It is misleading because it doesn't show you how the teams did in the individual years. I the other post I just made it shows a team the made the WS with a payroll of 28th and top payroll teams with winning percentages under .500. You don't have to have a big payroll to win, that is what fundamental means. It gives you a better chance especially over time but it is not fundamental to winning.

This a case of misleading data. As any statistician knows, you can make the data says what you want in many cases. As stated previously using averages can be very misleading. but the issue I have with our statement is that it is fundamental to winning. That is not the same as gives you a better chance over a long period of time. 4 out of the top 10 payrolls last year had under .500 records red sox, astros, mets, phillies, nationals, and giants the 2 world series teams ranked 2 and 28. Of course the big payroll helps but it not fundamental to winning.
-
Agreed. While I'm sure they would love to win the WS. It is their job and there are many other factors that apply.
-
Sure as an average as you show. This is the same issue with taking the average performance of a season by a player and applying it to the post season. Using an average over time is a misleading statistic. Doesn't mean its fundamental. It gives a team a better chance no doubt. However, there are always teams with lower payrolls that do well.

As I said, you can't generalize either group. It's not correct to say that the wealthier are smarter but is also not correct to say that poor people are just as smart. There are some of each in both groups.
-
True, but I still think with the turnover in these positions, job security has to rank as one of the higher qualities.
-
Some are, some aren't when it comes to intelligence (that was the topic). Some people are just naturally smarter than others. Some have the drive to succeed, some don't. That's the beauty of being different. Generalizing either group is incorrect.

didn't realize that was his title. I'm sure that's why ha has that title. Guess they would need to offer him a Grand Poobah title or something to circumvent any block by JR.
-
I don't necessarily agree. Every year there are lower payroll teams and every year there are plenty of big payroll teams that don't get in the playoffs and win. Does it help yes, i don't think it is fundamental though.

Local college or HS is usually the venue

I'll leave it at that.
-
No. But just because you spend money doesn't mean it will work either. That's why complaining about spending money to spend money doesn't help. It's not about spending the money its spending on the appropriate players and for the most part they no much more about the players than we do.
-
Yes. One made the playoffs and the other didn't.

I believe that's only for a lateral move. The Phillies could call him VP of baseball operations and not need permission.
-
I guess that may do it but it would be hard to leave with this type of job security. Plus he's shown in the past that he really wants to be here.
-
Why would someone leave? Job security is not an issue. He turned down many interviews when he wasn't the GM.

Didn't the Sox trade Bobby Bonilla to get him? ? -
I agree. I just think the bullpens are undervalued especially when looking only at such stats as WAR or ERA. It hard to evaluate statistically when the sample sizes are so small with the number of batters they face.

Awfully negative. How about hope for the best and plan for the worst. -
I wasn't aware it was medicare only, just that it was happening.
-
I'm not sure of the exact dollar amount. That wasn't proposed by me. However, I know the hospital received extra money for COVID deaths. This was all earlier in the Fall when I was doing the pro bono at the hospital because they needed extra help. Now they are laying off people due to the medicare 9% cuts coming in the new year.
-
The issue is that RP are not valued in advanced metrics. Very few are better than replacement value by WAR because it is a counting stat so this tends to be undervalued.
-
It is happening everywhere. It is in the hospital I work at. At one point they were testing the decreased more than the living to attempt to make it a COVID death regardless of the cause of death.

In general I agree with their stance on not paying the high priced long term deals for pitchers. They rarely work out due to injury or ineffectiveness. With the budget limitations the FO has to work with, a contract of this type could cripple this team. For example I was one of the only posters to push for Keuchal as opposed to Wheeler. Not that Keuchal was or is better simply because of the years allocated to the contract. This is why the development and trading for pitchers is so important for this team.
