For me with crochet, probably making a mistake but just seems like recent pitchers like him (Pearson, mclanahan) big dudes, big arms, questionable production or competition, have overperformed recently.

We also have a severe lack of dynamic arms in our minor league system now. Thompson has some project-ability there. We went from "zomg look how many power arms we have" to a bunch of 26 year old rhps from louisville throwing 88 across our A and AA teams.

not gonna lie if their scouts feel like crochet was different this year...it's just a different draft. I didn't get to see any of these guys. There's highlights and that's cool and all. If the sox swing crochet and get a dynamite #2 that's interesting. Crochet is an insanely talented arm we know very little about. Abel didn't even pitch his senior year. Maybe he gets shelled! Bitsko people are going off his circuit when nobody was scouting him! I'm just saying if they get swing crochet/howard or something it changes it. I could very well see a situation where they felt very similar to a lot of these guys and felt like they could get 2 in the same tier with their budget.

I don't feel that strongly and could make a case for most, didn't want bailey and that seems to be in past. Will take: I think it's Abel or Detmers depending on how it shakes out Should take: I am pro either of those guys, but also have come on late to PCA and Hassel. Still really like Cavalli, and obviously like Howard. The one thing with Howard is I just feel like he's risky but also he's a dude that might show up when baseball restarts and has exploded. I just love how people describe how he plays/feels the game and it seems like he's still getting to learn how to use his body offensively.

I get that 2009 was the trout year and was a particularly loaded draft, but I can't believe how snake-bitten people still are of a 23rd overall pick now eleven drafts ago. Going for an athletic, upside college outfielder is not the worst idea in the world there. Fulmer is 10x the bust yet doesn't seem to embody the short right hander the way that jared mitchell is a cautionary tale for all athletes. And to be real, that draft had terrible picks round by round. Trayce Thompson is sandwiched between Nolan Arenado (2 picks) and Jason Kipnis. David Holmberg is picked before DJ Lemahieu, Corbin and Kyle Seager. This is the draft the cardinals drafted like 15 starters. I say no big ten catchers ever! No whatever David Holmberg was!

Sounds like Bowser A student of the game, Bowser loves to talk hitting and has the chance to develop into a run-producing corner infielder at the next level. The one thing that might make it tough is his commitment to Stanford, which his mother attended.

If they do that, they better get a guy unlikely to sign. Forget his name, but there's that one hard-commit to stanford right? I guess aside from the pathetic if its about money, isn't next year supposed to be really good? Maybe they calculated the risk of not being able to scout traditionally/lack of numbers/bigger bonus pool made going for what's available next year was better option?

I'd say given the draft position they were only average. Like you alluded to, it's about diversification. The white sox went severely college heavy especially from 2015-2018. Hostetler said this was to improve depth. Whether we benefited from having more competent first baseman in AA...not up to me. But the best athletes will often be picked out of high school. By drafting exclusively college and high school water polo players the sox missed out on working in some players that may be able to pair elite athleticism with elite baseball skills and grow with the competition. While you have the first round to go after the best college athletes/players, rounds 2-40 just lacked diversity in skill and body type. Should you only draft uber athletes and pass up someone with a plus- plus- refined skill? Should you only draft more developed college players? Should you only draft position players high? Should you never draft prep pitchers? You can have tendencies, but Hostetler went too far in one direction.
