It's really Lopez+Kopech as kopech would take his place part way through the season. However I agree with the premise. If a innings eater 4-5 type is available without a crazy contract, it would be worth getting.

Garrett Richards to Boston, 1 year $10 million.

No doubt. Which is why I prefer not to trade away the stating pitching in the minors. It has the potential to be very good. -

It is not an all in season. Its a season where the are taking a shot but also continuing to develop players for the future. Robert and Madrigal are going to have growing pains and Cease will hopefully continue to grow as well as Vaughn, kopech, crochet and steiver all of whom are close to the MLB. Besides you said another failure that we are used to from thr FO. I just pointed out that I'm not used to failure from the FO as they've had some offseasons recently that I wouldn't call failures. -

Just because it didn't work doesn't mean it wasn't worth the shot. I agree it didn't work bit it wasn't a long term issue as the players were gone the next year. -
Dodgers sign Bauer (3/102, opt-outs, 40-45-17)

No doubt. A contract if that size goes straight to the boss in any oraganization. -

Each season has its own budget. I'm going to guess that 13 million a few seasons ago really didn't impact much after the revenue drop last year. They always have a budget. Extrapolating it from a few years ago is a useless exercise. You could say they saved that money on the really good contracts they signed sale, quintana and Eaton to that allowed them to acquire much of the talent currently on the team. -

You consider the past few off seasons failures? You do have interesting expectations. Acquiring Giolito, Keuchal, Lynn, Grandal, Moncada, Jimenez, Robert, Cease and Hendriks. Extending really good contracts to Abreu, Moncada, Jimenez and Robert. They've built a pretty good team. -

Because is was worth the shot to try to get Machado. The money is inconsequential. You say Bush league, I say good attempt to upgrade the team. -
Don't get impatient now. They went through a 4 year rebuilding process and can really extend that window of competitive teams with the recent drafts and international signings.

It is when they have prospect depth. As stated before Dunning wasn't in the top 3 for pitching prospects. They have more in the pipeline. I will agree with this if they trade more than 2 more away. -

Exactly. Sone prospects are used for short term gain others are kept for long term progress of the team. -

I understand. Those players were signed as an attempt to get Machado to the Sox. It failed. Doesn't mean it wasn't worth the effort. -
1. Any injuries or lack of development from players especially pitching as it has a higher injury rate. Plus Keuchal and Lynn aren't young 2. 3 is enough pitching in the playoffs. The younger ones will have another season to develop. 3. Doesn't mean he won't cause trouble with it in the clubhouse, with the staff and for the entire length of the contract. He is a little outspoken.

So the lesson is to never sign FA again? Never trust the current FO to sign FA? Those who live in the past live with depression Those who live in the future live with anxiety Only those who live in the present truly live. You can learn from the last but you can't change it so do what you think is the best in the current situation. -
1. That type of contract will be the end of any FA acquisitions for the next 3 years because of what it will do to their budget. 2. Long term deals to pitchers are very risky. 3. The guy still insists he wants to pitch every 4th day and i wouldn't want to disrupt the other pitchers in the rotation just for him.
-
What were the odds that he must not be named would turn into what he did? At the time if the trade few even knee of him and no one has seen him. If they do that trade those are pretty much all of their top pitching prospects. They would have Vera and dalquist. It would decimate any chance if a competitive team in 3 years.
-
You'll need to wait and see. 3 top pitching prospects for a single pitcher has the makings of an even worse trade. What would be more valuable, 3/5 of a starting rotation or a single position player, regardless of how good he is?
-
It may do this but it keeps a higher priced player in the roster that would otherwise be filled by a utility player. It helps the union have an extra high priced player in the lineup. Also keeps players making more money in the lineup instead of not being able to play.
-
That deal would ruin the future if the Sox. That would be worse than the deal involving he who must not be named.

Those who live in the past......... -
Starting pitching is almost always the primary factor in determining a good season.
-
I really don't see those as advantages compared to the cost to owners, I think it hasn't happened because the owners are holding out to use it as leverage to get the players to expand the playoffs.
-
What would be the advantage for the owners to have a universal DH? It would raise players salaries and extend the career of hitters from the union side.
-
This won't be because it is a decidedly an advantage for the union. The ones in the article above benefit both sides.
