OFFICIAL: Sox Sign Linebrink - 4 yrs, 19 mil

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 08:08 PM) I don't think there is a chance Williams is done with the pen. I will be surprised if we don't land Yabuta. Unless all the CF talk has been crap, and no real dollars are spent to fill the hole, the Sox are going to throw some money around this off-season, try and fix the mess they created in 2007. I'm hoping..... -
QUOTE(sircaffey @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 11:26 AM) The current direction? What is that? A blind attempt at competing in this division? Even with Miguel Cabrera, we don't stand a chance to compete with Detroit and Cleveland with our current pitching staff. If anything, I think the perfect fit for the current direction of the Sox to trade guys away. Now that's a winning attitude.

QUOTE(sircaffey @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 11:04 AM) If Uribe ends up at 3B, somehow...I will boycott the Sox until KW is fired. let's not jump off a bridge here. Is Uribe worth boycotting? REALLY?

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 10:50 AM) Fernandez and McDowell had a grand total of 2.5 good seasons combined after leaving the Sox and both made a whole lot of money while doing being bad, especially Fernandez who was an absolute disaster for the final 3 years and $21M of his contract with the Marlins. Wells had to go and they were much better off not re-signing Colon (though that was not from a lack of trying.) The trend with 3 of those starters was big, big money, 1 or 2 good years immediately following their departure from the Sox then they break down and become useless by year 2 or 3. Fernandez won a World series championships with Florida. Wells did not HAVE to go - he several very good seasons afterward, even pitching the Yankees & Red sox to the playoffs. He won 19 games for the 2003 Yankees. Colon has led the Angels to the playoffs several times as well, and won the Cy Young. Long contracts are acceptable if players have won titles, cy youngs, or reached the playoffs. Then it's worth whatever you pay the guy for the seasons he's not so good. Also, what about Foulke and the others? Not re-signing pitching is a MISTAKE. To second guess this is bad baseball.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 10:02 AM) Then find a new hobby, or new team at least. Like it or not, this is how Williams and the Sox operate. They have since 2001, and will continue to do so. Williams will not "rebuild" like so many want. It just will not happen under his watch, right or wrong. I don't know how to make that more clear. So deal with it. Accept the fact that deals trading away veteran players for prospects are going to be few and far between, and accept the fact this club is going to have a large payroll, with a veteran core. They are the facts, and they don't look like they are going to change in the near future. If you can't deal with it, I suggest you find something else to do with your team, because your not doing anyone any favors by posting the same negative, over reactions again and again. Just stop. Get over YOURSELF. If one doesn't like the way this team operates, they don't have to accept it. AT ALL. KW, for all the good he's done, makes mistakes. what's wrong with disagreeing with him? Also, isn't second-guessing part of sports. also, if one were to blindly believe everything a GM does, then we'd sure have a boring message board. And we don't want that, right?

QUOTE(RX Bandits @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 09:58 AM) for all that do not like this deal: Name a pitcher the white sox have been wrong about the last 20 years (ala traded away or didnt resign and amounted to something)? Besides Navaro, this team has not been burned. Fernandez, McDowell, David Wells, Colon, Bradford, Foulke, Howry----- need I go on?
-
QUOTE(dmbjeff @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 09:46 AM) I'm with you man, I like the deal. It always hurts to lose a quality starting pitcher but he had to be traded and we needed a real SS and a #2 hitter. I just hope the kid pitchers(Danks.Floyd and Gio) are ready and to quote Denny Green"be who we thought they were". But lets face it we weren't bad in 2007 because of the pitching as much as it was because of the hitting. Why did he HAVE to be traded? He was the most consistent pitcher we had. Our rotation sucks now. Three question marks, a piece of crap (Contreras), and our ace. Danks and Floyd should NOT be both in there - trade someone to get a good pitcher or two. Now we have two shortstops. Does one get moved to either 2B or 3B? Is this a precursor to a trade for Miguel Cabrera or another 3B? For the record, I trust Kenny. Right now, as it stands, I don't understand this move. But I hope I do in the future.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 03:42 PM) I have, but I thought after the weekend, you guys may have been a bit more positive about the D, but I guess not. FWIW, I think the Packers have a better secondary, as Woodson and Harris are probably argubly the best CB duo in the NFL right now, and I think that's where the edge is. Linebackers and D-Line are more close, although with Urlacher not healthy, and A.J Hawk coming on for the Packers with Nick Barnett, the Packers probably have the edge there too. Our run defense is AWFUL. We can't stop anybody. The loss of Tank Johnson, the injuries to Dvorcek & Walker have killed us, and Adams is terrible. (that's not really a sentence-I know). Also, keep in mind last week we were playing OAKLAND - not exactly a powerhouse. this weekend will be interesting.

QUOTE(bschmaranz @ Nov 15, 2007 -> 02:20 PM) Summer Sanders blows them all out of the water literally?

we should pull out tomorrow - who cares if the Iraqis exlode into sectarian violence and kill each other? btw, what surge? (I'm ignoring it)

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Nov 15, 2007 -> 09:52 AM) Well, all you really need is a couple of hits (or one massive one) and you are set. It's like winning the lottery. I'm sure Gavin is doing O.K., but there is no doubt ( I crack myself up) who is the bread winner in that household. and he's got a kid to watch now that Gwen's running around the world.

Mike Johnson - PWInsider: As I broke exclusively this morning on the PWInsider.com Elite Hotline, there was an incident last night at the Smackdown/ECW taping in Wichita, Kansas stemming from the performances of The Miz and John Morrison on ECW on Sci Fi last night and this Friday's Smackdown. According to numerous sources, JBL gathered several wrestlers together after the taping ended including Morrison, The Miz, MVP, CM Punk, and Matt Hardy. JBL berated Miz and Morrison for their commentary work on ECW, feeling that their back and forth on the show overshadowed the Punk vs. Jamie Noble match and made Punk look bad going into the Survivor Series PPV. He also ran down the pair for their work during a match against Hardy and MVP that will air this Friday on the CW Network. As it was explained to me, JBL was basically standing up for the performers he felt had gone out of their way to make Miz and Morrison look good, only for the duo to not hold up their end by doing the same and making everyone involved look poor going into the PPV. JBL told the two that they needed to apologize to Punk, Hardy and MVP for making them look bad. While Miz was apologetic, Morrison was said to have been angered by JBL's actions, telling the former WWE champion that it wasn't his business to tell Morrison what he was to do. Morrison said that he would apologize but JBL's input had nothing to do with it, cursed at JBL and at one point, physically shoved him away. The shove led to the two going back and forth briefly with John Laurinaitis and other WWE staff separating the two before it could go beyond the shove physically.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 02:46 PM) And here's a question I'll throw out there, is the Packers defense better than the Bears defense right now? I hate the Packers - but have you been watching the games? It's not even close.

Movies that were as good as, or better than, the book
longshot7 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in SLaM
I mentioned it up in the Films thread, but I'll repeat ---- LA Confidential is a perfect movie, and a great adaptation. Black Dahlia (by the same author) is the other way - definitely one of the worst. -
QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 12, 2007 -> 10:59 AM) I said it was good, not Oscar-winning. Besides, when was the last time a screenwriter didn't "gut" a book? You ever see LA Confidential? Also, I saw No Country for Old Men last night. I was VERY disappointed. I won't go into spoilers but the movie was as perfect as a movie can be until this one unforgivable thing happens - and it leaves such a bad taste, it ruins the rest of the movie. I predict that people will go gaga for it anyway - and it will be vastly overrated. Both Javier Bardem & Josh Brolin are terrific though.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 04:34 PM) This clip has convinced me to but the WSX for dad, who is a huge wrestling fan. I bet longshot will get it just to see himself in his AJ Pierzynski shirt as well. LOL - I forgot about that. That show and a similiar appearance on a Howard Stern special are my claims to fame.

Surprised no one picked up on this: QUOTE(spiderman @ Nov 12, 2007 -> 07:54 PM) The latest recruiting tactic occurred Sunday night when general manager Ken Williams explained his plan for reviving the Sox to Hunter at an undisclosed location. We all know how much Al Qaeda hates the Sox......
