QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 10:08 AM) They want to send the poor brown and black people to fight their wars while they are at home in their mansions drinking a nice aged scotch, neat of course! So as with cauldfield, you assume every conservative is a rich, good for nothing politician? Is the current military made of all draftees?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 05:50 AM) Do you think all the die-hard Republicans in this thread are volunteering to send their sons and daughters to fight against ISIS? Funny how that works. Last time they did a survey, it was something like only 3 or 4 children of Congressmen/wmen or Senators were in active duty military service. You tell your children the have to join the military and go fight a war? Personally, I allow my children to make their own choices. Are you assuming every Republican is a Congressman? I have a number of relatives in the military.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 13, 2016 -> 09:30 AM) But what they did was trade "unproven prospects" for ONE YEAR of a major league pitcher; and this was a 73 win team that no matter how many "proven veterans" were stacked onto the team was unlikely to contend. That's the kind of move that 82-86 win teams make to get over the top. Not 73 win teams that need to build a core. Under this approach, Hahn, were he the GM of the Giants, would have traded away 1/2 of his all-star infield. Brandon Crawford didn't hit a lick his first THREE years with the Giants. And Caufield is right...the Sox really don't give non-highly touted prospects much of a chance. Micah was done after 3 weeks; couldn't wait to move Tracye and Semien. Saladino and Sanchez got what have to be considered lengthy auditions for this organization (but not for others) and were jettisoned back to utility or AAA roles. Cooper has jettisoned pitchers who can pitch (but who struggled in their 3 appearance auditions). This is not the way to build an organization. Yes, the Sox had some middle infield excess (still do really). So why not use it to get, say, a young OF? That's how we got Eaton...some young starting pitching for a YOUNG outfielder. The Giants are a good team to emulate. Constantly improving their organization. Never have the touted systems, but accurately evaluate their own players and are willing to develop them. The Whitesox have a long way to go re talent evaluation and development and organization building. I still make that trade. By all accounts if he had pitched well, they would have had an extension. Either way I still make the deal for proven pitching everytime, especially when they think they have a good shot at an extension.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 1, 2016 -> 02:13 AM) I understand what many of you like ptatc is saying. So it costs the hospitals money? Well don't have interns then. I know I'm inflexible on my opinion here, but I think a place of business that expects interns to report for duty and do actual work should pay the interns some money. It doesn't have to be more than minimum wage by a dollar or two, but don't have an internship program if you don't pay anything. The fact you get a handful of credit hours is worth something, yes it is. I just think in a great country like America everybody who does work for a company that actually benefits the company should make a few cents doing it. I mean I worked for a golf course several summers as a high school and college kid. They could have refused to pay me and instead given me all the free golf and swimming my heart desired. If I loved golf I guess I probably would do it, but it would be wrong of the golf course even though that's worth a lot of money in green fees. What free golf is is a nice perk for employees but thankfully they paid me and I got to keep my tips, too. Two issues here. 1) do you really want someone practicing medicine on you who hasn't been mentored and interned in a clinic? 2) It is mandated by the Department of Education that these student have internships with licensed professionals so the can apply what they learned in school on real patients before they treat patients by themselves without supervision.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 12, 2016 -> 10:36 PM) I don't disagree with the assessment Anderson is the better SS and has MORE potential (at that particular position) than Semien. That's not the debate. It's whether Semien could have played 2B or 3B....which would have preserved the longer window of contention. That clocked started ticking as soon as Frazier was brought on board, along with Melky's contract expiring. Even if they didn't sign either player to an extension (freeing up $25-30 million), it's not going to be easy to fill those TWO holes in the free agency market in 2017-18. With how things are trending financially, you get two second tier FA's at overpriced rates or you really overpay for one superstar type (like Cespedes this year) and try to fight to fill in the other holes for a pittance. I'm also not questioning what they gave up to acquire Lawrie. It was a risk worth taking, and nobody wanted to see Sanchez given the starting job, at least not many. (Now you can debate whether Saladino could hold down 2B and do it better than Lawrie, but there's not much evidence to support that...because Saladino's seeing favorable match-ups in his part-time work and Lawrie has already put up some quite strong WAR years at a young age at the big league level). I guess we'll see how it all plays out....whether Saladino (as a starter/supersub), Semien, Sanchez, Thompson and Montas would have given them a better chance to win (or make further trades) than what they have right now. You can also argue that Phegley's bat would have come in quite handy this year. I would still trade unproven prospects for proven MLB pitching. If the A's really wanted Semien, so be it. He was unproven and the Sox needed a RHP starter to go with Sale, Q and Rodon.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 12, 2016 -> 08:39 PM) Do I really need to write that "everyone knows how the White Sox operate when it comes to young players, that it's clear they have given up on Marcus Semien as an everyday player and might as well get something of value back for him?" Or since you need to trade talent to get talent, the could afford to lose Semien because they had a player they liked better in Anderson right behind him. I think i like Anderson better too.

Exclusive interview with Nick Hostetler - review of the 2016 draft

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 11, 2016 -> 08:22 AM) Our Brian got an exclusive 1-on-1 interview with Scouting Director Nick Hostetler, to do a sort of post-op review of the 2016 draft for the White Sox. There is some good insight in here, in fact a couple surprises as well. Here's the interview article. This is really good stuff. Excellent interview and write up! -
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 9, 2016 -> 05:54 PM) That's because in the case of Scott Carroll part of his value is the fact that he hasn't pitched that much. The more the two of them pitch, the bigger the discrepancy gets. This is not to mention that WAR very nicely handles the case of a guy who pitched just a couple innings–he can't do much either way in such little time. It's a counting stat, not a pure prediction of whether Scott Carroll or Chris Sale would be better given the same amount of playing time. It's like saying "I can't believe Tim Anderson is only 2 RBI better than JB Shuck." Well, you need some context to decide what it all means, especially playing time. I aas just using Scott Carroll as an example of a 6 year minor league guy or ST invitee for the replacement representative. I didn't even look for his actual WAR. The point is that Chris Sale or Quintana two of the highest WAR pitchers in the league are only 3 games better than any available 6 year minor league guy like Scott Carroll.
-
QUOTE (shysocks @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 03:21 PM) WAR is definitely an attempt to guess how many wins a player is worth in the standings. One goal of the WAR model is to correlate MLB teams' total WAR with their winning % as closely as possible. By and large it does a pretty good job of this. There is always error because the inputs of WAR tend to ignore the order in which things happen on the field, which will swing the results from what they "should" be. So yes, it is essentially saying that if you took away Q and inserted Carroll or whoever, the Sox would be 41-44 right now. 3 WAR doesn't seem like that much, but consider a few things. 1. We're only about halfway into the season. 2. Q has only played in 17 games. He is only active for part of each game he starts. 3. Pitchers cannot win games by themselves (Q is all too familiar with this concept). Q's innings pitched this year amount to about 12 full games. Let's say a pitcher of his talent level "should" have a 7-5 record. Doesn't replacing that with 4-9 make that 3 WAR seem a lot more significant? (As an aside, I wanna drone on about the third point. Think of a player's performance on a probability continuum. A pitcher has a certain range of outcomes in which his outings are likely to turn out. A couple will be much better, a couple will be much worse, but most might cluster around a certain number of innings and runs. In Q's case, it's 6 or 7 innings and 1 or 2 runs. For a replacement player, it might be 5 innings and 3 runs or something, but he also could go out and throw seven shutout innings too. A good chunk of their bell curves are gonna overlap. We can expect less from Carroll on a given day but he would not be guaranteed to pitch worse than Q, and it would not be a guaranteed loss. The offense has the same sliding performance, and so does the bullpen. Maybe the team would have scored 11 runs that day regardless of who was pitching. Maybe the bullpen comes on and gives up 7 anyway. Thinking in these terms helps me appreciate how many players can have an impact on every game and why 6 WAR over a full season is a huge number.) While this is true the fact remains that by WAR Scott Carroll is less than 3 ganes worse than Chris Sale. I just don't buy it.

Multiple Dallas police officers shot at anti-police protest
ptatc replied to LittleHurt05's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 02:41 PM) From what I am reading federal officials have determined he was the only shooter. Maybe others assisted but he seems to be the only guy shooting. With that being said its pretty remarkable that he was able to go into combat with a police force on the ground without being shot himself and then get up to an elevated level and start firing away as well. Dallas: "Home of the Single Shooter Conspiracy." -
QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 02:34 PM) I dont think WAR is defined as this though. Is it? Here is the example from fangraphs: “If this player got injured and their team had to replace them with a minor leaguer or someone from their bench, how much value would the team be losing?” Here is the example from baseball reference: Replacement level players, by their very definition, are players easy to obtain when a starter goes down. These are the players who receive non-roster invites at the start of the year, or the players who are 6-year minor league free agents.

Multiple Dallas police officers shot at anti-police protest

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 02:10 PM) There is beyond a shadow of doubt, multiple shooters. It would seems like it. I know they have other suspects in custody but they haven't said if they are shooting suspects or accomplice type suspects. -
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 08:53 PM) Just the fact that Marco Estrada made it onto the team before Q should tell you a lot about how disrespected Quintana is. According to fangraphs Quintana has the second highest WAR for pitchers in the AL at 3.1. So theoretically he is the second best pitcher in the AL by this measure. Here is the conceptual problem I have with WAR. Supposedly, WAR is Wins Above Replacement where the replacement is any guy from AAA. Let's use a decent pitcher like Scott Carroll. This stat tells me that the White Sox will only have 3 more win from the contributions of Quintana as opposed to Carroll. Common sense wise that just doesn't make sense between a AAA pitcher and the second best pitcher in the AL.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 12:47 PM) Are you guys really going to turn this thread into a liberal/neocon pissing contest? Really? Yeah, it's like the other poster said about social media, nearly all of the people who here are far to one side or the other. Everything boils down to right or left. It's similar to election season when I listen to XM on america right and america left. They each take the same event and really spin in to their own view. It's quite entertaining. -

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 8, 2016 -> 11:36 AM) How can this have "so little impact" on an organization you always *claim* operates under very limited resources? You should just have a canned reponse to all post "JR sucks and will not allow this team to be good."

QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 06:42 PM) I have a 3rd interview with a financial firm 5 days from today. I have to get 60 people to fill out an 8-question survey prior to the 3rd interview. I have about 20 completed. Would anyone be interested in letting me PM them with a quick 8 questions? It'd be appreciated! EDIT: I know the perception is since it's a financial firm that 1. it's a scam to get personal info and 2. i'm going to ask questions about your personal financial situations. 1. I'm really doing this and 2. there's nothing in there about anything money related. I'm game. Send away.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 12:07 PM) An entirely valid question in reply though is whether he would have been more successful developing that 3rd pitch in AA and AAA for the last season+. Right now he has to pitch to win games because the White Sox are trying to win games and he's the #3 starter on a team that tells itself they're a contender. He cannot afford to give up a home run on his worst pitch, or walk the bases loaded because he is working on that 3rd pitch. No one cares if Charlotte or Birmingham lose a game because he throws too many changeups. It is certainly possible to develop a 3rd pitch at the big league level in the offseason or throwing sessions, but that may not work for everyone. So far it has not worked for Rodon, and the organization seems to have bet that it would. The other issue is that he has always had poor command so will it ever get any better? Maybe the Sox just decided that this is what he is and they'll live with it. As I said when he was drafted, his mechanics will lead to command issues and inconsistency. I don't think the last start is much to worry about he looked tired and the break coming up will help that.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 12:12 PM) http://www.southsidesox.com/2016/7/7/12116...wn-out-of-order Really good article that looks at Burdi, Fulmer and Adams...and how these last few days have affected their progression in the Sox system. Argues for Fulmer to the pen, holding back on rushing Burdi (for now) and concern that the Adams injury will slow down potential trade talks. Also notes we asked the Yankees about Gary Sanchez and got nowhere because of expected sky high asking price. The issue with these articles is that they don't know the players well enough to know if they are ready to handle the progression. They really need to see the players day in and day out to know if they can handle it. Can fulmer go out there and pitch every other day and keep his arm sharp? Was Burdi just overthrowing because he was excited, was the mound different in that ballpark and he didn't have time to get used to it. He has never shown a control issue in the past.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 11:02 AM) I always thought Beckham's progress was somewhat thwarted by all of the muscle he put on after he had been called up. In 2009 when he first came up and had the success he had that season, he was far less muscular than he started to be in subsequent seasons. Whatever workout regimens he was on during the offseasons after 2009 led him to put a lot of bulk on his frame, and I always wondered if that somehow negatively impacted his swing, as in, maybe slowing it down. I don't know. Just seemed like all of the muscle didn't serve him well. Could be. Different players react differently when their body changes. Sometimes it's the mental part of the physical change as well, "I bulked up so now I'm a power hitter."

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 12:36 AM) I hope the Cubs score 10 runs in the first inning tomorrow and force the Braves to burn through their bullpen. I was thinking a close 20 inning game to burn the pen.

QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 09:28 AM) This likely means in August or September. Not a big deal. Not comparing him to Urias with the Dodgers but if/when he comes up it will be in the relievers role because of an innings cap. I am completely fine with this. Let him get a taste of the majors -- plus he should have enough plus stuff out of the bullpen that I'd actually prefer him over some of our guys. I really, really, really never understand this narrative that you "rush" someone. People act like baseball is all psychology. Gordon Beckham didn't suck after year one because he was mentally beat up. He sucked for a plethra of reasons involving his swing and not adjusting to pitchers. Fulmer throws a ball for a living. He's either going to have it or not. Coming up to the majors for a few months in the pen when he's on an innings limit isn't going to change a thing in his development. Development of a prospect is a large part psychological in all sports. Many failed athletes have the physical talent but being able to handle the mental aspect may make or break them. This is especially true in baseball where failure is more part of the game than any other sport. The mental adjustment is key to success. For some it comes easily for other, not so much. In Beckham s case the league adjusted to what he was doing early on and he could never make the subsequent adjustment.
