  1. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 02:29 AM) OBP doesn't mean s*** when you are staring at strike 3 right down the middle. Uh, what? You are basically just cherry picking the few times you see a player do that and getting upset about it if you dont think a high OBP isnt s***. I would take a player with an great OBP when EVERY K he makes is looking. Edit: I didnt read that you were specifically talking about Swisher, I agree with you on him.
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 10:09 AM) Thome was, at one time not that long ago, a good defensive 1B. I realize he's had back issues since and he's no spring chicken, but if Paulie is out, I'd bet they get Thome at 1B a few times in the interleague road series'. He also plays on one good foot. There is no chance.
  3. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 08:00 AM) For some reason I keep thinking this thread says "When Thome goes to Hell." Behind the scenes, Thome is a big player in the Chinese sex trade.
  4. Paulie is done for the year IMO. This was the injury that killed him last year and I think he will fight the same issues this year. He wont be able to turn on the inside pitch which will kill his production.
  5. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 04:01 PM) Since I'm relatively new here (didn't start posting until the offseason before this one), having you pop up is like having a great poster appear out of nowhere. QWERTY was the reason I signed on to Soxtalk for the first time, actually to argue with him.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 05:24 PM) Going to have to defer to others on this one...The Plantar Fascia is related/attached to the Achilles tendon in a number of ways...but if he had a torn achilles I don't think there'd be any talk of him coming back and he'd have been on the 60 day DL. From what I understand, him tearing the tendon that connects the front of the foot to the heel is the first step in recovering from PF. I guess its the inflamation of said tendon or something of the sort, and eventually it just pops. After that I believe you just have to wait for the inflammation to go down.
  7. We deserve a win here with how one was stolen from us last night.
  8. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 08:19 AM) I sometimes get the feeling around here that people wish Player X (let's use Pods as the example here), would fail miserably, just so they can say, "I told you so!$#@#$!$#", regardless of the affect it has on the team. I've been around this website for quite a few years -- before the influx of "talent" in 2005 =D, and I have to say that there was a time when criticism was much more constructive around here, compared to now where it doesn't matter what the Sox do, it sucks...and if it turns out to be ok, we get 50 stupid f***ing posts about eating crow. How about eating s***, instead. (This wasn't directed at you, either.) As evidenced by the Admin post at the top of the site, I think alot of people have noticed this. This site at times has become more of a site for negativity than for actual fans of the baseball team. There are people who take great joy in the failures of the team, because it gives them a chance to be critical of the management, or the players, or the ownership, or whatever it is that they dont like that particular day. Its exactly the reason that losing or critical threads are so much longer than the threads dedicated to success. I remember a few years ago when Soxtalk was a ghost town after losses because people were so down because the team we love didnt come through that day. Nowadays losses bring many more people out of the woodwork, and success is something that is just glanced at. It's sad really, at least to me. I came to this site to share my ideas, emotions, and time with folks who loved the White Sox as much if not more than I did. I hope someday it gets back to that point, because it was truly fun for most of us to share in our day to day emotions over the team, but always having the common goal of watching the Sox succeed.
  9. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 06:50 PM) Yeah, I've been exercising my shoulder since I've been 15. I've been able to keep the pain low enough where I can keep playing competitively but I figure it's going to eventually get pretty bad. Hopefully not though. Rock, where'd you play your club ball at? I played for SPRI, Second City and Flyers.
  10. So was D-train just a gimmick, or was he on PED's? Because thats a hell of a fall from grace.
  11. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 07:18 PM) HE's shown speed, power, a good batters eye. His swing isn't even close to ugly, just a bit long. So on MLB.com they said he projects as a CF'er who can steal bases and hit for power. Do you think thats accurate?
  12. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 07:14 PM) Jared Mitchell is not an Upton Brother. Not even close. Never said he was, but most people consider them great athletes, not pure baseball players. They are great at baseball because of their elite athleticism.
  13. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 07:12 PM) I'm so sick of people saying we got the best athlete in the draft, big whoop. Josh Fields is a great athlete as well... I don't give a s*** about athletes, give me baseball players. One game against the Rays running all over us and you will change your tune. The kid looks like he plays ball pretty well, .300+ avg, Sb's some power, good defense, that looks like a baseball player to me. Would you consider the Uptons, Crawford etc athletes or just baseball players?
  14. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 07:07 PM) f*** no, this guy is a project. His high BB walk this year is promising, but he needs some serious refinement to his game. His swing needs a lot of work, he doesn't get good reads on fly balls, and his arm is average at best... I could handle this pick if Brothers wasn't still on the board, but you don't pass up a pitcher with Brothers stuff for a huge project like Mitchell. Let me ask you this, how come all the other teams passed on him? Is he that good that only a few folks on this board value him that high?
  15. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 07:06 PM) Don't slit your wrists over Mitchell. He's the best athlete in the draft, 20 years old, and has great power potential as well. He was a kid that bench pressed 335 pounds and squatted 450 pounds before he stepped on LSU's campus. He has a funky, loopy swing right now that can really be shortened up. He also uses a one-handed swing often that limits his power. His swing can have a ton of work on it, which can be good news with the right coaching. Josh Fields, Joe Borchard, Brian Anderson etc all had swings that were pretty much set, and just never could close the hole in the swing. Thanks for the input. I like it. Lets go get some arms!
  16. QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 07:04 PM) http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2009/...ontent=mitchell Thanks, I like the comment about the Raw power potential. Sounds like some of the Rays guys.
  17. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 07:03 PM) From BA Do you think this is the type of guy you bring up quickly? It looked to me like the guys were saying he was a bit of a project.
  18. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 07:02 PM) In the last year, how many posts have we seen complaining about station to station baseball, and how Williams eventually needs to address it. Sox select probably the best athlete in the draft, and it's a huge mistake. This coming from people who have either never seen him play, or at most seen 15 of his AB's. Spot on. I also think they go arm with the next pick.
  19. QUOTE (daa84 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 06:59 PM) yep...im gonna say it cuz i know I'm not the only one thinking it....and people might torch me for saying this...but i think kenny williams gives preferential treatment to black players *crickets* Wow. The MLB guys loved this pick, said he had the highest upside of any position player in the draft. Can we look back to see who were the people upset with Beckham being drafted?
  20. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 06:59 PM) i'm not a fan of this front office... i feel like they don't do anything right of late. drafting for need? silly. I know, they should have totally taken a pitcher last year too.
  21. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 04:50 PM) Speaking of Jeffrey Eugenides, have you or anybody read The Virgin Suicides? It's better than the movie, even though that's not all that bad. That movie was Coppola's coming out party. (Sophia)
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 12:40 AM) Their starting pitching is significantly better than ours (being in the NL helps). Hopefully CQ is back for those games and that we skip Colon's start. We're going to see Zambrano, Dempster, and Wells in the series at Wrigley. We won't match up well with no Thome in the lineup against those righties. better because the NL helps their numbers, pitcher by pitcher we have them beat. Our pen blows theirs away.
  23. Even if Fields made some errors with the media, Willis is a perfect guy for him to mash and he's a much better hitter than Nix. I'd prefer Becks at 2B where he will play the next several years and fields at 3B.
