QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 07:37 PM) Not only that, but it will be at least 2-3 years before Beckham does anything of note at the MLB level. This isn't the NBA or NFL. He will prob be up the end of next season with a shot in 2010.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 08:37 PM) ARE YOU s***TIN' ME?!?!??!? He couldn't even cut it with ASU....and he get's drafted?!?!?!? I can't even begin to tell ya how bad this pisses me off. Very disappointed we didn't take Kiel Roling in the 5th or 6th. Kyle friggin Williams....what a joke. Didn't look close...but noticed somebody said Jordan Danks was still on the board at the time of the pick....is that true? It looks like he's going back to school. He was once projected as a first round pick, theres no reason he would drop so far unless he wasnt available.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 08:24 PM) If Kenny Williams Jr. ever sniffs the big leagues, I'll f***ing kiss your balls. thats like betting someone wont win the lottery, the odds are extremely lopsided in your favor.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 08:04 PM) What does my baseball experience have to do with anything? What, you have to be a pro to be able to evaluate prospects? For your information, I have been playing baseball my whole entire life, and have been following it my whole life. Granted, I might not even be able drink legally yet, but I think for the almost 20 years I have practically lived baseball, I have picked up on a few things. Does this make me a pro-scout? Far from it... but as someone who was born holding a baseball bat and has been hitting his whole life and has studied hitting his whole life, I think I have decent knowledge of a players hitting ability. And how much have you seen these two kids play? How many amateur kids have you scouted that turned out to be big league players? As a 20 year old watching baseball in the games you play and on TV, your experience in seeing what "translates" isnt very extensive. There are literally millions and millions of people out there with the same exact baseball experience you have, its not like you are above and beyond what other kids your same age have seen or done.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 08:10 PM) Jeez. Until the KW2 pick, I would have given them a B thus far. But WTF is up with the favor draft? That is just dripping with unprofessional B.S. That knocks it down to a C. The best part about baseball drafting is that outside of the top picks, you really have zero idea how the kids talent and skills will translate to major league baseball. Its entirely a crapshoot. Look at the history of #1 picks even. Its funny we grade this and grade that, but really nobody on here knows much about these kids.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 05:58 PM) Yeah, I do. Sorry. That was real weird. I checked it twice, because I had posted the same numbers earlier today too (you can see it in an earlier post). I wasn't even on the same computer the two different times either. I have no idea why the data didn't update. He dropped from .292 to .278 and his AB's went up 7, so, that must be last night's game that made the difference. Anyway, it doesn't change my view that AJ is a solid #2 guy. Ramirez would be fine too while he's hot, as he doesn't strike out much either, and is getting on base plenty. Yeah yeah yeah. AJ is decent in that role, but for him, he's better in the 6th slot. I am VERY in favor of seeing Swish in the 2 spot, mostly because he sees so many pitches per at bat and i think he would see more fastballs with Q behind him.

Now I dont watch or follow a ton of College baseball, what is the significance of being a "friday night" pitcher vs a saturday night pitcher

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 05:46 PM) Maybe it's just because I have zero faith that the Sox can develop players in the minors right now? Hopefully Buddy Bell can change that. Its possible he has alot to do with some of the picks after Beckham. Also did anyone catch the article in the back of SI this week? Its called the Heist, and its about Q

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 05:12 PM) Yeah, you're right I found it odd that they included the city. Some people still think Cal and Berkeley are different schools....
-
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 06:10 PM) Not really, that's actually just Cal Poly. They play in the same league as Fullerton, Long Beach St. and Irvine. Looking at their schedule, that's one thing you can't question. Ah you beat me to it. There are plenty of schools here in the midwest and the south that do not play teams like Cal Poly plays.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 04:45 PM) WTF? I just copied those numbers out! Damn ESPN. I think you owe me an apology, and an edit.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 06:00 PM) Nice to see the Sox scouting department still sucks round 3 pick is a complete waste! Way to take charge KW! Yes, this kid might as well just stop playing, he's got to be crappy. Right Mark Buehrle?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 12:45 PM) One of the couple big weaknesses in the Chicago bid was cited as transit and transportation. This plays perfectly into Chicago's hands. They can go with that to Washington and get a metric f***-ton of money for transit, which the city needs anyway. Plus, if Obama is elected President... Chicago will get every dime it asks for. NOTE: Not trying to endorse a candidate here, just saying, if that happens to occur, it helps the city and the Olympic cause. Yup. The El system needs a drastic overhaul, it needs expansion into other parts of the city other than the 3 lines that go up north, and the entire southside needs more direct public routes. Metra and Amtrak I assume will get an improvement as well. Maybe a monorail??????? jk I would kill for the EL to be something like DC's train system.

QUOTE (knightni @ May 24, 2008 -> 07:55 PM) 8 for 29 in the #2 hole since May 14. That's .277 4 R 1 RBI 3 BB 11 times on base in 32 times at the plate, that's .344 OBP. Not horrible. AJP in the #2 spot .278 .316 .389 .705 Not good. Hitting 6th .315 .351 .522 .872

Oh how i miss the days of the fast conference call draft.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 03:51 PM) This guy has above average bat speed and generates power to all fields. Smoak is a better pure hitter, but that doesn't necessarily indicate he's the better prospect. If both reach there upside, I'll take Beckham (cause that means your getting a SS who hits for average, power, and plays solid defense (not gold glove defense). To me that is more important than a first baseman who mashes (look around the majors and you'll see a lot more first baseman that mash than shortstops that put up those type of numbers). I would have had no problem with Beckham or Crow for that matter but the only guy I'd truly have had a hissy fit with is if we passed on Posey (and to a lesser extent Skipworth). Its so ironic, everyone hates our base clogging sluggers in the majors, but they want us to draft one. Beckham was a great talent pick, and also a great need pick.
-
What a great pick. Although several people on Soxtalk apparently still want that slow corner slugger (yet they hate ours during game threads) this kid has the potential to be an impact top of the order type hitter. I love the pick. We should see him late next year.
-
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) I'm not saying I hate Beckham or won't cheer for him if he plays for the Barons, I just thought that Smoak would have brought more to the system than Beckham. Like another slow footed base clogging power hitter? Yipeee!
-
During games all of soxtalk clamors for more line drive hitters who play the game the right way and aren't big base clogging power guys. We draft one of these guys, perfect to round out our lineup and everyone wishes they picked someone else. The sox brass picked the best guy on the board, picked a need for the system and for the big team, and yet its continually second guessed? You people need a reality check. If some of you guys were dating jessica alba, I'm pretty sure you'd wish you were with someone else.

White Sox sign Esteban Loaiza/Option Wassermann
RockRaines replied to Steff's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Wow, I couldnt have been more wrong, I dont understand this move at all. Lance is better than Loaiza at this point. Stupid, Masset was perfect as the long man. -
QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 03:35 PM) That moment just might be the single greatest moment ever for me as a Sox fan. Every time I see it (I watch it quite often), I just get chills. Ha, my friend that I share my season tickets with was in the bathroom when it happened. I havent let him live it down yet.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 05:31 PM) That would explain a lot of things. So, would they then do a 6 man rotation? Or alternate Loaiza and MB in the rotation maybe? I would think that Masset would be first in line for that job before Esteban. Nick has way more upside and at this point is a better pitcher. Loaiza is still just rotation insurance. And for putting him in the pen instead of Wass, that makes Zero sense.
