QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 10:05 PM) This is hilarious considering your stereotyping of white people. Show me where?

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 08:57 PM) Honestly? Do you think all foods that have animal fats in them are bad? Do you realize that animal fats actually help you digest your food more easily, Mr Know-it-all? And how did our ancestors EVER MANAGE to stay healthy without knowing the caloric values of EVERYTHING they ate? How did they know when to stop eating? How did they not explode because they ate too much of that goat they slaughtered? GMAFB, Mr. Smarty pants...if EVER there was a person on soxtalk who was self-righteous, it was you. They weren't healthy. They starved. Oh, sorry, I shouldn't correct you for fear of being condescending. Why don't you tell me some large generalizations about how poor people are stupid and lazy, please. I wouldn't mean to offend you.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 08:39 PM) Government made meals for everyone!!! I love in a thread where people are confused that cheese is fattening and they don't need to count calories, they have the self will to moderate, are the same people saying everyone elses choices are so dumb! And that was my answer to all of this! Government meals! pat yourself on the back russ! Is there going to be a nice soxtalk meetup soon where we can all b**** about how we can't grab our secretaries asses, reverse-racism and how stupid and lazy poor people are? let me know!

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 08:40 PM) They could certainly stop being stupid, show me where fast food for every meal is cheaper than shopping at the grocery? Show me these statistics, please. You tell those poor people You tell em! You should fix on down to those poor people and fix em straight!

So, the answer to solving the obesity epidemic is shouting at poor people to stop being stupid and decide to stop being poor. Can someone draft this up so I can send it to Congress?
-
self-righteousness, thy name is soxtalk.

Sorry I meant to say that cheese is high in calories and unless you are eating a cheese platter it's a relatively easy thing to minimize. Remove it from your burgers and burritos and that adds up over the years.

I don't understand why you all are so stupid and fat.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 07:53 PM) That's 0% on Brian Kelly. Flaws in the ND police procedures? Maybe. No charges filed though, so it would be a terrible precedent for a coach to suspend/boot a player when no charges are filed and the school took no administrative action. Mizzou suspended and eventually removed Mike Dixon from the basketball team for two rape accusations where no charges were filed. And I'm very glad they did that. -
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 06:54 PM) Frozen chicken breasts yes, the ones in the refrigerated meat section are like 2.89/lb. Check out the mindgrapes on this guy.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 06:47 PM) Five years ago, they didn't have salads at all. A quick salad when on the road or running out to grab something for lunch at the office wasn't an offered choice. This is untrue, mcdonalds has had salads since I was a child. They had a hardboiled egg in them. I remember them fondly.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 06:44 PM) You made the claim, you prove it. And tacos aren't exactly "healthy food." I can make you a healthy salad for less then 2 bucks (not that taco bell would be less than 2 bucks once you account for the food and travel). But yes, this is a dumb argument. At the end of the day in 99% of cases making your own food and having left overs is going to be cheaper than getting something pre-made or going out to eat. People choose to be lazy and spend more. I'm fine with that choice as well. It's 'merica dammit. I have a hard time believing anyone could prove going out will be cheaper than making your own fresh food short of someone taking value menu vs. canned goods.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 05:29 PM) I've read that sociopath and psychopath are pretty interchangeable terms. They are, one is just outmoded. Sociopath is not actually used anymore.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 06:29 PM) Heck all fast food places have salads now a days. With cheese and fried chicken, the best kind of salads for health.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 05:25 PM) It wasn't doubt that they exist but on what the impacts were. Time for google. In my completely anecdotal proof! When I lived in roscoe village I could take the bus 1 mile west to western ave to Jewel, or go to the corner store for another day. I sadly made that corner store trip too often. You get home from work, you don't want to do a 2 hour round trip.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 05:22 PM) There was a thought about "food deserts" in the US, urban areas that essentially have no grocery store and no access to fresh foods, but IIRC some research a year or two ago cast some doubt on that idea. There's a "time to prepare a meal" aspect, too. Making processed foods or picking up fast foods is quick and easy. Making a big meal from scratch, a little more difficult and requires more resources. I have a hard time believing it isn't true. South side sees far fewer grocery stores, and a lot more corner markets. They have some onions, tomatoes, eggs, etc. So they have "fressh food", but not quite equal.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 05:06 PM) Yeah, I don't own a scale...I don't care what I weigh..I gauge my health by how I feel, how I look, and how easy or hard my workouts are. For instance, this morning, I did a pretty intense plyo workout...usually this workout is somewhat stressful for me but not too bad if I am in good shape...but this morning, it was very difficult for me...I struggled to lower my heart rate and keep my breathing under control at times. This was a clear indicator that I have been slacking and need to lay off the pizza a bit and get more workouts in during the week. Americans are so obsessed with weight. It isn't about weight, folks. It's about eating healthy and exercising semi-regularly and being generally active. But that doesn't sell. What sells is results, and tangible results are weight loss. It's unfortunate, but true. As for your last point, I think it is all of the above. I have all the health care access I need, but I cannot tell you the last time I used it, other than to pick up a z-pack or something when I had a cold. Additionally, the stress does add quite a bit, like you mentioned, and there are probably larger instances of smoking and drinking habitually among those at lower income levels. But I do think it is a combination of everything. While a lot of this is true, weight does matter at some point. And it doesn't come down to working out, people need to count how much they are putting into their bodies. And by and large, when people do this they tend to make healthy choices. But to be healthy, cut down on red meat and meat in general per week. Cut down on cheese. Cut down on butter in prep. At that point you are doing good despite size.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 04:25 PM) Wow, I don't realize that Silver Linings Playbook was so highly acclaimed. It's amusing that they announce the nominees at 5 AM local time in LA. I haven't seen it, but I've loved every David O Russel movie. I'm sure it's probably pretty good even if it's his weakest.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 04:41 PM) The good thing is that more and more folks are taking an interest in what they eat and how much they exercise, although, the graph you posted earlier makes it clear this is something that is split by class, which is understandable, since more healthy foods do tend to cost more (sometimes significantly more) than less healthy foods. I agree, progress is usually slow but there has been a clear shift to the attention of what we put in our bodies the past decade. The requirement of calorie counts at restaurant I am very pleased by. It's a huge help to me when I was slimming down for the wedding, and really helps you decide whether the marginal benefit of some cheese or sour cream would be worth the 120 calorie increase.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 02:01 PM) The current generation of children are the first in like 200 years that aren't expected to live longer than their parents. Kids are fat and eating processed foods and sugars and meats at a higher rate than ever before, with less exercise than ever before, because Facebook and video games and chat rooms. Lazy ass kids with dumbass parents. Predictions like that are usually pretty terrible.

Pretty sure the music video killed the music video. But anyway, I'm willing to deal with all that bulls*** from ESPN so long as they keep putting out their apps. I'd be very sad without the watch ESPN app. Also, college gameday is the best on saturday mornings. But really espn is just modeling after fox news. They'll have their opinion anchors say outrageous things and then cover those outrageous things as a news story to cover where "some people are wondering whether Tebow will be the greatest QB ever, or greatestest, over to you john"

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 10:56 PM) Being "down the middle" isn't necessarily what makes Politico terrible, though faux DC media centrism is a problem. It's their obliviousness to how policy affects real people, and all that really matters is gamesmanship and optics.

good lord. You like Politico?

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 08:04 PM) Watch this scenario happen next year: Sonics have #1 pick. Opening night: Thunder at Sonics Kemp, Payton get their #s retired in addition to all the old Sonics retired numbers. Doesn't seem like a great year to have a #1 pick, albeit it's early.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 07:53 PM) How so? Drudge used to own beltway media stories. The past two elections he hasn't pushed anything into national conversation. Last thing was...that one school bus beating? The only one who pays attention is politico.
