Everybody knows that the good guys lost Beaten by the Queen of Hearts every time. Don't you draw the Queen of Diamonds, she'll break you every time. You know you know the Deuce is still wild. Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night. And I've got such a long way to go, to make it to the border of Mexico Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone when the morning comes

Congrats to all you Illini fans. That was very impressive performance today. I'm thinking they'll be playing on January 1. -
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 10, 2007 -> 10:25 AM) ugh, I really don't want to see Romney win the nomination. I don't think Romney can win the election. The bible belt of the south, which has been a Republican stronghold, won't for a LDS candidate. Without the south, he can't win.

QUOTE(rockren @ Nov 10, 2007 -> 10:21 AM) I think that's pretty evident, but the man-crush on Hunter from KW won't go away and we'll be stuck paying Hunter 30 million when he's 37-38. I don't know how evident that is, because I've heard that Jones' attitude is for s*** while Hunter's got nothing but kudos for his professionalism. However, Jones could have learned a lesson this past year because he's potentially not going get a long term mega contract as was expected. Then again, he changes leagues and starts seeing a bunch of pitchers he's never faced before, his attitude may not be an issue as he just might suck anyway.

Jones for one year damn well could be a better option than Hunter for 5 or 6. Something to think about.

High School Parents Trying to Ban Book
YASNY replied to LowerCaseRepublican's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 10, 2007 -> 09:59 AM) I essentially side with Rex here, but more than anything it is that public input needs to go through the proper channels which is whet you're saying as well. The thing is, the notion that the public school teachers - even in AP classes – are lone wolf rebels assigning the most extreme material they can is a fallacy, and a lot of the perceived controversy stems from there. Counties and school boards have approved text and book lists, and teachers have to jump through major hoops to stray from those lists. As mush as you want to support the public right to input, you also have to have some faith in the system that is already in place. And you do, of course. Within a few degrees we all agree that lone parents with no broad support should not hold much sway no matter how bent out of shape they are about course programming. Likewise, you have to have some faith that the system has hired competent AP instructors who are better equipped to select level-appropriate, context-appropriate, and content-appropriate reading for their classes than the average parent. I'll finish by introducing everybody to the elephant in the room. Embarking on a crusade to protect your public school child from a couple of pages of dark, unglamorized human brutality within a literary work is screaming into the wind when you consider the reality of what is discussed on the bus, in the halls, lunchroom, and scholyard at every public high school in the country every day. If a parent has made the decision to toss their kids into a system that would rate an NC-17 for the everyday language and themes discussed, I think efforts to ban a book because a few pages of it descend to that level are misguided and unproductive. Referencing your elephant in the room. I still think that people who pay the freight, ie the taxpayers, should have some say on what is actually loaded on to the truck. -
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 10, 2007 -> 09:51 AM) She gets more and more like Bush every day. To be fair, the question was planted, not the person. Also, supposedly, Clinton did not have any idea that she was calling on someone that had gotten a planted question ... though I would guess that her staffers made sure the person they planted the question with got to the microphone. In addition, apparently, planted questions are a common occurance during pre-primary and primary season. However, the problem Clinton faces is that Iowans, in general, do not go for this kind of stuff. This has the potential to derail her in Iowa. It all depends on how well they deal with crisis management. Iowa and New Hampshire can set the tone during the primary run, so this could be a major screw up. That being said, one of her bigwig staffers has siad that this will not happen again, fwiw.

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 05:33 PM) I absolutely don't support the public to offer input in a teacher's curriculum for an elective class. If a parent doesn't want to expose their children to the coursework for an elective class, they shouldn't be able to reap the benefits that this class can offer. I absolutely completely disagree with you. When a class is taught in a public school, supported by the taxpayers of that community, then that community should absolutely have input into what is being presented to their children, elective or not. Of course, the input should be expressed through the proper channels, like the elected school board officials, and if the community doesn't agree with the decisions of the board they replace it come the next election. -

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 10:09 AM) I have said it before, and I will say it again. If you REALLY want to get people out of their cars, you HAVE to give them an alternative mode of transportation. The decay of the Chicago mass transit system, and the neglect of mass transit in the US is a joke. It sends the message that all of the talk about going green, is just talk. The decay of the infrastructure in the US is a joke.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 05:59 PM) Come on. You can do this with every player on every team if you go that route. This is stretching it a bit. Point is that not many players of use have come from the White Sox farm system. People would complain a lot about all the prospects KW was trading to get proven players in return. Not many, if one, have turned out to be much of anything. You are correct when you say those three are the only players that came up through the system and contributed to the title. I was just trying to add a perspective that seemed to be overlooked. The Sox did in fact draft or sign and develope Reed, Olivo, Moore, Lee, Cameron and used those players in one way or the other to acquire some very key pieces of the '05 team. I wasn't trying to shoot you down. I was trying to add another aspect to the discussion. But whatever, I'll concede to the fact that you are technically accurate.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 08:59 AM) Congrats for being the only one to recognize the now classic Kenny Williams bluff. Its obvious that Kenny is trying to pump up Joe Crede's trade value by trying to say that we done HAVE to trade him. That's all that was. Isn't that exactly what he should be doing?

High School Parents Trying to Ban Book

QUOTE(Mplssoxfan @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 09:49 PM) If you want a challenging class, you must have challenging material. I took a class in High School that featured Giles Goat-Boy by John Barth. I wonder how these parents would have dealt with that? I'm actually fairly certain that not many High School teachers would even try to teach that book. One thing is almost a certainty in this mess: more kids are going to read these books than would have before. I'm sure that's not the outcome that these parents want, but it's going to happen. It would happen over the short term, while the issue is a hot item. Once it's settled and not a topic of conversation then it depends on what was decided as to whether or not more kids read these books. -
High School Parents Trying to Ban Book

This is a very interesting discussion. Great points made on both sides of the issue. I can see where a parent who has an issue goes to the school board. Thats why we elect officials. At the same time, one whack job ranting parent should not be able to influence an entire communities educational system. I believe the school board is the key here. It comes before them, gets dealt with in whatever manner and you move on. -
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 11:37 AM) Viz. Yep. I came up with his name after I posted. But thanks.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 11:14 AM) You may be right. But history also shows us that even those business oligopolies that seem most impenetrable, eventually fall. It may take a long time, and the market forces need to be profound... but it happens. Look at the US auto makers, for example. They didn't let much else in for a long time, and they laughed at the pathetic little Japanese companies who entered the market in the 70's. Now look at where that industry is - Toyota is now the #1 car seller in the United States. Things do change. Just a matter of when and how. And then, of course, they repeat themselves later, in some other industry or place or time. Dude, we are in a GLOBAL market. Meet the new boss, the same as the old boss.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 11:16 AM) They'll over charge us, no doubt. Just for other things, eventually. I am hoping that another aspect to the alternative energy movement is that it results in diversification - that would help to foster more competition and better market conditions. They aren't going to let anyone get a piece of their pie. You might as well forget it. Until they come up with another way to screw us out of our money, it will be oil. When they do come up with something, we'll pay the same piper for the dance.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 11:10 AM) Oh, I agree - I think our whole government (poltical shennanigans in reality) is a sham. Who can out-do the other one to keep power? It's pathetic. But of course, Dems are better then Re-pube-licans and Re-pube-licans are better then Dems. Who keeps power doesn't matter. It's six of one, a half dozen of the other. It'll be the same s*** until the American people ... correction, the people of this Earth ... decide that they've had enough and ... well ... use your imagination as to what needs to be done.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 11:02 AM) It's interesting to note that as oil has gotten to $80, $90, and now near $100, "big oil" is starting to lose money on the actual costs of refining, etc. These prices are too high even for them. Big oil is not going to lose money producing energy. With our system of open roads and suburban homes, we need to drive. They'll either just raise fuel prices to cover the increased costs, or come up with something else they can overcharge us for.
