Indians sign Edwin Encarnacion
QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 08:36 PM) He turned down 4/$80m from the Jays. Him and Bautista both screwed themselves. That's pretty much what he got from cleveland with a guaranteed playoff run.

QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 07:49 PM) EE to the Indians. Now the Astros will be desperate. This ought to shake things up a bit.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 07:49 PM) Fellas, this is the best place to find some of the web's best baseball conspiracies. Like trying to have a discussion with my doctoral students I wish I was kidding.

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 07:26 PM) Common belief was they drafted safe college pitchers so they could use them as trade bait Yeah, poor draft philosophy.

New BA White Sox Top Ten
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 07:04 PM) The Broadway, McCulloch, Ring and Poreda picks will go down as the most questionable...it felt like at that time, because we needed "immediate impact/developed" collegiate players, we almost always went in this direction. And part of it was about saving money, or at least having almost all of the revenues redirected to the major league roster. I guess the Anderson one is arguable. Compared to Kinsler, he was considered the "toolbox" guy, and was drafted accordingly. Torii Hunter Lite, etc. Brian was "polished" from a standpoint that he was able to put up good numbers in the PAC-10, but not at all in the sense that he relied on physical tools and didn't have a refined/professional approach, never mastered the psychological side of dealing with failure, etc. He was just more concerned about chasing the "honies" than improving his game.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 07:40 PM) Well, that's one way of speculating about it. My speculation is that Q's price started just a tick below Sale's and now with all the interest is at an equal place. What the f*** do I know thou? As much as any of us. We're all just bored and making s@#t up with maybe a little educated guessing.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 07:30 PM) The problem for the Astros is even if they decide to now acquiesce to the Tucker-Martes-Musgrove demand the Pirates or Yankees are both in positions to easily beat that deal. The cost for Houston now likely either (a) includes Bregman or (b) 5 prospects of the Sox choice. The market for Quintana after appearing to stagnate for almost two weeks has now exploded. Pretty much every team that is even thinking of contending in 2017 is picking up the phone. The Pirates and Yankees flat have better pieces than Houston to offer, and if one them becomes a truly motivated buyer there is almost nothing Houston can do (short of Bregman) to get Quintana. I don't think Musgrove will be involved. All of the teams are trying to make a playoff push. They aren't going to trade players they are counting on for the MLB roster. That's why the Sox settled for Moncada and why turner was not available. It's also why Meadows won't happen if the pirates are still trying to trade McCutchen.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 05:45 PM) Seems to me that there is more reported interest in Q than Sale. Reported is the key word there. How cool would it be to get near equal value or more. I think there are more teams because the price isn't as high.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 04:50 PM) Well we could start Tilson & Liriano in CF & RF and then DH Avi. Just depends which guys you want to give at-bats to. That's fine. Let them all rotate positions to get AB's and see if they have in any of them.

New BA White Sox Top Ten
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 04:23 PM) It was the KW multi-sport star athlete (especially football players) way. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandon_Jacobs_(baseball) Here's yet another player who just happens to be African American and has ties to Auburn football (that we traded for.) I suppose I could have included Borchard, Brian Anderson and Engel as part of the same strategy...but, other than perhaps Engel, they don't fit that mold of the past 5-7 years, which also includes Tim Anderson. So...going back to Brian Anderson, what other toolsy white players did we draft? (Josh Fields, by the way, was never close to this definition despite having played football.) No it wasn't. For year's he drafted safe college players who never had a high ceiling ie, Broadway, McCullough. After these didn't work the sox shifted draft strategies and went with the "toolsy" athlete but not baseball player. Borchard definitely was not the "toolsy" athlete. He was a power hitter only. Anderson was not the "toolsy" athlete he was considered a fairly polished college OF. KW has had many different types of draft philosphies during his tenure at GM becuase it was the organization philosophy at the time. You are just looking at the latest one before this last draft where they switched again to the OBP guys.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 04:31 PM) Assuming no more moves, this how I think our lineup would shake out: 1B: Abreu 2B: Lawrie SS: Anderson 3B: Frazier LF: Cabrera CF: Tilson/Liriano RF: Garcia DH: Davidson Not that I agree with it, but I think they plan on giving Avi one last shot in RF. And with Melky unlikely to be moved, I don't see an everyday spot for both Tilson & Liriano. Why not? They are basically trying to lose next year anyway. It's not like they have anyone else to audition there.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 04:04 PM) Tilson, May, Engel. Any wonder why the Sox reportedly insist on Meadows being apart of the return for Q? The Sox have three legit 4th outfielders but no starting center fielder. Tells me the Sox have a plan and know where their weaknesses are. Anyway. I like the recent rumor of Meadows/Glasnow + Bell or Newman. If the rumor is true then all I can say is what's the hold up! Are you kidding me. The guy has a career 1.000 OPS. He is a can't miss player.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 03:12 PM) That farm system would be absolutely locked and loaded to compete in the next few years Add in some other shrewd moves and/or free agent signings and you are looking at a playoff team if things go well 1) Rodon 2) Glasnow 3) Giolito 4) Kopech 5) Lopez Pen arm possibilities (or other starters): Burdi, Dunning, Stephens, Adams, Fulmer, Hansen, Clark, Cooper C- Collins (fingers crossed) 1B - Abreu and/or Bell 2B - Moncada and/or Newman SS - Anderson 3B - ? OF- Meadows OF- Basabe OF- Tilson? DH - ? As a Sox fan you can dream of a scenario like this... God forbid anyone else in our system pans out like Call, Fisher, Engel, Michalczewski, Schnurbusch, etc. you shouldn't count on all of them being good MLB players. Many of them will not.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 02:41 PM) Agreed. With McCutchen, that lineup is still a really good lineup. Add a really good lineup to a really good rotation and they can be thinking of possibly winning the division or hosting a wild card game. I agree. The whole purpose of the trade would be to improve the team to make the playoffs. I don't see losing McCutchen and his replacement in one deal making sense for them even with improvement of the pitching with Q.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 01:56 PM) Yeah, still far less then he'd get on the open market. Very true. But that has no bearing as to why the pirates would want to acquire him now.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 01:21 PM) This. The number of the people that don't understand Abreu's contract situation, especially after what he just agreed to for his 2017 salary, is staggering. Adding Abreu even at arb prices will increase the payroll especially when they have Bell really cheap already. under 1 mil

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 01:20 PM) Abreu won't be expensive (relatively of course) until he's a free agent. Don't let the word arbitration scare you, he's not going to make much more than his original 6 year contract called for even he goes through arb 2 more times. I was using the pirates view of expensive. I think it would start to get pricey for them especially if they keep the team as is and add Q.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (beautox @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 12:58 PM) Honestly I know Hahn doesn't want to "bundle" per se but I would be open to moving both Q + Abreu + MiGo to the pirates for a package like Glasnow/Meadows/Bell/Hayes/Diaz/Escobar/Hearn steamer projects 7.4 wins out of that trio Abreu - 2.1 Quintana - 4.2 Gonzalez - 1.1 and there is still upside with all three of them. Pirates would be adding about 20mil in salary for all three though. I don't think a pirates team that depends heavily on the farm system due to a limited budget is going to trade anyone for Abreu and Gonzalez. One will get expensive soon, then other can be found cheaply without giving any players up.

Predict thy Numbers
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 10:22 AM) Rodon really improved his walk rate in 2016 (2.9 BB/9) vs. 2015 (4.6 BB/9). His 3.91 SIERA was 25th best of qualified MLB starting pitchers. I really think he takes the next step forward this year and breaks out Part of it is the slowly building up of innings. He couldn't just go from a college level of innings pitched to 200 in the MLB. He is on pace to go 190-200 this year as long as he doesn't walk too many and get pulled early in games.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 03:37 AM) To be fair Caulfield was responding to a post of mine where I said , "Meadows has to be the headliner. Not only that but I was thinking Q could require a bigger haul than Sale since he has 1 more year and is cheaper than Sale. Plus the Sale trade had the #1 prospect in baseball who cost the Red Sox around $64M which maybe Hahn took into consideration as far as valuations go." Throw in the fact that Pittsburgh as a small market team cannot compete with the free agent money and you kind of have them bent over the proverbial negotiation table . But still it's mostly the extra year of control and the cheaper contract. I hear what you're saying. I just don't think it will play out that way. I'll be shocked if the trade Q and the prospects are equal to or greater than the haul for Sale. However, it's not like I've never been wrong before, my wife and kids constantly remind me of that.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 09:44 PM) Looking at the month of September over the last two seasons, in '16 ERA 4.35 , in '15 ERA 4.34. Sale has been fading down the stretch which doesn't bode well heading into the playoffs. This is one of the reasons I had preferred to keep Q over Sale. I don't mean to kick anyone's puppy but if Sale continues fading in September, he may end up pitching more like David Price in the playoffs. That's true. however, he still has a better chance of getting the team there. It could be he just interest. Who knows maybe he would could turn it on in the playoffs. The White Sox never gave him the chance. Can you imagine the Red Sox fans if they make it to the playoffs but both Price and sale fall apart? I might pay to watch the fans explode.
