Official 2012-2013 NCAA Football Thread
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 10:07 PM) In general. I just would not have imagined that the next Wisconsin coach would come from a team that is technically rated higher than Wisconsin right now. I figured they would either get a guy from the Pros or a coach on a team that has been meandering. Really? I can see an illinois fan thinking this, but Wisconsin?

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 05:57 PM) Its hard to believe Wisconsin hired a coach of a team that is ranked in the top 25. Are you saying this just because they had to hire so late in a tough year to hire coaches? Or in general?

Fiscal Cliff Discussion
QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 09:26 PM) in this situation he has ALL the leverage in the world. there's pretty much no way for him to lose/look bad UNLESS he caves for no reason. Or he wants to put this away to focus on a new legislation (gun control/safety and immigration). There's really no reason to be worried about the deficit right now, unless you are in DC which for some reason is obsessed with it.

Financial News
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 04:30 PM) More on the LIBOR Scandal, UBS edition The latter point is key: UBS didn’t just manipulate its own submissions, but actively attempted to manipulate other firms’ submissions as well. And at points the bribery was so explicit as to beggar belief that anybody would ever communicate such things on the record: it would be nice to see some of these criminals go to jail THEY"LL NEVER GO TO JAIL BECAUSE THE CIA HAS THEIR KIDS COMMITTING MURDER TO DISTRACT PEOPLE FROM TEH STAND

How or Why did you become a Democrat?
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 05:09 PM) Kinda like immigration, which has now shifted so far to the left anything but blanket amnesty is "you hate brown people!" This is grossly inaccurate.

How or Why did you become a Democrat?
I agree. I think the polarization of the parties is not a bad thing. Centrist candidates have largely proven to be more corrupt and absolutely more pork-oriented. That said, I'm a democrat, no qualms about saying this. I disagree with them on a few of their economic items recently, but prefer to pressure members in the party rather than not vote for them, let the opponent win, and lose any progress I might have gained for my preferred policy preferences. I am a democrat on the national level, and forced to be on a local level often just because their bizarre social policies they'll enforce. I don't think the national ideologies make sense on a local level, and we end up just seeing a one party system that becomes very corrupt and enforces policies against interest of greater good. I'm a big supporter of what SS said. It annoyed me NSS's "neither party" thread "where people should be". It's largely patting yourself on the back for no reason.

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 03:28 PM) Kodak just sold it's patent portfolio to Apple and Google (together who paid 525M for it). Wouldn't it be great, if instead of that money going to a bankrupt company's lawyers, that money was spent developing new products that benefit future consumers? No? Oh, right, our IP system is working wonderfully.

I guarantee it was written improperly, and that's probably a good thing. They probably gave this to their lawyers asking for what they wanted to accomplish (sponsored links, ads for instagram, etc), and the lawyers put in language that broadly gave this powers. But they probably did not consider how this read to regular customers. I think by and large these TOS freakouts are good for consumers, it brings awareness on customers to read TOS and pressure companies, and it will likely lead to companies writing simpler TOS or blog analysis of their TOS so people can understand.

How much money could someone honestly make selling instagram photos to ad companies. That sounds like the dumbest business model i've ever heard.

2012-2013 NBA thread
Which is weird because this has been a fascinating NBA season so far. The bulls haven't been, but I've really enjoyed everything else. The resurgence of a genuinely fun to watch knicks team, memphis playing aces, the struggles of the lakers and I've enjoyed the Rockets too.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 09:56 PM) I think the guy wants to get paid and get laid. And if that is true, then he stays in the NFL for the next decade as a backup QB. Annnnd, I just realized you were talking about Tebow while I was talking about the Sanchize. The Jaguars will come calling for Tebow. I just don't get how the Jags haven't pulled the trigger if they really want him.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 12:05 AM) I think there will always be these types of massacres and there's nothing you can do to prevent them. So, to some extent my answer is yes. You take away guns, these crazies will just find another means of achieving their goal. I still think it's bulls*** to label my desire for protection in a life or death moment a "gun hero," but whatever. And yet america leads the world in them.

So this for me, is episode 400 of internet freakout over original "cool startup" trying to monetize itself in the face of it's childish and conspiracy-theoried users. It's amusing. For one, they are basically getting the right to advertise themselves, and do the same promoted crap that facebook does. But what does everyone assume? That instagram is going to make money by selling off their pictures of s***ty spaghetti they made to advertising companies and magazines. It's a wonderful mix of narcissism and stupidity.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 09:40 PM) Jesus christ I can't believe anyone is seriously considering "Arm the Teachers!" as a real, viable, good policy. What is wrong with this country. What's the countdown on a child stealing a gun and committing suicide? 1 year? 2 years?

2012-2013 NCAA Basketball thread
QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 08:36 PM) Yes, like Illinois did to the inferior talent on Butler and Gonzaga....away from Champaign. My post had nothing to do with with Illinois, but I'm glad to know this hyper-sensitivity ingrained in all U of I students and the people I know were not a crazy exception. For all U of I students, just insert this into every post of mine so I don't have to deal with it: Espn IS out to get you! Only U of I students can critique U of I basketball, the rest are just speaking out of an ACC bias! Everyone is out to get us.

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 08:01 PM) Actually, while I'm not a lawyer, that doesn't sound quite right. If that were the case, Instagram has just created a situation where they can use pictures of people and then put the onus on the person that took the picture... Example: 1) I take a picture of Tom Cruise drinking a Starbucks, I post it on Instagram. 2) Instagram takes the photo of Tom Cruise drinking Starbucks and sells it for advertising. 3) Tom Cruise sues ME? That doesn't sound right. Sounds like in such a case, Instagram is using the likeness of someone else and saying they can simply because a random person took a picture of them and put it on Instagram via attempting to hide behind a weakly written TOS that most people haven't read. I think I have every right to post a picture of Tom Cruise on instagram drinking a cup of coffee...if instagram used it, they'd be at fault, not me. Tom Cruise doesn't have a right to sue if he's drinking coffee at a starbucks.

Connecticut school shooting
QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 08:00 PM) True, but I think they are contenders for the worst hate group. They do some pretty hateful things. One of my favorite stories of all time is how the Texas A&M students formed a human wall around them to protect a funeral. I think they are hurting a lot of people by the way. A lot of people want to celebrate their loved ones lives at funerals of their loved ones, not deal with some f***s from Topeka screaming, "God hates XXXs." Well, neonazi and klu klux klan groups have actually killed people, so I think we can put them below this group.

2012 TV Thread
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 08:40 PM) Brody even said he parked his car in Lot C. They simply took it from Lot C, and drove it up to the front of the building. That's what I'm saying, they must have video of someone breaking in to Brody's car in Lot C, and the parking it in front of the ceremony and then getting out. I totally get what your saying, but that wouldn't mean Brody wasn't part of the plot in the eyes of the CIA or Saul. Because he would have been the reason a car with explosives entered the parking lot in the first place. We have no idea that he didn't put explosives there.

Connecticut school shooting
QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 08:41 PM) They are the scum of the earth, but I think the reason nobody ever beats the hell out of them at funerals is a.) they are lawyers and are dying to sue people and b.) if you actually look at them or talk to them you realize they are not worth your fists. They just say the same things over and over and they just seem like trash if that's the right word. It's not worth the effort to punch them and I think people see that when they approach them. and maybe, just maybe, that it's better to rise above then to use violence against people. Maybe?

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
While you are all going down semantics hell, I think I should nudge people to the idea that it's still ridiculous that a gunman couldn't go on a spree in texas, and when shown one, arguing that that isn't texas. Arizona is very liberal with gun laws, yet saw a spree there with people with CCW. Many were still injured and killed.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 07:31 PM) What do you mean it would be his clearance that got the car there? And when Brody and Carrie were at the ceremony, wasn't it Carrie who signaled to him that they should leave and go talk? It seemed as if Brody was going to stay for the whole event until Carrie signaled for him. That's another reason why I don't think Brody was behind this. Whoever did it may have been hoping to take out Brody in the attack as well. I don't think it was Brody either. But I'm saying even if they had video of someone else moving the car, they would have still needed Brody's car to get it in the parking lot to begin with. I'm guessing the CIA parking lot isn't exactly a mall open lot.

2012-2013 NCAA Basketball thread
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 07:08 PM) Conference play hasnt even started. RANKINGS DONT MATTER. this is correct. The only important part of Nov. Dec. is getting a feel for teammates, and making ridiculous dunks on inferior talent. If you don't do either of those things, your team probably sucks.
