2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Feb 21, 2012 -> 11:06 AM) You're probably right about the pitching. He'd be wise to let Cooper handle that. Otherwise, it's not like the guy doesn't know the game. A guy with as much playing experience as him will have an idea of when to hit and run, steal, bunt, etc. It'll probably take a bit for him to know his team and what each guy is capable of. Let's just hope he makes the right decisions with the knowledge he has. It'll take Robin time to learn the league. He really should have a grace period from us fans for a while. -
I'd put Sale in the 5 spot in the rotation this year. He'll need a certain amount of protection and he is unproven as a starter.

I don't think even Robin Ventura knows what his managerial style will be. -
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 18, 2012 -> 10:57 PM) So you have no interest in trying to compete next year? Got it. Compete. Interesting word. What's compete mean, actually? I personally always considered a team that is satified to just compete an also-ran. No, the goal should be to win, and if you can't win this year set your team up to win next year. Attempting to just compete can set you up for years of being in the middle of the pack.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 18, 2012 -> 06:38 PM) . . . Or the farm system being in disarray in part because the GM's buddy was purposely signing prospects who had no chance at becoming major league players in order to embezzle money. You have to remember that Wilder was a well respected member of the Brewers organization when the Sox hired him. Hardly KW's buddy. Once hired, KW put a lot of faith in him based on his past performance with the Brewers, which is what they surely had in mind when they hired Wilder. Because Wilder turned into a thief should not be a reflection on Williams. Hmmm, I could easily use a politically based analogy here but since this isn't the Buster, I'll refrain.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 03:09 PM) Herm. I agree.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Feb 14, 2012 -> 10:34 AM) cubs fans must scour the internet to make certain every baseball conversation revolves around them. One Cub fan wrote "cubs is old style" and I'm thinking yeah, like 1908 old style.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 14, 2012 -> 02:05 PM) Not flaming but in discussing posts on this board ... after reading this, this is where I go off about how great Ozzie is and stand up for him and everybody says, 'give it a rest' when I'd just be responding you guys bringing up the old topic of Ozzie again. It goes both ways. I was one of most ardent Ozzie supporters around here, but even I saw it was time for a change. That is not flaming Ozzie, it was just time for both Ozzie and the Sox to move. I believe in 2025, the 20th anniversary of the '05 title, that Ozzie will receive a standing ovation when they honor that team at the Cell.

Rumor? - Cubs deny consider playing at the Cell for 2013

QUOTE (SpainSOXfan09 @ Feb 14, 2012 -> 12:54 PM) Gosh I hope they don't trash it to the point that it reeks of urine!! :( They'd get confused. No troughs. -

QUOTE (dpd9189 @ Feb 14, 2012 -> 01:01 PM) I would think most of the riff-raff would stay up in Wrigleyville. Alot of the 20 somethings who live up that way that only go to the games to drink wouldn't have any interest in going to Bridgeport to watch the Cubs. I don't think it'll be a problem. You'll have your small minority of idiots but that comes with the territory of any sports team. A small minority of idiots? Remember, you are talking about Cub fans. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 14, 2012 -> 12:37 PM) Yeah, JR pretty much said he didn't even have the common decency to resign or ask for a trade. He just kinda cried about it. I'm glad they traded him. At least they got something for him. One thing for certain, Ozzie's time in Chicago had run it's course.
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 13, 2012 -> 12:30 PM) The thing is greg went from being a minority to a caricature of himself after Ozzie's firing. And I do really like greg, maybe it's just the fact that my brother is greg in real life that it annoys me. Ozzie wasn't fired. He was traded.

I remember both Hansen trades, and I remember Tim Cullen. That's kind of sad when you think about it.

QUOTE (Cali @ Feb 12, 2012 -> 02:51 PM) There was a time I would write down when Pitchers & Catchers report on a Calendar. Now, I'd be damned if I know when they report. I just don't care this season and it BUMS. ME. OUT. February 23rd, FWIW. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 10, 2012 -> 07:54 PM) I just don't understand how this is a rebuilding year. Our roster is full of veterans. ss-veteran. 1b-veteran. c-veteran. cf-veteran. dh-veteran. so five of nine position players veterans to go with Tank, DeAza, Gordon and Morel. p-Floyd, Danks, Peavy (veterans) with youngster Sale and journeyman type pitcher (Humber, Zach) for No. 5 starter with a veteran bullpen aside from the young closer (Reed). Crain, Thornton and the others are veterans. How is this rebuilding? The young guys who will be playing (Morel, DeAza, Tank, Beckham) of that group there are two superstar prospects. If those 2 develop into superstars I guess we are sort of 'rebuilding' around them and Sale/Reed, if indeed they are also special superstar talents. I don't see how KW would get a free pass though with a 'rebuilding' tag. Too many vets to not be a contender. If this team doesn't contend, it will be on KW fully since Oz is long gone. 6 young players out of 25 ... and the roster is not set yet. There may be more. That's almost 25% of the big league team. How is this not a rebuild or at least a retool?

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 11, 2012 -> 09:12 AM) I can't believe this thread has now made it to three pages. Agreed. This is more than likely a non-event.
-
Ozzie was gone because he left the building in about August of last year.
-
I haven't seen anything to make me shut up yet.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 8, 2012 -> 02:25 PM) He offered to become a scout. If JR said no to that perhaps KW takes his GM "resignation" off the table. Show me. I have only seen that KW offered his resignation. If you prove otherwise, I'll acknowledge and shut up.
-
When you offer your resignation, you have to be aware that there is a possibility that said resignation would be accepted. It's really that simple.
-
After reading all this crap, let me just say this .... Pitchers and catchers report 2 weeks from tomorrow!
-
If you read Veeck as in Wreck, Ball Four and Moneyball you have a half a century and various perscectives in neat little package.
-
QUOTE (Andrew @ Feb 7, 2012 -> 02:35 PM) What? I think he meant Baskin Robbins. Carl was susceptible to melt downs.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 7, 2012 -> 10:23 AM) It was from Lee Stern who actually is a board member. If you really don't believe BODs give the chairman carte blanche check out my former employer MF Global. If the BOD gave JR carte blanche, it's because they trust him to make wise decisions based on his accumen as a businessman. And in that regard, he has done so consistently. If you love at the Sox from 68 through the 70's, until JR and EE bought the Sox and then what's happened since that purchase, to say nothing of the Bulls, then you should be a big fan of JR>

A quiet leader that does his job in a professional manner, does it well and nevers stirs any crap. Yeah, I can see where that would be pretty good qualifications as a leader. I can think of another fairly recent Sox player who met the same qualifications. Robin Ventura.
