QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 08:37 PM) If Jay Cutler was capable of winning a game for a team I would like the Bears chances. I personally think Jay Cutler is glorified more than he should be because the history of the QB position for the Bears is so bad. LOL. Bears fans, ladies and gentleman.

Connecticut school shooting
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 09:14 PM) I'd be more than happy to consider this as well...but the data I've seen on this is inconclusive at best. Here's a 2010 study: Now, the caveat on this of course is that this is a single incident...you're not testing the sociological impact of people playing them for years...but at least in that study, the video games werent' an immediate trigger. At best we currently can say we have an anecdotal connection where some shooters also play video games or go to violent movies..but given how widespread "Violent movies and video games" are in our society it's a hard one to look at. The Batman shooter, for example...focused on a fairly violent set of movies, but is the answer to that to ban that kind of violence from movies? Maybe it is, but you have to show me that it would have a decent chance of being effective. I'm not interested in this type of regulation. I do think our country needs some introspection on our fetishism of violence. I'm not convinced that large amounts of the country aren't entertained by these incidents, and eat them up like it's reading about a battle. In all of our popular shows, csi, ets, it's a detective chasing after a bad person that murders. We always get to see the bad persons motive. They get humanized, meanwhile a nameless person gets killed in the beginning as the appetizer. But there's a lot in there. There's a lot in our bizarre sense of righteous violence. And there's a lot that American men need to confront in themselves.

The Future of America
Chicago schools lag behind the improvements seen in other big cities. BUt they still have been improving (as has the country as a whole). And there are some very good public schools in Chicago.

The Future of America
We live in one of the safest times in world history. We have no worries of polio, scarlett fever, etc. Though the western world has had a poor decade, it has been prosperous in poverty-stricken regions. 150 years ago, half your children would die because illness, and your wife would be risking her life each time. There's no question. As for duke, he claimed that Bush was a great president because he kept the country safe. A bar so low, that greatness was achieved by nearly every president (except Bush, who technically didn't).

QUOTE (farmteam @ Dec 16, 2012 -> 09:33 PM) Really depends where you are. If you're in the New Trier district, you're an idiot not to use the public system. But for probably >95% of districts, it's definitely a decision that requires a lot of serious thought. 95%? LOL

QUOTE (farmteam @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 03:00 AM) I thought in real time it looked bad because at least 2 of the PIs Jeffery had his arms out so it looked like he was pushing off, even if on replay you could see it was nothing. I thought the end zone call sucked thought because it was within five yards. Does anyone know if the five yard rule does not extend past goal line?

Connecticut school shooting
QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 07:36 PM) I think there is much to be gained by forcing discourse on this stuff. Finding more out about the killers and exposing people to the violence is a catalyst for change. How many people will think about their troubled friend/child/co-worker and possibly help them because of this? Don't forget about that when you jump straight to the "others will replicate this crime!" conclusion because it is only part of it. That sounds very theoretical. We've had numerous sociologists and psychologists talk about the media triggers that cause copy-cats. The obsession with the killer is one of the main drivers. We blast the face everywhere like a celebrity. There is nothing special about this person. He is 20 years old, probably has schizophrenia. He snapped and got a gun and killed children. Let's stop being obssessed by this violence.

if we wanted to stop this s***, one of the things is to stop releasing names and pictures of the guy (always f***ing men) who did this, so other mental cases stop thinking this is a way to notoriety. Learn from your mistakes, America.

Connecticut school shooting
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 06:41 PM) Wow, nothing other than mental illness can draw a line from that to shooting an entire classroom full of kids. Right, search for motive in this will not bare any fruit.

this is traumatizing 1000 miles away. I can't imagine how those involved move on. I hope they can find meaning in the rest of their lives, and those lives lost I hope they find peace in death.

Was disappointed Chaney went with Bielema, but I'm open to promoting Andy Hill to OC. I do think this year was mostly done in by injuries, but a disaster due to some poor '10 class production. I think we'll be better.

2012-2013 NBA thread
QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Dec 13, 2012 -> 06:04 PM) For once, I agree with Balta. Dwight and Melo were moved because their contract was about to expire. Love has no leverage for a few more years. It's not going to make things any easier for him if his play suffers and teams start questioning his attitude either (though I don't get the impression that he's the kinda douche where that would happen). Was Deron on an expiring contract? Or was it 1.5 years left?

Financial News
As a whole, Bernanke has done a pretty good job. It was frustrating since so much of his academia was committed to dealing with a crisis very much like the US (his writing on Japan), and then not following the course suggestions he set in his paper. That said, we are such better hands than so many companies. I'm only jealous of Israels central bank, Swedens and Australias. Good work Chicago Fed Chief Charlie Evans as well.
