If the Yankmees came up with at least a decent deal, he was going to take it. There comes a point where it just isn't worth the capital for the player. This is not the same scenario for Harper, if I were the Sox I would go significantly higher for him. However, in my view, I wouldn't for Machado.

If its 8/275, I don't blame the Sox for not beating that by a significant margin. He would not be worth 40 million AAV.

It is probably the case that no amount of money that would change his mind. Besides the Sox will trade for him in 2 years when he is tired of the Yankmees fans booing him.

So there is no possiblity that Machado always wanted to play for the Yankmees and Harper always wanted to play in LA and nothing was going to change their minds? Since all of the deals were going to be near record setting, their desire to play in a particular city makes no difference.

But this isn't just an issue with the White Sox. He always wanted to go to the Yankees over ALL other teams. This includes the Phillies and the Dodgers and all of the other teams. It's not be cause the Sox are irrelevant, it's because he WANTED to go to the Yankees.

I still don't understand the team getting roasted part. If the Sox offered the most money, why are the fans going to be upset? It will be a case of Machado always wanting to sign with the Yankees and his agent used the White Sox and Phillies to drive up the price. Why are the fans going to be angry with the White Sox? They tried to hard? They were willing to sign him to a record breaking deal?

It could mean that Machado was truthful when he said he always wanted to play for the Yankees and no offer from the Sox, Phillies or Dodgers would change his mind.

The only way this makes any difference is if the players agree to a cap where its agreed that the players get a percentage of the revenue. Until that time, the players get what is negotiated in the individual contracts. Maybe this will be the owners push during the next CBA.

One word: injury. A 10 year deal with player opt outs gives a guarantee if injuries occur but allow them to get a better deal if they career goes well.

The injuries were also to different tendons with drastically different structures. Burgers injury has a really good success rate, although the second one throws a variable there. Mitchell's was to a tendon which is important to the stability of the foot and would cause problems with any running or planting the foot. His was much more serious.
