QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 16, 2014 -> 07:37 PM) Boyhood is definitely one of the five best films of the year. Not sure when I would want to see it again (maybe never), but thoroughly enjoyable for a 2 hour 46 minute movie. Heh, yes I feel the same. I was also glad I went to see it in theatre to remove myself from distractions.
  2. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 17, 2014 -> 09:13 PM) Dude is near 30 on 200000000 nba minutes so far. At some point the HGH he injected in high school will wear off and the Kobe Doctors will be knocking. Point is Davis' basketball intangibles were off the chart. His effort to keep balls alive, to block shots toward his teammates were crazy. If he can stay healthy he's at least a KG level player.
  3. Holy crap. One year after rupturing his left patellar tendon, Atlanta OT Sam Baker ruptures his right patellar tendon. I can't imagine how painful that is.
  4. Went to game. It was a lot of fun, will write more. KD leaving makes the team dynamic a bit awkward, but fairly certain this team will not lose as long as Anthony Davis is there. He will be best basketball player in the world, if not this year than next. He is incredible. I am checking the bulls schedule now for if we get Nola at home.
  5. I feel like Williams returning kicks is almost a certainty at this point.
  6. Yeah thought that was coming after the crap game from bellamy and weems
  7. Ugh...guess Marion is officially out. Did we even call him? Make sure he goes to the Cavs, bulls. Ugh.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 16, 2014 -> 03:11 AM) The religion of outrage. This is probably more aptly applied to the poster you quoted.
  9. QUOTE (balfanman @ Aug 16, 2014 -> 03:43 AM) IMHO, that's not what he's saying at all. He did not say that women "athletes" were afraid of contact etc., he's saying that women in general are not as tough as men....generally. Female athletes are a very small percentage of the overall female population. I'm in my mid 50's and probably 98% of the women I know would have nothing to do with a collision. I find absolutely nothing wrong with what Hawk said and in my opinion the P. C. people are way over the line here, as they are on most issues. Good God of course that's not what he said but for some unknown reason a poster put a comment that a man's baseball team would beat a women's baseball team. Perhaps they felt that was productive. And if you don't think what hawk said was wrong you should go to your niece or daughter or nearby young girl, show her the clip and explain to her why it's not wrong.
  10. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 09:24 PM) IMHO, if you were to put a women's team in almost any sport up against an equivalent men's team (i.e. women's college basketball vs men's college basketball or women's fast-pitch softball vs men's fast-pitch softball), the guys are going to win more than 90% of the time. That’s not to take anything away from female athletes. It’s just simple fact that males are typically bigger, faster and stronger. Fine but Hawk's criticism isn't that women aren't the equivalent athletes to men in baseball he's saying women would be scared of contact and aren't tough, dainty, not meant to get dirty, etc.

eh, you know what I mean.
  12. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 08:28 PM) Yeah but in the grand scheme what % are we talking about? 1%? 5%? 10%? To SS2k5's point, the problem is you (and certain communities) seem to either think, believe or convey in your arguments that that number is much closer to 80-90%. That we should assume the police are always in the wrong more than in the right. What point would be your critical mass? If you were a business owner and 10% of your employees were doing illegal s*** to their customers that would be a gigantic deal.
  13. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 08:19 PM) Mainly because there was a female cop. I find it hard to believe she'd be in on it and ok with it. But again, it's possible. I just bet there's more to the story. The desire to protect your own in a job as stressful as police officer is apparently quite strong.
  14. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 08:14 PM) That's terrible if true. But I have a difficult time believing cops would just randomly start beating someone. I'd be willing to bet he resisted, hence the need for more than one officer. I wish some of you guys interned or job shadowed at a criminal courthouse. You're all wide-eyed optimists, and the degree to which people lie is astounding and would shock you. I'm not at all saying that's what happened in this case or the Brown case, but you all seem to discount the possibility. I covered the courthouse daily in college. I'm not surprised at all. There are many people that do claim police were over the top (especially whiney rich college kids who tried to break into bars), but my emphasis is there is a higher standard for police than for a citizen or criminal. Because you are dealing with bad people does not mean you are allowed to sink to that level. A kid who steals cigars is probably a self-entitled punk, he also deserves the chance to grow up after he is punished. edit: typo
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 08:12 PM) According to witnesses, he was shot as he was running away. He then turned around and put his hands in the air before being shot several more times. This should not have had to have been repeated so many times.
  16. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 08:09 PM) Also, I don't think you are surrendering when you're running away. Good God. Please read anything in this same thread that clarifies the very simple points being made. This does not require repeating over and over.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 07:15 PM) Which is exactly what we are being asked to do for part of the story. Ironic isn't it? As has been stated multiple times in this thread, it is almost certain this kid was resisting arrest, which is obviously wrong, but the penalty is not death. And as we saw in Times Square shooting by policeman, the standards for shooting after a fleeing, unarmed suspect should be very high. Two things that can be true: - Mike Brown should have been arrested that day - Mike Brown should not have been shot dead by an arresting officer
  18. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 07:33 PM) I agree that is likely the case, but I will wait for the forensics to confirm before declaring that I believe charges should be filed. Police said on Sunday they wouldn't release autopsy info (except they might release toxicology reports, surprise), so I'm not sure we'll know this answer unless charges are filed against policeman.
  19. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 07:45 PM) which is it? he was shot in the back running or shot in the chest while his hands were in the air surrendering? According to witnesses, both. He was shot running, and turned around with his hands up. He was shot multiple times.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 06:12 PM) So does preaching hate for the police. You are pretty well seeing the results of it. Yes, people were outraged, not because in the middle of the day people saw a police officer shoot a kid dead with his hands raised, it was because of people "preaching police hate" for no reason!
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 05:25 PM) It works exactly like that, and it creates situations exactly like this. Hate and fear is a two way street, and has real world consequences. You can't stoke hate and fear on one sides, and not expect it to have results and externalities. Well, unfortunately, police brutality in communities has real world consequences, and those consequences were not reaped from those asking to end it. It's from those who perform it, and from those who do not punish it. Most politicians are not corrupt, but it doesn't mean that a minority of them engaging in corruption is not an issue. It is, and it erodes public trust. That isn't the media/or watchdogs fault. It is the fault of the politicians if they do not try to self regulate.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 05:16 PM) So the idea is that it is OK for the stereotype of an entire group to take place because of the actions of a few in this situation? Sorry, but your efforts to try and equate "black people" with the "race" of police officers will not be entertained. Much like a bad customer service rep can do more negative harm to a company than 100 good cs reps, such is life for police. "Well, you can't paint all of comcast customer service in a bad light!" It doesn't work like that.
  23. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 05:12 PM) Right now we have the cops saying that he strong armed the convenient store(which looks to be true), assaulted a cop and tried to steal his gun. And we have Brown's friends saying that he surrendered right away. My point is that we still don't have all the details but a lot of people seem to just want to join the "f*** the police" side of things. Michael Brown doesn't have to be a saint for there still to have been gross incompetence. Officers should not be killing unarmed suspects, but even then after that, the response from the police this week has been a joke, and worthy of all the criticism they received. Unremarkably, a de-escalation did not lead to chaos taking over, but receding.
