  1. QUOTE (Greenman @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 02:10 AM) Orton is bigger than Edge He seems like he is approaching the Stone Cold status of being a "Heel" yet the fans like him. Orton isn't getting as much boos and hate as he use to. I think he is the best thing they got, and recently it feels like WWE agrees because he is getting all of the favorable decisions thrown his way. I fully expect him to beat Trips clean at Mania as well. HA! RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT. Try beating the unbeatable John Cena by cashing in Money in the Bank at the best possible time and having the crowd wildly cheer you (as a heel), then see the biggest ratings spike for Raw in 10 years, and then we'll talk. I'm sorry, but there's still a lot of people who find Orton's mic skills incredibly boring - never mind all the heat he lost when he turned face and HHH killed him in all their rematches.
  2. I would like to take issue with the above premise that Reagan was a good president. If creating unprecedented deficits, wrecking the economic structure of the country, spending like a drunken sailor, and expanding the federal government, all while contributing to high unemployment is a good President, then I agree. If not, then sorry - he was pretty bad.
  3. QUOTE (Texsox @ Feb 12, 2009 -> 10:47 AM) slaves, recent immigrants, high school students, braceros. But more importantly, who is going to work them now? Do you remember President Reagan? His answer was amnesty in 1986. Twenty years later, the same issue faces us. It's supply and demand. After going to US schools for 12 years, are we going to tell our children they can be migrant farms workers? Bus boys? The lowest rung of the economic ladder has been a start for immigrants throughout our history. It is only recently that we have embraced immigrants as Doctors and other professionals and demanded that our children be allowed to work for them at minimum wage. Unemployment is through the roof - why should we allow non-citizens to have a job when citizens need one? This just doesn't make sense to me. also, I don't know about southern Texas, but Los Angeles has too many people in it. Think about how much nicer everything would be if 30% of the population suddenly weren't there. Like that one day here everyone took the day off to have a rally for the illegals - there was no one on the freeways and it was so easy to drive places and go shopping. I'd love that to be the norm.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 14, 2009 -> 09:50 AM) I watched Do The Right Thing for the first time yesterday. After watching it, I honestly can't see Spike Lee's anger at not being nominated for Best Picture. Also, Danny Aiello was great it in. Well, it's that whole 15 years later, which is the more important film argument. The other nominees: Born on the Fourth of July, Dead Poets Society, Driving Miss Daisy, Field of Dreams, My Left Foot. I'd take Do the Right Thing over Driving Miss Daisy (which won - and possibly also pissed off Lee, for its subservient Uncle Tom-like Danny Glover character), and My Left Foot. We could argue about whether it's a better film than Fourth of July, Dead Poets Society, and Field of Dreams - it's certainly, from an academic perspective, a more important film than those - but it deserves to be in that group to even have the conversation.
  5. QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 17, 2009 -> 08:19 AM) Sorry guys. Orton is the biggest heel the E has had in years. Um.......Edge? And to whoever above, Vickie is a HEAT MACHINE. She pushes all the right buttons.
  6. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 07:59 AM) No Age is so awesome. I still find songs on nouns a year later to fall in love with. Los Angeles represent!
  7. I agree, good ppv. Usually the Mania card is totally predictable at this point, but this year it's not, and I salute them. Good booking (so far.) I'm not a huge fan of Cena's work. but he's a good guy backstage from what I hear, so I hope he's not injured. Orton/HHH for the WWE belt?
  8. QUOTE (Texsox @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 10:53 AM) Bottom line, those jobs that the lowest skilled immigrants (legal and illegal) take are not in high demand by people that were born and raised in the US. That's just not true. Who do you think did those jobs before the illegals got here?

QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 08:50 AM) And a lot of people would disagree, people who have a lot of 'experience' with acting. Look Rourke will probably win the Oscar. All I'm saying is it might be the best performnace this year, I'll buy an argument for that, but to say it's great, I don't know. I was not moved, didn't care too much for his character and he didn't do much to make me care. I'm not offended by the way. I just don't like when people say that because someone is not some kind of 'expert' at something, they can't have an opinion. Kind of like when athletes say "Well he's never played the game so......" But I digress. I hope that's not what I was saying - absolutely you're entitled to your opinion. His job isn't actually to make you like his character - you either will or you won't depending on a lot of factors. His job is to inhabit the character and make him a living. breathing person that could exist in a real world. Often, you can judge whether or not an actor is worthy of praise if you can argue that no one else could effectively play the character as well as that actor, like a similar argument one could make for Heath Ledger this year. Looking back at the Best Actor winners in the last 15 years, I'd say his performance in his the top 3 of that grouping (the others being Daniel Day-Lewis last year and Jamie Foxx in Ray) - but then again, it's just my opinion. Time well tell if the performance and the film holds up.
  10. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 11:00 AM) Even if they are legal (im not sure and its not really relevant to the argument) it does not change that its an issue of fact. Police officers are allowed to arrest people, but if they go to far into police brutality they are no longer protected by the law. If I allege that the Police Officers beat me down for no reason, it doesnt matter that they could legally arrest me, it matters what the facts are. On a Summary Judgment, the facts have to be taken in a light most favorable to the non-moving party (in this case Plaintiff). Thus the court has to take it for fact everything the Plaintiff said, so if they said: "The rancher broke my nose with a rifle" its deemed true. Thats why it was not dismissed, because there are issues of fact. Yes, I don't think anyone has disagreed with this. If the rancher inflicted bodily injury on the illegals, he should answer for it.
  11. QUOTE (Texsox @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 01:25 PM) here's the bottom line. This guy may be one of the good guys, he may not. But sit across from a few human beings and listen to their stories. The women are raped, the children are abused, and the men are beaten when some of these guys catch them. They believe, truthfully, that no one will care because they are here illegally. Most Americans, when hearing of abuses will shrug it off and say, we'll they are dangerous criminals and got what they deserve. So a woman was kicked, or a child was punched, or a guy was pushed to the ground. This is America and people should expect that. That's what we believe in. In many counties, the Sheriff watches and does nothing as this stuff happens. If he does anything, he'll lose the next election. Both sides have compelling stories. This land was part of Mexico. We waged war to take it from them. Then after the war, all Mexicans, even those that fought for the US, were basically screwed over. And that wasn't that long ago. In the Rio Grande Valley up until around 1930 a white man had never been found guilty of raping or murdering a Hispanic. The Texas Rangers were as likely to shoot a Mexican than save him. Sadly, for me at least, a lot of those attitudes exist today. You see it as a brave ranch owner preserving his property. Just as likely, he's hoping for a confrontation and a chance to hassle some "wet backs". If they have money he may accept that as payment. If the women look "hot" he may accept that. Sometimes calling the Border Patrol is the nicest thing he will do. If his story is correct, I suspect he may be somewhere in the middle. To his credit, he did add faucets so people would not break his pumps. Also likely, because I've spent enough time on a working cattle ranch, are live stock busting up pumps and such. He's quoting 10" of trash. Think about that number. Illegals are not staying in one place long enough to generate that much trash. They would have had to carry all that stuff. More often than not, they are carrying a couple one gallon plastic milk jugs for water, and a little food in their pockets. To generate that much trash takes vehicles. I know a couple ranches down here that are hiker friendly. They have many people hiking across their property. I image some may be illegal, I don't ask. But there is no where near that much trash. In fact, most illegals learn to bury/hide their trash to avoid detection. I see far more garbage from teenagers having parties away from the eyes of mom and dad. And while the focus is on the homeowner getting sued, the list is actually longer. From what I just heard, it is the Sheriff that is the true target. What hopefully will come of this is some guidelines as to what behavior is acceptable, and what is not. I'm still not sure why these people can't immigrate LEGALLY. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 10:08 AM) If they're on a payroll (using a fake/ stolen SS), they're paying taxes. They're also paying all sorts of sales tax. How many laid off engineers from Caterpillar or Motorola are going to work minimum wage jobs as dish washers or apple pickers? Considering the 7% unemployment, I'd guess a bunch.
  12. QUOTE (Texsox @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 08:55 AM) Actually, you must not hike or backpack. Out here it is really easy to get lost. Depending on his ranch, it may be easy to to pass from a neighbor ranch to his. I've done it. We thought we were leaving one area of a ranch to another area of the same ranch. Instead it was the neighbor's place. Good thing he was a ask questions first type of guy. Again, there are limits to what people can do to protect their property. For example, booby traps are illegal. You have the same right to keep trespassers off your property. Do you want your neighbor in his backyard pointing a gun at your kids when a ball falls over the fence? Remember he has rights. If your house was broken into three times in a week, would you be justified to sit on your porch and point a gun at everyone who steps on your lawn? And what about the Sheriff who stood there while this man kicked women and continued to train a rifle on these people? You don't have a problem with that? Citizens' Arrests are legal - that's all this was. Don't see how the rancher was not within his rights.
  13. QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 08:35 AM) what kind of question is that? a crime is a crime. its a law. they don't always make sense, although this one does to me. I think you misunderstand me. Lying is not a crime in and of itself. G&T makes a good point though - obstructing justice is a crime. It doesn't seem fair however, especially if you're trying to cover for a friend.
  14. Obviously lying to congress is a big deal especially if you're under oath, but how is lying to investigators (assuming you're not under oath) a crime? This doesn't make sense to me.

QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 12:15 AM) Oh c'mon, you didn't really go down that road, did you? It's your OPINION that Rourke's performance is one of the best in years and since I don't agree, then maybe I don't kow much about acting. It's clearly A LOT of people's opinions too - and again, I meant no offense. It's not always easy to judge something like acting unless you have experience with it.
  16. I don't have a problem with anyone picking the Sox to finish 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, but FIFTH????????? That's just crazy.
  17. QUOTE (CWSOX45 @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 12:06 PM) Other Thoughts: I took a look at other player's VORP ratings. Particularly the Kansas City Royals. Silver has given Alex Gordon (21.0) and Billy Butler (23.0) a higher VORP than Carlos Quentin, who was rated at 17.0. When I noticed that this article lost all credibility. To say that Gordon and Butler will have higher VORP's than an MVP candidate, who missed the last month of the season is a joke. Thanks for pointing this out. That's ridiculous.
  18. QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 06:07 PM) That's besides any arguable point. This discussion is about what is and isn't allowed by baseball. If something isn't allowed at the most basic levels (Federal & State Law), then of course it isn't allowed in baseball. Whether YOU think it's right or wrong is irrelevant. You can THINK the laws against marijuana are wrong, but what you think doesn't matter. The law is the law. Well, I certainly don't follow laws I don't agree with. Do you?
  19. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 05:18 PM) I'm curious. If you were offered a substantial sum of money to kill another human being and you were 99% certain that you would get away with it, would you go through with it? How much money are we talking?
  20. QUOTE (RME JICO @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 08:47 AM) A 15 win drop is huge. I don't see the Sox scoring 50 less runs and allowing over 110 more runs in 2009. Those are pretty big swings considering the minor changes they've made to the roster. A mid-80's prediction seems to be where they are at right now. How in line are these with the WS odds? I can't check from work. On betus.com, they're +300 to win the Division, +1200 to win the pennant, and +2000 to win the Series. To compare, the Yankees are at +400 to win it all. Indians are the favorite to win the division (they're at +200, while the Tigers, Twins, & us are all at +300.)
  21. I can't believe anyone could side with these nutcases (the illegals, that is). Thank god we have guys like this and people like the Minutemen doing the job the Border Patrol is supposed to be doing.
  22. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 05:08 PM) Is it okay to break it rule if it has no punishment? Absolutely. Just don't get caught.
  23. QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 04:35 PM) Recreational use of anabolic steroids has been illegal, by federal law, for as long as I can remember. Something that's illegal by law doesn't necessarily need it's own baseball rule governing over it, it's common sense And just because something's illegal, doesn't mean there's something wrong with doing it, or if the law's right.

QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 11:08 PM) Huh? I decided to try see every film that is up for best picture, or other awards. As far as The Wrestler goes, Rourke has a couple of really touching scenes with his daughter, besides that his performance is nothing out of this world. He might end up winning best actor, because honestly it might be the best performance of the year. As far as all this 'comeback' talk, I'll wait to see what his next two or three projects are like before I call it a comeback. I mean no offense by this -- but maybe you don't know much about acting. Rourke's performance is nothing short of breathtaking in my opinion. One of the best in MANY MANY years. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 08:27 AM) I'm going to see let the right one in tonight. I believe this will be the first Swedish film I've ever seen, but I've heard wonderful things. Ingmar Bergman is my favorite director of all time, and he's Swedish. You'd be doing yourself a favor if you saw Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, or Persona. QUOTE (Texsox @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 09:40 AM) Just wondering, how many here have taken a film studies class and what did you think? Also, which department was it taught in? Well, I have a MFA in Film Production from USC................. so I've taken a few of them, and consider them great, if you have the right Prof.
