2012 TV Thread
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 04:17 PM) Homeland - I liked where it was going until they tried to make us believe Langley, the CIA headquarters, would somehow not have cameras on its parking lots, especially a camera of the front of the building. I mean, maybe that will come out Ep. 1 of next season to clear Brody's name in at least the moving of the car aspect of it, but I can't imagine they wouldn't have cameras to prove someone else took Brody's car and parked it there. Also, how the hell do they give Carrie a PROMOTION after all that? Yeah, he has great instinct, but she doesn't follow orders and is an emotional mess. Fully re-instate her, but don't give her a promotion, that's farfetched. I don't understand why you would think he'd still not be implicated considering it would have been his clearance that got the car there in the first place, and, you know, his prior dealings as a terrorist.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 08:12 PM) I still have a suspicion that he was involved. His meeting with Mike in the bar when he asked Mike to keep looking after his family because he couldn't. Brody and Carrie sneak out just in time. They went to the office where they could see the car parked where it was...I still don't know about that, there was something strange about that. I think they are doing this largely to reproduce doubt in Carrie's judgment, but ultimately I think they'll end up with Brody not having done it. I think they'd prefer that Carrie knew correctly he was fine now, but her choosing a regular life caused her to miss what Nazir was planning. She kept Brody killing the vice prez to herself, when she should have wondered why nazir wold do that and not want to publish it to the world.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 07:17 PM) And I believe Carrie was promoted by Saul since he mentioned something about Estes being pissed off about it. Considering she ended up capturing Nazr, it would make sense that she would get promoted, even if she was/is banging an American terrorist. Which brings me to my other complaint - how is she going to explain leaving for a day or two? The only person she'll have to explain this to is Saul, who will probably end up trusting Carrie.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 06:52 PM) Transitive property is for three teams. This is only two. In rankings, at any given time, there will be teams who were beaten by another team, that might end up ahead of them. They are comparing a whole field and the resumes of each team. Just beating someone doesn't guarantee that your resume is better, though it usually helps.

Or maybe we've found the transitive property to be unreliable.

The First Annual Steve9347 b**** about your Fantasy Teams here
despite my b****ing, I managed to make the championship game in my auction league pretty much due to Adrian Peterson, but the playoff push I'm accrediting to D McFadden getting solid 10-12 points. Huge boost for me.

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 06:45 PM) Dropped my Nexus 7 down a flight of uncarpeted stairs yesterday. The device was in two pieces on the floor. I walked down the stairs with a feeling of deep sadness. Picked up the two pieces, snapped them back together, and viola! The dang thing works flawlessly. Asus FTW! Because your device ended up fine, I feel okay pointing out that I find nothing funnier than seeing scenarios like that.

2012 Films Thread
interesting. I hated family guy but the positivity surrounding Ted made me think it was legitimately funny. It wouldn't surprise me, though it would have spawned with McFarlane, hollywood movies get touched by many different hands. But , I guess I'll skip it.

Technology catch-all thread
The tablets thread died. I was planning on getting the nexus 10, ended up getting an iPad. No regrets. Thinking about getting the NBA season pass now that I can watch that without taking up my fiancees HGTV time. It's a pretty good marriage tool (not that the nexus 10 couldn't have accomplished this).

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 11:28 PM) I swear that if WBC members showed up to a funeral of a family member of mine to protest it, whether it would be because one of those little kids were related to me or if God forbid one of my cousins in Iraq (two were serving there) were killed, they'd have to peel me away from them. These are some sick twisted f***s. Because that's what the people of the family need, to see more violence.

Time to revisit the 2nd Amendment?
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 10:49 PM) I'm not talking about that guy. I'm talking about the dude that's fall down drunk after 20 drinks, not 2. And routinely drinks and drives. These are the people that routinely kill people with their vehicles, to the point they've invented a term for it, vehicular manslaughter/homocide. Those people cause most drunk driving accidents/fatalities, to the tune of thousands upon thousands per year. And their regulations, fines, and sentences are often less than that of a person who uses a gun illegally. I'd love if car accidents entered the fray for more regulation.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 08:37 PM) If Jay Cutler was capable of winning a game for a team I would like the Bears chances. I personally think Jay Cutler is glorified more than he should be because the history of the QB position for the Bears is so bad. LOL. Bears fans, ladies and gentleman.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 09:14 PM) I'd be more than happy to consider this as well...but the data I've seen on this is inconclusive at best. Here's a 2010 study: Now, the caveat on this of course is that this is a single incident...you're not testing the sociological impact of people playing them for years...but at least in that study, the video games werent' an immediate trigger. At best we currently can say we have an anecdotal connection where some shooters also play video games or go to violent movies..but given how widespread "Violent movies and video games" are in our society it's a hard one to look at. The Batman shooter, for example...focused on a fairly violent set of movies, but is the answer to that to ban that kind of violence from movies? Maybe it is, but you have to show me that it would have a decent chance of being effective. I'm not interested in this type of regulation. I do think our country needs some introspection on our fetishism of violence. I'm not convinced that large amounts of the country aren't entertained by these incidents, and eat them up like it's reading about a battle. In all of our popular shows, csi, ets, it's a detective chasing after a bad person that murders. We always get to see the bad persons motive. They get humanized, meanwhile a nameless person gets killed in the beginning as the appetizer. But there's a lot in there. There's a lot in our bizarre sense of righteous violence. And there's a lot that American men need to confront in themselves.

The Future of America
Chicago schools lag behind the improvements seen in other big cities. BUt they still have been improving (as has the country as a whole). And there are some very good public schools in Chicago.

The Future of America
We live in one of the safest times in world history. We have no worries of polio, scarlett fever, etc. Though the western world has had a poor decade, it has been prosperous in poverty-stricken regions. 150 years ago, half your children would die because illness, and your wife would be risking her life each time. There's no question. As for duke, he claimed that Bush was a great president because he kept the country safe. A bar so low, that greatness was achieved by nearly every president (except Bush, who technically didn't).

QUOTE (farmteam @ Dec 16, 2012 -> 09:33 PM) Really depends where you are. If you're in the New Trier district, you're an idiot not to use the public system. But for probably >95% of districts, it's definitely a decision that requires a lot of serious thought. 95%? LOL

QUOTE (farmteam @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 03:00 AM) I thought in real time it looked bad because at least 2 of the PIs Jeffery had his arms out so it looked like he was pushing off, even if on replay you could see it was nothing. I thought the end zone call sucked thought because it was within five yards. Does anyone know if the five yard rule does not extend past goal line?

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 07:36 PM) I think there is much to be gained by forcing discourse on this stuff. Finding more out about the killers and exposing people to the violence is a catalyst for change. How many people will think about their troubled friend/child/co-worker and possibly help them because of this? Don't forget about that when you jump straight to the "others will replicate this crime!" conclusion because it is only part of it. That sounds very theoretical. We've had numerous sociologists and psychologists talk about the media triggers that cause copy-cats. The obsession with the killer is one of the main drivers. We blast the face everywhere like a celebrity. There is nothing special about this person. He is 20 years old, probably has schizophrenia. He snapped and got a gun and killed children. Let's stop being obssessed by this violence.
