QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 07:22 PM) And I call complaining about gay people being loud with their homosexuality reaching. You have to meet someone on their grounds. I can see J4L probably making the most flamboyant of gay culture in his idea of a gay person (see: big gay al post). And I think he's using that as a shield. And when it's pointed out he wouldn't want to hang out with bros either, it's beside the point, which is that that stereotype really has nothing to do with them being gay as much as having a loud personality.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 07:29 PM) Why are you being so loud with your heterosexuality? I find it offensive. Well, I mean, I wouldn't want to live with a huge Bro. A very flamboyant gay person might not fit your personality. But it also doesn't have much to do with them being gay.

I really hope you do live with a gay person J4L, you'd probably soon be on our side. Plus you'd probably go to a lot of fun parties.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 04:58 PM) And you're naive if you don't think 99% of fathers or future fathers don't agree with me. I just come out and say it without trying to look like a nice guy. If I came home one day and saw my 6-year old son kissing another 6-year old boy, I'd go f***ing apes***. I'm not going to try to be understanding. I'm gonna be like WTF is going on and attempt to put an end to it immediately. Anybody who disagrees, I'm going to pull a Balta, you're lying to me and yourself. No, we're not lying. While I have a problem with kids kissing each other that young, there is nothing abnormal or wrong about being gay. I'd love my son for who he is.

A common line when people were participating in white flight was "I don't care if they work with me or can go anywhere, I just don't want to live next to em (black people)". Was that racist?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 03:54 PM) For a totally new idea, that's likely true...but we've seen more than a few times that companies with a significant consumer base have put out a solid product and used that product to butt into territory seemingly dominated by a different company. The smartphone market comes to mind there as an example. As does the browser market. Hell, Google has done pretty much exactly that in both of those cases...they're not the first person to the party like they were with their search, but they put out a solid system and people adopt it for that reason. But the things you listed do not depend on others activity in the way that social media does. Those are products. My email host can be great regardless of whether others use it, see phone. In fact, if you put some google + features as just add ons to the phone operating system it would probably see more success.

thread makes me sick to my stomach.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 03:55 PM) I have always found it bizarre that people in many minority groups seem to be the least tolerant of gays. You'd think groups with experience of being the targets of discrimination would be more supportive of different people, not less. It's probably more intuitive than you think but a lot of it comes out of power. But in the case of gays it mostly comes out of ignorance. I have no doubt that the reason attitudes of acceptance toward gays has skyrocketed in the past decade is the bravery of so many more who have come out. It's easy to hate something you never come into contact with, but when it's someone you love it's a completely different perspective.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 03:51 PM) FWIW, there are tons of hetero (both male and female) that I don't want to think about having sex in the next room either. Pretty much. I dont' want to hear my roommates having sex regardless of the fact that they are straight.
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 04:01 PM) I just find it interesting that a poster who claims he was depressed and thought about eating a bullet wouldn't want his future child to share depression with him to avoid those same feelings (as well as say, possibly loving someone of the same sex... FOR SHAME!) Jeez, have sex with and love whomever you want, people. Just be safe. Oh, and don't kill anyone. as long as they are of consenting age.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 03:52 PM) I think he means normal in this case in the typical view of society at large via majority acceptance. My point is this -- if I can even put this into words effectively -- it's not only him that thinks a "normal kid" isn't gay/lesbian, because this is a social norm by majority as accepted by society at large. In this regard, people tend to relate societal "norms" as what the majority happen to be, and in this case, that's straight. Which would make non-straights fall in the non-normal category, BUT, that's not to say they're not normal people as individuals, but in relation to society they aren't. ^^ I hope that comes off as I intended it and can be understood. I don't think the bulk of society is anti-gay or anti-lesbian because they regard straight as the norm, and gay/lesbian as something else...it is what it is. Then where do you draw the line? If they have a bunch of tattoos? If they are huge nerds? If they are loners? Are all of those worthy of disowning?

My .02. Obviously I didn't care about it in the first place. But my problem with it is my same problem with all of these google social media products. Mainly: I dont' feel like social media apps can grow top down. I think they need a hardcore small following that gets their friends, so their friends have friends that are using it actively and it's interesting from the getgo. But with google apps you just sit and wait for it to be interesting. And nobody around me is using it. So yeah, it's a cool interface, but you'd be better off doing some astro turf campaign where you give this to some 22 year old and he acts like he invented it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 01:31 AM) That is pretty funny after hearing about all of the ways that Obama won't compromise now. Why should he compromise. Congress is refusing to honor the debts it agreed to pay when it voted on them.

Well, I do think the term was relevant because part of it was knowing he was saying a word that should be bleeped and the mistake that it wasn't bleeped anyways. The other part was that it was disrespectful on a news show. A comedy show does sort of take that edge off, as shocking can be funny.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 09:31 PM) I don't mind a guy working for Time calling someone a jackass. It's more revealing of his character than anything else. Only in our silly media world is that suspension-worthy. Just like with Maher's anti-muslim screeds, Maher was way over the line. I'd complain more, but well, I don't subscribe to HBO or watch his show, so no one would care if I complained. I agree, that's pretty disgusting. I even think you lose that "stand up comic" thing when you go from your standup routine where i could see it happening pretty easily, and then when you have your "political talkshow". But also I should add that halperin is a hack whod i'd support being suspended even if it's not fair to him.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 09:01 PM) How does one classify themselves as a tea party member who's not racist when people just classify all tea party members as racist? I get your point, but you guys do the same s*** and act like it's different because what, your opinion is more valid? Frankly when the tea party thread started with a bunch of blanket statements you had a bunch of the admins in here and other posters saying "you can't make blanket statements" etc. The difference is now there are admins endorsing this activity, which I would argue is bad for the forum. The tea party racist things was bad, and it was addressed early on and i think the point was driven home and people have TRIED to stop. The suicide in kentucky where the person tried to play it off as a murder because he was a census worker was a thread where I was completely wrong. It's not like we are going to reduce the amount of blanket statements or heated arguments in here to zero in here, it would probably get pretty boring anyway. And the regulars here usually realize on their own when they step over the line and just leave to cool off. But I do think people try to have honest conversation and when pure incitement happens it should get the ridicule it deserves. I'm not sure if you remember, but athomeboy was as democrat as democrat could be during the 08 election and his constant stupid posts about the menial day to day in washington that was pro obama pretty much annoyed everyone. It wasn't at all helpful to discussion. So I find this pretty ridiculous that he's given so much leeway for personal attacks and blanket statements out of some sort of revenge.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 08:54 PM) I think this it the problem with any/all "I'm a patriot" arguments...it all depends on how it's defined. IMO, patriotism is anyone that loves the country they live in/are a citizen of, and wish for an even better future, etc, even if they see said future in a different way than I do. That's the open minded side of me talking. Now, the devils advocate side would probably say something more along the lines of, one argues they are a patriot because you are a socialist that wishes for more handouts. but that's precisely the point. This topic is at it's base just made for incitement. You wanna talk about healthcare, foreign policy, etc there is a whole crap load of room for legitimate discussion. I don't think questioning the patriotism of those who might want to reduce the budget of the military to be fostering an atmosphere where any honest discussion can happen.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 08:49 PM) Unless he's some old poster that's come back under a new name, I dunno how he can be trolling/baiting. He sounds like that's his honest opinion. You guys didn't debate or argue with him, you just attacked him for thinking that way. how does one argue that they ARE patriotic if the definition they are classifying for being patriotic are mostly just things that are identified with being republican?
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 08:18 PM) Fixed that for ya. At some point it's not worth the effort of contributing because you know that you'll instantly be called a racist homophob that hates poor people and ignores simple science. Also, I love that this new guy is just crushed for pages and pages because he stereotypes liberals as being anti-patriotic, but you guys spewed (and continue to spew) how much bulls*** about members of the Tea Party? (as one example) Again, I've been here a long time, the same s*** has been thrown from the other side just as hard, just as often. But frankly, a post like this whose sole purpose it is to delegitimize a wide swath of people has typically been called out by the mods. But the side that cries martrydom and takes their ball and goes home is pretty skewed right. You guys are victims of a left wing oppression, we get it.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 07:46 PM) It has nothing to do with arguing points, and everything to do with having a bullseye on your back as soon as you deviate from the Democratic Party line. It would be different if it hadn't been a pattern over a period of years now. oh please. If that was the case the libya and afghanistan threads would be full of democratic cheerleading and the healthcare thread would talk about how it's the greatest thing ever. But it's not the case, you just have people arguing from one side just like you have other people arguing from another side. This is just a practice of victimization.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 07:35 PM) Its because this board has had a double standard for a long time. Basically anyone who isn't left wing is picked at until they say the wrong thing, and then everyone cries out for a suspension. You guys can't handle anyone who thinks differently, and everything is done to get rid of them ASAP. Usually it takes longer than this, so bravo. bulls***. There have been a number of conservative posters who have left on their own because they didn't like having to argue their points to liberals on the board.. There is probably an equal split of liberal to conservative posters that actively participate in this forum. Both sides go at it about the same. ANd the conservatives whine just as much if not more.
