  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 15, 2011 -> 10:52 AM) He'd steal 5 bases against us in the series, no doubt. Probably! Maybe we can get a catcher who can throw in return.
  2. We should trade JP to the Cubs before we play them. For what? Who cares?
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 15, 2011 -> 10:37 AM) But then you have questions about him having to gain stamina again if he's only pitching a few innings every week. It's not an ideal situation, and I don't think for a second the Sox will go through with it. I do follow what you're saying, and it wouldn't be the worst thing. Hense, my comment about giving him a start before the break ... short leash type thing. We'd have the break for the pen to recover if they have to rack up some innings in his start.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 15, 2011 -> 10:30 AM) Who's taking him apart? I have no problem with him saying this (even though it's funny to see how people get so excited to hear him say "grinder-ish" things), it's just that it's probably not in his or the team's best interest to have him be a reliever UNLESS there is reason for him to question his ability to remain a starter. If you look at the schedule, we have days off on the 23rd and 27th. With a 6 man rotation, that really stretches out time between starts. Let him ride it out in the pen, pick their spots to use him, see how he responds. Then maybe give him a start before the ASG, put him back in the rotation after the break. Makes sense to me.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 15, 2011 -> 10:27 AM) This is thing that drives me crazy about Soxtalk. One day Peavy is an asshole for pushing himself too hard. The very next week when he offers to do something to try to help the team, and put himself in a situation to save himself a little more, he gets taken apart. ^ This.
  6. QUOTE (Tex @ May 20, 2011 -> 05:48 AM) So how does a major franchise wind up with a manager and a GM who 2/3 or more of the amateurs can outperform them at their jobs? I wonder how many professional GM/manager combos have outperformed them? I venture to guess not many.
  7. The very best tribute given at the Cell was for Robin Ventura. His first time back he received a standing ovation from the fans. Nothing preplanned or artificial about it.
  8. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ May 14, 2011 -> 01:13 AM) I agree. Jack was an ace. Those are the guys who just make a difference by bringing confidence to a team. There might be 4 aces now in all of baseball. I believe Steve Carlton was a 20 game winner on a last place team. There's really no logic to it. Danks may be one of those guys who will have an impressive ERA but win and losses will be around .500 no matter what team he is on. I feel that way about Zack Grienke. Carlton won, I believe, 27 games for a horrendous Phillies team. That was just unreal.
  9. QUOTE (gatnom @ May 16, 2011 -> 08:41 AM) Ok. The only reason I asked is that your first post was in reply to a post that implied that KW, Ozzie, etc. should be fired because of their performance the last 10 years. Yes it was, and my point is that has been the best 10 years of Sox baseball in my lifetime.
  10. QUOTE (gatnom @ May 16, 2011 -> 08:34 AM) So, because the Sox are merely mediocre instead of horrible like they had been in the past, the entire organization should just get a lifetime pass? I just rolled my eyes at this. NO ... that's not what I am saying at all. I simply said that we have been more successful since 2000 than we ever have in my lifetime. That is an inarguable fact. Period.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 16, 2011 -> 08:30 AM) Its all about perspective. Which is what I stated earlier ... it's my perspective.
  12. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 16, 2011 -> 08:22 AM) Fine, but I just don't think it's right to make comments like you did pretty much insulting fans who want to win more often (which is such a horrible thing to want ). I didn't insult anybody. I just stated a fact. ETA: Yes, I used a bit of sarcasm. That never happens on this board. What was I thinking?
  13. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 16, 2011 -> 08:18 AM) We were garbage before, yea that sucks. But that doesn't excuse the Sox from winning in the future. As a fan, Im going to relish anything we win, but Im not going to excuse the Sox from winning just because of a bad history that unfortunately you had to go through. That's my perspective though. I appreciate this period of Sox history because of all the lean years.
  14. Let's look at this. The 1950's gave us 1959 only. The 60's ... good teams through 67 but nada as far as postseason. The 70's ... gag. The highlight of the 70's was 77 and the defense on that team was garbage. The 80's ... 1983. That's all. The 90's ... nothing. 2000's ... 3 division winners and one WS championship. It sucks to be a Sox fan now.
  15. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 15, 2011 -> 11:43 AM) I'm not getting on anybody. That's what she said. But seriously, I'm looking at the last 10 years of this team's track record. You mean the 10 year period that has been the most sucessful decade in Sox history since the late 50's through mid 60's? Yeah, I hate that crap too.
  16. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 15, 2011 -> 09:06 PM) I might like them more if they weren't done in MS Paint. Seriously though, I don't see any need to alter the current uniforms. I'm obviously biased, but I think the Sox have the best uniforms in sports. Personally, I think the Blackhawks have the best uni in sports.
  17. QUOTE (forrestg @ May 11, 2011 -> 12:36 PM) I have a comment relative to pitchers not getting run support from their team mates. I'll use Jack Mcdowell for example I don't have access to tho I those figures but Jack started on season pitching horribly his earned average started out in the 8 or nines but while he was totally ineffective our sox were giving him all the runs he needed. Here is my question can a pitcher somehow inspire his team to produce more runs? The pitcher is in a way like a quarterback can certain pitchers get more run support than others. Even taking in account where they are in the rotation. S?ome pitchers get run support others do not, personality perhaps, leadership. Black Jack had the knack of pitching to the game conditions. When I think of the word "competitor" the first name that comes to mind is McDowell. If the Sox had 5 on the board, he'd give up 3 or 4. But I recall him pitching against the Twins when he had absolutely nothing, but the Sox won 1-0. The Twins had double digit men left on base ... I'm not sure but I think it was close to 15 or 16. Black Jack was pitcher in every sense of the word and not just a thrower. Don't tell me wins are a meaningless stat because I ain't buying it.
  18. I would definitely become a casual fan. Probably, I might eventually gravitate to the Cardinals because of the area I live and they are the closet MLB team. Back in the 60's, the Washington Senators moved to Minnesota and became the Twins, the DC got a new expansion team that was also named the Senators (they eventually became the Texas Rangers). Under THAT scenario, I'd still be a fan of the Chicago White Sox. ETA: If they moved to Nashville, I'd stick with the franchise.
  19. QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Apr 20, 2011 -> 06:08 AM) I realize it's early but when you lose games the way we did by blowing leads in the 9th time and time again, a losing streak like this was bound to happen. Last nights loss is particularly disappointing. In any event, it's not over, but it's just plain unacceptable and we need to turn things around. This ^. Regardless of optimistic or pessimistic point of views, I think this a cause/effect situation. The failures of the bullpen set up the frame of mind that caused the current tailspin.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 17, 2011 -> 05:49 AM) Cora wouldn't really be a change in philosophy. Bell quit managing because he was sick of the travel. Maybe he is interested in getting back into it, I don't know, but his track record as a manager isn't quite stellar. Of course its not all his fault he's managed rotten teams, but the teams he has managed played a little better or about the same before he came on board and after he left than when he was making out the line up card which would indicate his impact for winning's sake is minimal if anything at all. I've never been an Ozzie guy but if those two are the choices, then I say why fire him. FWIW, Oney has stated if anything ever happened to Ozzie, Cora would never take the job. I don't buy it, but you never know. To be honest, I didn't even think beyond the organization because of JR's loyalty factor. I agree that Cora wouldn't be a philosophy change, but he's not nearly as gregarious as Ozzie, which at this point might be a plus. But, for the philosophy reason, I looked for someone else. Hence, Bell.
  21. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 17, 2011 -> 12:06 AM) It may be the vodka talking, but if it doesn't get better in the bullpen I think it's an idea. If Peavy can't stay healthy in the rotation, maybe a few innings a week as closer will keep him pitching all year. Like I said, I don't suggest it right now, but I could see it if the Santos thing doesn't work out. I had this very thought yesterday. It would give him a chance to rebuild his arm strength and solidfy the bullpen. I'm not endorsing this but it could be an option. A comparable example would be John Smoltz.
