Update: Machado met with Sox
At least another 7 pages of how the Sox FO screwed up another chance to assist them in getting Machado because it didn't cost the Phillies much to acquire Yonder.

Sox trade for Yonder Alonso; Alex Call to CLE
They spent 50 on Robert. Your assumption of 2021 is off but Robert should be ready.

Sox trade for Yonder Alonso; Alex Call to CLE
Absolutely. If they aren't willing to break records, they wouldn't even be in the conversation. That's true for all the teams mentioned.

Sox trade for Yonder Alonso; Alex Call to CLE
Of course it is. However, believe it or not that can't control everything especially the player. If a player really has a preferred destination there is nothing they can do about it. As I stated before, maybe its Chicago they have a problem with. Many posters on here stated they would prefer other cities. Blaming the FO for things out of their control is just looking to blame them. I know you dont like the FO and management and it's just another way to blame them. Over the summer you blamed them for not offering the money and that is the reason because players only care about the most money. Now that the Sox are offering the most money, you are finding ways to blame them again. If the offer falls short, I'll agree with you. But the players states they really wanted to play elsewhere for some other reasons, I'll disagree

Sox trade for Yonder Alonso; Alex Call to CLE
This still doesn't make sense. You are assuming the reason they dont pick the Sox is purely related to the team. This isn't necessarily true. in the case of Machado, if he goes to the Yankees its could because he has always wanted to play there and prefers the east coast. For harper it could be the marketing opportunities on LA, which is more of against the city than the team. Until you see the situation you cant just say it's making the team a laughingstock.

Sox trade for Yonder Alonso; Alex Call to CLE
I guess since people are more concerned about how others view them as opposed to really trying to improve the team. It seems the issue is the sox outing themselves out their and really trying to acquire one of these guys, then failing. Its better than not trying at all in my view, but some can turn trying for the golden ring a negative.

The only exception would be the Yankees. He has always said, he would like to play there. The question is how much of a discount does that equate to

There have been quotes that he prefers to stay at SS. How strong that preference is, will be the question.

I'm not saying you don't do it. I fact I'm I favor of it. It os just a concern when negotiating the contracts with opt outs and options and such. You have to expect decline toward the end of 10 year deals although these 2 will be going enough that it shouldn't be as debilitating as some long term deals.

Update per Heyman: White Sox one of 3 teams meeting Machado
The issue isn't 2019-2023. The issue is can they afford that from 2023-2029 when their young prospects start to hit arbitration years. If they prospects produce to make them competitive, they will be getting expensive starting in 2023.
