad, you can rationalize the few solid players. This looks better than that but that bad reaaally was bad there. I don't even see many of those staying in the league much past this year.
  19. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 08:43 PM) I've never said they can't complain. They have every right to be upset. I'll all for them being upset. All i'm asking is why don't they respond similarly to other dead kids who die from unnecessary violence. It just seems like there's more of an uproar when there's a cop/non-black person involved. Also, I read an AP story that the gun went off inside the police car. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/guide-devel...police-shooting Obviously not much is known yet about what actually happened, but if that's true, that probably supports the cops story that there was a fight first and the kid then fled. Still gotta wonder if shooting was an appropriate response though. Probably not, if he was a person many states wouldn't consider that self defense due to the kid fleeing. It's likely that there was some portion where the officer is trying to put brown into the car and brown escapes. Perhaps cop fell into car in that scenario and shot from there. Some people said he tried grabbing this kid while still in the car, so it's going to be hard to know unless video exists. Just a situation that quite clearly escalated to a point it should not have.
  20. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 06:56 PM) you were fooling yourself if you actually believed that the NBA would allow the Clippers to leave LA. Red headed stepchild of LA or not, they are in LA, the NBA loves that. I think eventually Seattle gets a franchise back, by expansion or moving. I didn't think Clippers were moving, but for past 5 years Ballmer has been the potential owner to bring back team to seattle. Now he's tied to a team in LA and got the team by agreeing to stay.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 06:32 PM) The post might have been absurd, but the meaning is there. The black community would benefit way more from solving black on black crime, versus police brutality. The numbers aren't even close. If this much "effort" was put into that, way more young black lives would be saved. If police brutality (which is more than murder cases) were removed, community trust in police would probably help solve the crime rates. But, again, if police brutality is wrong, than people can object to it. I think we all agree police brutality is wrong... but sorry, St. Louis, you can't complain about police brutality and murdering of people until these people who are black in Detroit and Chicago solve their violence problem. Why? Because, they too are black, and so you are also black, and must answer for the violence of the predominantly black neighborhoods. You can't have the dessert of protesting police brutality until you eat your vegetables of solving crime. Want help? Just ask the police? Oh they are harassing you? Perhaps you should solve your communities crime!
  22. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 07:07 PM) I don't live in those areas. I've never been shot at. I've never lost a family member or friend to that kind of violence. I'm in a completely different world from them. So in a sense, you're right, I shouldn't judge them. But it's also not really "my" problem to solve. Okay, so...why bring it up in this thread? Have their been sympathy riots in Detroit and Chicago over this?
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 05:27 PM) Black mold in the ceiling of my detached garage. Big deal or no? Kinda depends how the moisture got in there. Moisture has a lot more ways to enter a garage than a house, if it's just from normal usage, you can probably just clean it down with bleach. If it is coming in from outside leak, you probably need to address that.
  24. I kind of hate that Seattle's best chance is over.
