  1. Maggs and Frank's numbers are very similar. The only real differences is that Maggs is hitting 20 points higher and Frank's OBP is much higher due to 30 additional walks... The rest of the numbers are right there together.
  2. He was removed from a game a week or two ago after being hit by a pitch. Hasn't been in the lineup since. Not sure of the specific injury.
  3. Or his dad told him...
  4. That begins to make some sense then. Good for him. Let him play 3 years and if he is good enough we can draft him again.
  5. It's been awhile since I have had friends that signed, but generally the college money is for the player if he doesn't make it to the Majors within a specified time. It may be different now, I am not sure.

  12. OK, Jason, I have two completely unrelated questions.... 1. After a player is drafted, the Major League club has to make him an offer within a specified time or the player becomes a free agent. (Travis Lee, Bobby Seay, Matt White) What if the big league club drafts a guy with the intention of him being a draft and follow? They still have to make him at least a courtesy offer to retain his rights, correct? If so, what if the player accepts the offer? They would have to take him in that instance, I would think that the Sox had just bought themselves a player. 2. Where did you get the info that Sean Gaston received a full ride to Notre Dame? The reason I ask is that it is my understanding that full rides are very rare in college baseball because of scholarship limitations. Most teams will carry 25 or even 30 players and the NCAA only allows 11.7 scholarships for baseball. If he did indeed get a full ride, then I am curious as to why he wasn't more highly regarded. Granted, he could get a combination of athletic scholarship/academic scholarship/financial aid, but you generally don't hear something like that termed "full ride". I guess my point is, if that is indeed correct, what else can we find out about him? Notre Dame is a damned good baseball school, so a full ride there would be a serious coup, I would imagine.
  13. Basically you are gambling a draft pick that the player will improve enough in the next season that he will have value to the club and be worth signing. They often do this with guys they see potential in for big improvement. It is generally cheaper to sign a guy you drafted last year in the 30th round that could be a 5th round pick the next year, if you can sign him before the draft. You continue to scout the player to guage his improvement. There can be other reasons for draft and follows from budgets, to the number of players needed. If you sign all 50 guys, then you are going to have to do some clearing of existing players in your Minor League system. Draft and follows can occur in the upper rounds or even earlier in the draft. For example, Heath Phillips was a 10th round draft and follow. Did that make sense or did I ramble?
  14. Jason, if he signed a professional contract, then he's done with HS ball. He would lose his amateur status just by signing it.

  19. Much better than Thursday night's meltdown..... Decent outing by Pacheco... perhaps he was off just enough that the Rangers scouts will pass on him, but I doubt it. He was hitting 94-95 again last night. Reed only has two hits in his last two games. Something must be wrong. LOL Congrats to Mr. Bullard on his first save. Last night was also Vida Blue bobblehead doll night. Vida was there signing them and hanging out. He was really cool. 21. Damn, why couldn't that be at home??
  22. Hankins has dropped off slightly the last couple of days, but is still hitting well over .300.
  23. Yofu gave up two HR's (3 runs total) in the first inning last night and then basically gave up nothing the rest of the way. Unfortunately, he was going against Bruce Chen, who also gave up nothing, so he picked up the loss in a 3-2 game. 10 K's is correct.
  24. I thought Sweeney would get closer to a million... I know this won't be popular and I can hear everyone saying "but he could get hurt" but I am not a big fan of signing this kid before his high school season was complete. In the big picture, his professionally is definitely more important, but it still doesn't sit too well with me that he is now basically leaving his teammates high and dry who are making a run at the State Championship. To be good enough to be ranked #1 in the state, those players had to put in a lot of time and hard work. That is something that really means a lot to those kids, and should to Sweeney as well. I don't discount playing for a Championship at any level as unimportant. Sure, his teammates may "understand" and "support him" but you know damned well that deep down inside they feel somewhat betrayed. Now if I have incomplete information and his team just recently lost in the playoffs and his season is over, then someone please correct me. However, if that is not the case, then my thoughts are why in the hell could you not have let him play for 2-3 more weeks??
  25. Because a Sac fly ties the game. If maggs gets thrown out, that can't happen anymore. You don't run yourself into an out, you tie the game before you think about winning it. Than again don't you always go for the win on the road? Detroit wouldn't risk throwing the ball down to second, if they did it has a chance of going into center. It's been done plenty of times before, I gurantee you Meares wasn't even thinking about Maggs at first base. CWSOX45 It may happen with a different base runner, but it is still not a good baseball move. No need to second guess the right move, just because of bad luck.
