Jon Garland
QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ May 2, 2005 -> 04:30 PM) The Sox organization has to be very cautious when it comes to Garland and not make the same mistake that they did by resigning Rowand. Garland is only five starts into the season and we all know anything could happen in the remained of his 27 starts. Garland hasn't had a track record for doing fantastic at the big league level, and it is Garland's contract year after all. I'd shy away from throwing any money at Jon for the forseeable future. They made a mistake with Aaron signing him to a pretty cheap deal just because he's off to a slow start like he always is?

if we are still in first place at deadline
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ May 2, 2005 -> 04:17 PM) I have a feeling that KW would go after Nomar(if healthy and the Flubs are out of it, as we know they will be). Seems like a KW move. He likes to get name players and Nomar at SS would show(the average fans) that the Sox are forreal about going after it all. Guarentee it wouldn't cost us McCarthy either. No thanks on Nomar. Keep Juan out there, he's obviously not the hitter Nomar is though he is pretty damn good with the stick but his glove is something special. I don't want to mess with that dp combo of ours.

The New Sox
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 2, 2005 -> 03:16 PM) So, if we hit like this the rest of the year, we'll be fine? Yes, I think so. Now, I think the offense is going to get better but we'll be fine either way. The sox are averaging 4.6 runs per game as of right now, the twins last year averaged 4.8 runs per game. This is a team that is playing more and more like Minny this year and can win games in ways the twins did last year.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ May 2, 2005 -> 03:21 PM) Well -- why is it these clutch guys only turn it on at certain times? Something I've always wondered. Big spot, you get lucked in, adrenaline rush, some guys can keep there nerves in check some can't, a different and better approach in different situations. There are many different reasons.

The Ways of Building a Pitching Staff
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ May 2, 2005 -> 03:11 PM) Contreras is tied with Johan for third in the AL for BAA (.200) He's been very good. He's hard on the eyes most of the time but as long as he keeps pitching like he has been then I'm perfectly fine with his approach.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ May 2, 2005 -> 03:18 PM) Not if the good pitching isn't there any more. "Timely hitting" -- when is this time when you're not supposed to be hitting? Riiight, my bad I forgot there was no such thing as clutch hitting. :banghead

The New Sox
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 2, 2005 -> 03:00 PM) Bingo. I can't see how anyone can actually defend our offensive production at this point, because in simple terms, it has sucked. I can see, however, someone defending that we improve upon that number, because too many guys were hitting well below what they should be hitting. I'll defend it. They aren't putting up astronomical numbers but for the most part they've come up with every single clutch hit they've had to. You'll win a ton of games like that, that's what the twins have done for years. Good pitching and timely hitting. The individual stats will improve but as long as the timely hittings there the offense will be fine.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 2, 2005 -> 01:06 PM) How exactly has manufacturing runs helped us in April? We've gotten lucky that our pitching has been so good -- which, was a good job by Kenny (and not really noted enough in the article, IMO). Other than the fact that he mentions the pitching staff coming back to earth, yet doesn't mention the offense getting it back together (after an awful April), I have no problems with the article. We were off to a hot start last year, and nothing came of it. I will say, though, I'm ten times more confident in this year's team than in last year's team. It's helped us a ton.

Kansas City

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ May 2, 2005 -> 02:23 PM) Why does everyone seemingly think that the Sox could not use more pitching, and that the offense is the biggest concern? The offense will heat up as the weather does...it has done that for about the past million years. The pitching will get worse. You do not honestly expect Hermanson and Politte to continue to pitch over their heads like this, do you? I like Hermanson a lot, but Politte scares me. Marte's BB/9 is Koch-esque. Shingo has been shaky to say the very least. Vizcaino has not been a stud for us by any means either. I would say about the first thing this team could use is a very strong pitcher in the pen. Add Billy Wagner, and you're looking at Wagner-Hermanson-Marte with Shingo, Viz, and Politte at the end...that is beyond sick, and probably the best bullpen in the majors. Vizcaino has been great, Damaso has and will be damn good this year. Hermy's going to cool off a bit but still be damn good, Cliff is going to stay around a 2.5 era this year, he's challenging the hitters which he didn't do last year, he's a different guy. I still think Shingo's going to turn it around and Neal is a pretty solid long man. I think the bullpen is as deep and as good as anyone's out there, that being said if you have a chance to get Billy Wagner for the right price like you said that'd be absolutely sick.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ May 2, 2005 -> 10:20 AM) The sad part is some people actually look at a game like it is fantasy baseball. :headshake Aboz, that is by far and away the best avatar in soxtalk history

QUOTE(BobDylan @ May 2, 2005 -> 01:10 AM) Green? 1-4 record against the White Sox isn't "fairing pretty well". Bob, sometimes sarcasm is so obvious that green isn't needed.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ May 2, 2005 -> 06:56 AM) Kinda early to be thinking about this, but I'd say we'll need another hitter before we need an arm. It's definitely early but when was the exact date the Freddy trade was made last year?? Late June, right? Kenny likes to work early if there is a pressing need. Right now like I said in another thread I think are big in season move will be the return of Frank Thomas, which is a pretty big move. Besides getting Frank back I really don't see any huge need barring an injury.

QUOTE(NCsoxfan @ May 1, 2005 -> 11:05 PM) What is Garlands contract status? How many more years is he locked up? Sorry this is off topic, I just didnt want to start a new thread just for that. Arbitration eligible after this year and then a free agent after the 06 season.

QUOTE(YASNY @ May 1, 2005 -> 11:00 PM) You don't need a whole lot of run support when you pitch shutouts. YASNY, I always knew you were smart but this comment just blew me away.

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ May 1, 2005 -> 10:56 PM) Well, he's talking in terms of run support. When Buehrle faces Santana, Radke, Sabathia, or Greinke, he ain't getting much run support. Now, Garland on the other hand? I don't have the statistics handy, and Garland doesn't exactly need any run support for the time being, but how many runs have we averaged per game for Garland thus far, and how does that figure compare to the rest of our starters? Actually, can anyone recommend a site where one can look these things up? Ask Juggs, I've got a hunch he knows where to find some stats.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 1, 2005 -> 10:52 PM) The trade that they did when they acquired Eric Milton for Silva and Nick Punto IIRC, was definitely another great move by Terry Ryan. Silva should provide an ERA of around 4 and win about 13 to 15 games, which is really pretty damn good for a #3 starter, especially in the AL. Ya, that sure worked well you know the Twins acquiring Milton and all

QUOTE(shagar69 @ May 1, 2005 -> 10:19 PM) Dee's not going anywhere, but im still not confident that we're gonna be good next year. It all depends on how Augie progresses, how good Randle, Arnold, Brock, and Pruitt are, and how Carter and McBride progress You guys will be absolutely fine.
