Hanging with Mr. Cooper... Daniel Cabrera non-tendered
ptatc replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 09:52 PM) Chris Capuano had the 2nd ligament replacement (Tommy John) surgery of his career in mid May, I doubt he'll be a factor for anyone this season. Chuck James had rotator cuff and labrum surgery in September so he'll be worthless until August at the earliest. He's also a big time flyball pitcher so he'd be a bad fit even if healthy. He should be ready to start throwing in Feb. He should pitch most of the season for someone. -
QUOTE (shakes @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 03:33 PM) I think a stress fracture will heal by spring training. This isn't a career ending injury or anything. they can be depnding on where it is and the health of the bone. They should heal within 4-8 weeks. We are pushing that time frame now. If it is still an issue the bone density and health of the bone needs to be in question.

QUOTE (rangercal @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 10:30 AM) If it's not broke, fix it? When you need more money, change the uniforms so all of the idiot "Red Sox nation" will run out like lemmings to buy the new merchandise.

QUOTE (Downtown518 @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 10:27 AM) II was wondering if anyone could recommend any quality baseball related books, in any genre, to give as a gift this Christmas. If it helps any, the possible recipient is a varsity coach and a filthy Cubs fan…. Thanks in advance! One of my favorites is the biography of Moe Berg. You combine baseball and a spy novel. It's not for general baseball but it's a good read.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 12:16 AM) Rock pretty much summed it up with his last post. I think I'm going to roll with Kenny and his crew over anybody from this board when it comes to scouting players. this is the way it should be. This is what they do for a living and have been fairly successful at it. Everyone can have an opinion and base it on whatever they wish. However, there is a difference between an informed opinion and an uniformed one. This is where the discussionon the board start. Also, everyone has different views on how to interpret the information. That is what's great about baseball. I go to conferences and sit with "experts" in the biomechanics field and there are many different theories on pitching mechanics. They all have advantages and disadvantages. This is why discussion boards are fun until the name calling starts. Everyone has their own views most of which have some merit and you can learn alot if you have an open mind.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 10:25 PM) What team are you the scout for? i'm not a scout but most of research is analyzing pitching mechanics and a great deal of my work experience is rehabbing injured pitchers and other athlets. I've worked with teams in most major sports at a variety of levels from children to the olympic level. I've seen enough ofthem to get a good idea what I'm looking at. Of course, none of it is pure science, but actually working with the athlete you get a good clue about them. As I said before you would be making a mistake to ignore any aspect of evaluationas they all have their benefits and have their own value.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 09:09 PM) You do realize that it’s irrational to make judgments on players based on seeing him once, right? It’s equally irrational to discount the value of what the player has done throughout the year. How can you say stats are meaningless? I never said stats are meaningless. I said I wouldn't pass judgement on a players ability and project his future performance based on numbers alone. Also, he said that he saw him multiple times not just once. But if you want to make extreme arguement while calling me irrational, I would take someone seeing a player once in the minors over versus looking only at the numbers. If i had only those two choices. Heres why. By watching someones mechanics and how he carries himself I can get a better idea of his future projection. Looking at numbers I can't see his mechanics, confidence and projectability. He can go 0-4 and have hit the ball hard or see that he has the confidence to overcome the adversity. You don't see that in numbers. If I am going to make a judgement on a player I watch them multiple times and look at the numbers but lean more towards what I see.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 04:27 PM) You must think highly of Lillibridge?! Atlanta thought highly enough of him to contemplate trading Escobar and keeping him.

Rumor: Yankees to trade M. Cabrera to Brew Crew for Cameron
ptatc replied to LittleHurt05's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 04:11 PM) It's amazing how many steroid guys the Yankees have had through the years, add another one to the list. Well they do pay them the best so the players can afford it. Maybe that's the Yankee way, pay them the most so they can get the best illegal PEDs -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 03:03 PM) More importantly, when did he become a pro scout? lol. I've never seen a poster from a message board put so much stock into "Well, I saw him in person. I know for a fact he sucksssssssssss" as much as he is. I don't necessarily agree with everything he says but at least he makes a judgement after seeing the player as opposed to some posters judging players only through numbers without seeing them in person.

Angels May Consider Trading For Dye or Paulie
ptatc replied to Kenny Hates Prospects's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 03:51 PM) Personally I'd rather trade Paulie than Dye, but either is fine. I hope Paulie gets his head out of his ass this upcoming season. Who would be PK's replacement? I don't think Abreu would be a fit then. We would probably get more for Dye unless the Angels lose out on Tex and they REALLY need a 1B. -
QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 12:55 PM) Defensively though, I think people will see that his arm is not as impressive as they thought when he's making the throw from SS. Tad Iguchi/Cintron/Big Mack made Alexie look like he had a canon from 2nd (he does have a good arm, but not absolutely top notch caliber). I think at SS he'll have a better arm than Cabrera, but a worse arm than Uribe. Some of off balance throws from deep CF make me think his arm is plenty strong.

QUOTE (almagest @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 02:59 PM) Sometimes the posts on this board leave me speechless. Get used to it. every year it's the same thing around this time. We don't spend enough money or We don't make good trades or We traded the wrong prospect because we gave up our good players and got nothing in return or JR doesn't care about the team we won't win AGAIN until he sells it or and this is my favorite We trade to cut costs because JR won't spend money and KW could have gotten more in return for those players and we will finish in last. It's the same every off season. I can't wait for the four greatest words in the English language: pitchers and catchers report
-
QUOTE (Wanne @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 09:14 PM) If we are in full payroll slash mode...it wouldn't surprise me to hear the Paulie to the Halos rumor pop up again if Teixiera bolts for the Nats or wherever. Depending on what we get back with that (if)...maybe we'd see JD at 1B...or even see a 1B mitt in Fields bag. I think KW is going to wait to see where all of the FAs go and then work trades for Dye or Paulie with the teams that lose out. He will be in a good position to get what he wants at that time.

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 08:30 PM) The people who saw him in the Internantional League were stunned by how weak his bat was. Again the performance was weak this past year due to injuries and such but the people I've talked to think he will be a pretty good major league hitter. Maybe they were stunned by the weak bat due to his injuries and being shuttled around.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 07:52 PM) Let's hope he's not. No offense, but everyone looks good on their highlight videos. People that saw him live last year thought he was one of the worst hitters in the league. thats not what I've heard. I heard he had a bad year due to injuries and such but the talent is there. The people that I've talked to thought he could be a pretty good hitter in the majors.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 07:49 PM) I think the leadoff position is going to be filled by the CF position, and let's hope it's not Taveras. I agree. I think that will be KW's lone pickup for the rest of the offseason. Although I have no idea who it will be.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 02:20 PM) They also had them making a profit in 2007. If they had lost money that season, I don't think you would have seen the contracts handed out for Linebrink, and Dotel nor the offers for Hunter and Fukudome. I'm not saying they made or lost money, I didn't see the article. I'm just saying that franchise value has nothing to do with operating capital. The partners of the White sox (of which JR owns around 10%) will make money when they sell it. However, an increase in the value of the franchise does not mean they made a profit last year.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 02:12 PM) KW wanted to give him an extension before he ever took the field with the Sox, but OC wasn't interested. I still would love to know what kind of contract KW was talking about or had in mind. We got lucky with OC's big ego there. He would've been tough to move in this market.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 02:17 PM) Its better than giving up your top prospect for a guy with a screw in his right elbow, but K-Rod was ridden hard last season. The only thing that may save him from a dissappointing 2009 IMO, is the move to the NL. I totally agree. you may have made a bad investment in a guy if he breaks down but you didn't hurt future growth of the team as much.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 02:02 PM) According to Forbes, the White Sox pulled a profit in 2007. In fact, the value of the team in their estimation rose $60 million even after a disasterous 2007 season.Haven't heard anything about 2008, but it is way too early to determine what is going on. The chances of the payroll being $45 or even $30 million lower in 2009 is very slim IMO. If it turns out it is, then the eyebrows should be raised, especially season ticketholders who had money held hostage and were basically forced to accept price increases without knowing the team intended to spend that much less on its product. The value of the team is meaningless unless the team is sold. It does not factor in the money flow in or out of the organization unless JR used the value of the team as equity to borrow against the value. you cannot pay a player with the value of the franchise. It needs to be the revenue that is generated.

QUOTE (ChiSox420* @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 10:43 PM) Long time reader but first post so here we go..... I see Matt Kemp as not only an better CFer then what we have had recently(Swisher, Griffey) along with a feasible leadoff man(anything is better then jerry owens)... and cheap for now... Before recent talk of Casey Blake signing back with the Dodgers I was thinking a package built around Fields... obv now that would probably not be the starting point... So what everyone think it would take and worth it? Hes gonna be a STUD....!!!! Welcome to the Board!!!

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 09:56 PM) I liked the Quentin trade. They are 2 very different players. Quentin still hit the crap out of the ball in AAA in 2007. I get it. Every minor league position player KW acquires will be like Quentin. Every Cuban KW signs will be like Ramirez. Every minor league pitcher KW trades for will be like Floyd. that would be like saying: OK I get it. Everyone who has a bad statistical year after being successful will always suck. He will never be able to rebound. Just because someone has a bad season doesn't mean they will not be successful. I'm not saying he will be successful but there's no need to be so down on a player because he was highly thought of and had a poor season.

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 09:50 PM) Wow, how can JD be brought back after a comment like this is out there? Must mean he's out the door. If not, then he sure wont feel wanted around here, especially after a statistical year like his 07-08. Statistical, mind you...but still that's harsh. KW says every year that all players may be traded for the right deal. He'll say it's highly unlikely and somebody would need to "wow" him with the offer but this is nothing new.

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 05:00 PM) Over/Under on how long Hawk talks about his ability to take a base on a ball on the dirt? I'm giving it 3 more seasons. But dadgumit, Ozzie Guillen is the best I've evey seen at it, Feisty.
