QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 02:25 AM) That's good, then we can have a long conversation about anything and I won't get pissed in my head when you use less and fewer and good and well incorrectly, while also being able to say especially without putting an 'x' in there. I don't have many pet peeves, and I really don't let those that do bother me that much...but mainly incorrect pronunciation and adverb/adjective use bugs the hell out of me. I'll quietly smile and listen, but really, I'm pissed and want to correct your grammar SO.FRIGGIN'.BADly Who are you

Hard to believe that such a good explanation of things came from Wite.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 01:46 AM) Not really. The HR rate was pretty consistent throughout the season. His control kept getting worse though. The HR rate was largely attributed to park though. He allowed 10 more HR at home (reading is a good hitters park)... 16.3% of his FB went for HR at home compared to 10.8% on the road, with 63% of his IP coming at home. We'll see if he can hack a small park at AAA too, it'll be a good guide for USCF. Gotcha. I haven't looked through his splits from last season, I was just throwing that out there as a possibility.

Garcia to Philly for Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 01:34 AM) So Dayn Perry likes the deal. Should we be worried? I guess the new, bloated version of Dayn Perry has a new perspective on Kenny Williams moves. -
QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 01:32 AM) If he is able to cut his BB and HR rates at AAA, he returns to elite prospect status, and is penciled into the '08 rotation. Those two might go hand in hand, meaning with his shaky control from last season he might have been falling behind more hitters and then served one up. Hopefully he cuts down on the control problems next season.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 01:28 AM) Hence why bringing in a lefty reliever should be a priority right now. No way do I want to start Gio's arbitration clock this season (unless he dominates and deserves a callup later on). I think Boone is going to win that spot and I honestly don't have a problem with that. Like I said in the trade thread, I think our pen for next season is going to be: Bobby, Matt, MacD, Aaaaaaaaardsma, Boone and Floyd. Might not be the humungous upgrade everyone expected but it sure has a lot of upside and 3 guys we can for sure count on.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 01:19 AM) I don't think there's anyway the Cubs allow Carlos Zambrano to hit the open market, though it would definately be best for him if he did. Imagine the killing he could make in free agency. If he ever hit free agency, he's a player I'd want the Sox to throw billions of dollars at.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 01:20 AM) If Gio starts the year in AA B-Ham he'll dominate. Repeating the level and moving to a really good pitchers park are 2 factors for that. But it's conceiveable the Sox could start him at Charlotte if they want to move him quickly. I'd let him start at B-Ham and build up some momentum 1st though. Ya, that's the question I asked in the trade thread: If Gio would start in Birmingham or Charlotte as I truely don't know, I guess we'll find out soon. To me now, Gio is by far and away our number 1 spect just because of his upside and because he's a pitcher.
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 01:05 AM) Gio Gonzalez a mid level prospect. Ha. He'd almost be the Sox's #1 prospect right now. He IS our number 1 prospect imo. And this coming from someone who isn't exactly super high on the guy. Gio, Sweeney, Broadway, Fields in that order, imho.

QUOTE(Soxman72 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 08:09 PM) A-Rod if moved will be on his 4th team. Do you think the Seattle fans miss him? How about Texas? I will bet that IF moved New York will help pack his bags. Correct me if I am wrong (And I could be), but didnt thos players you listed win Championships? You're honestly using championships in baseball to show how good a player is? No offense, but that's ridiculous. He's an offensive player, he can only do so much.

QUOTE(Soxman72 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 08:02 PM) In all honesty if Juan Uribe had A-Rods numbers in the postseason he would have a great reputation. -BUT- A-Rod makes a lot of money and is supposed to be a franchise player. He is supposed to be one of the best players of all time and he hasn't put up outstanding numbers in the playoffs like he should. Once again If A-Rod is so great and perfect - Why are the Yankees shopping him. I am not trying to be an ass, but I have my own opinions. Well Wayne Gretzky was traded, Babe Ruth was sold, Wilt Chamberlain was traded. No offense but the "why are they shopping him?" excuse is a bit ridiculous.
-
QUOTE(Soxman72 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 07:52 PM) Are you calling A-Rod a good playoff player? He certainly hasn't been bad.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 07:42 PM) Wow, people really are that bored. Arguing on a message board is much more fun than studying for finals.

QUOTE(Soxman72 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 06:32 PM) When has Jeter called out a teammate? Jeter is the ultimate professional and he leads by example. In this big circus that is the Yankee clubhouse how many times do you hear negative news about Jeter I agree, like that time Jeter moved over from short to 3rd to make room for a better defensive shortstop.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 02:25 AM) A thought just entered my mind. Is there any chance in hell that the Sox use that $10M in available payroll to take a run at Pettitte or Clemens for one year? I highly doubt it sir. -

I'd recommend watching the press conference if you guys haven't yet. The beginning and end especially are rather entertaining. -

QUOTE(whitesox61382 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 01:28 AM) My initial reaction to this trade was similar to the majority of Sox fans that didn't like it, but I will attempt to take a step back and look at some of the potential positives of this trade(I haven't read the entire thread so I am not sure if they have been posted). *Sox fans overrate Garcia - solid, proven, middle of the rotation, veterans pitchers are a nice comodity, but I think some fans were making Garcia into a Johan Santana at least in trade value. Let not forget that this guy had a very mediocre season last year, and without a few outstanding starts towards the end of the season would have had pretty bad overall stats. Who knows what to expect from Garcia next year? Is he going to regain his fastball? Is he going to pitch like he did for the first half of the season? Is he going to become a very good pitcher with his new splitter? It is like playing Russian roulette. *Garcia is a FA next year - the fact remains that the Sox could have possible lost Garcia next offseason with nothing to show for in return. It is highly unlikely that they would have given him a relatively long-term deal in the ten-twelve million per year range, which is what he would likely command with the new high prices for FA. There was no guarantee that they would have offered him arbitration and got a few draft picks, so getting a couple of solid young pitchers in return guarantees that they will obviously get something in return. *Young pitching is how you build a perienal contender - With the exception of the Yankees who can pay five starters ten+ million per year, the way to build a perienial contender is by incorporating young pitching. Teams like Oakland and Minnesota have given the recipe needed to constantly contend. Beane wasn't affraid to trade proven veteran like Hudson and Mulder for unproven young pitchers, and because of it Oakland has the young pitching foundation needed to contend for a while. Same goes for Minnesota, although they have mostly developed their own young pitching through their minor league system. Let face the facts, the Sox rotation is getting older and the Sox minor league system has few top pitching prospects, so they need to start somewhere. *Save money - I am not sure whether any cash is involved in the deal, but the Sox will likely save roughly ten million this season with this trade. That money can be used to sign a few FA or could be used to add a big salary player via a trade. See the Carlos Lee trade for an example of how saving money can improve the team. In fact, I think you can make an argument that the trade is Garcia for Floyd, Gonzalez, and a PTBN or two(meaning what and see how that ten million is spent) *Another trade - I am not sure whether the Sox intend on using Floyd in the rotation or starting him in AAA next year, but I wouldn't be surprised to see another big trade before the offseason is over. If the Sox intend on using Floyd as the 5th starter(or are planning on adding other young pitchers to contend for that spot), than you will likely see the Sox move another veteran pitcher. The Sox might also decide to use Floyd and/or Gonzalez as trade bait to add a proven veteran(maybe an outfielder). *Floyd/Gonzalez might surprise - Floyd certainly has the stuff to be a front of the rotation starter, and certainly has the stuff to be a solid starter in the majors next season. Gonzalez becomes the Sox top pitching prospect IMO, and despite his so-so season last year has a ton of potential. And lets not forget that he was only twenty pitching in AA as well. He is well ahead of the learning curve at this point. Point being, we should look at the positives and negatives of this trade before we come to the conclusion of whether it is a good trade or bad trade. As always, only time will determine if this is a good trade or not. Good post sir. -

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 01:11 AM) Well, now that I'm liquored up a bit, and have had a chance to fully break this deal down, it's not as bad as I originally thought. I still think we could've done a little better. But Freddy is a FA at the end of next year. We have to remember that. I am estatic to have Gio back, though. LOL, what's with you and drunk posting as of late? -

QUOTE(whitesox1976 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 01:01 AM) I doubt very much if Floyd will be a starter. Bmac is a lock for the starting rotation IMO. No doubt Mac is going to start but if anything it can push Brandon a bit in spring training. A little competition is a good thing. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 12:51 AM) It doesn't look that bad, but on paper, it doesn't look incredibly shockingly amazing either, and that's the only complaint I think you can realistically have. With the decrease in Floyd's value, it just seems difficult to believe we couldn't talk the Phillies out of a little more. Just a little bit more. Garcia, Rowand, and Haigwood for Thome, Floyd, and $20 million or so. It's the health thing for me. I'm just not convinced he won't turn into a Prior/Liriano. But as good as our team has been at avoiding people with severe injury problems over the last few years, that seems like something we're good at, and I keep telling myself that they wouldn't actually reacquire Gio if they weren't convinced he could stay healthy. That's definitely a part of it.
