  1. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ May 29, 2006 -> 04:18 PM) I totally agree, wins are the most important stat. 300 wins guarantees you a HOF plaque, a sweet ERA or WHIP do not. That said, since the end of July last season, Garland is 7-8, which is more in line with his career numbers, while pitching for a team that wins often. I think its really being overly optimistic that he really is the guy who was 15-4 at one point last season. I don't think its a fluke that he was 15-4 last year, he's capable, but he's not a guy that will consistently give you the quality to actually expect something like that year in and year out. How about 11-7? Is that overly optimistic? That's about what I expect out of Garland. Maybe 16-10 over the course of a full season.
  2. QUOTE(Felix @ May 29, 2006 -> 04:08 PM) No, its not, but our offense has been better than our pitching thus far this year. Its really hard to find problems when a team is 33-17 The only one that the Sox have is the lack of efficency in their bullpen, which is pretty important. You've pointed at what the real problem is. We are 33-17 but Detriot is 1.5 games better. There it is. It's not the Sox that's the problem.
  3. Sorry guys. I've been around this game enough to know that some pitchers know how to win, regardless of the other stats. Again, it's all about winning. That's all that matters.
  4. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ May 29, 2006 -> 04:04 PM) Why bother looking at a pitcher's record when there are much better metrics available? ERA, WHIP, etc. Because .... Winning is what's most important. Period. If you dismiss win/loss percentage you are dismissing the difinitive stat. It's all about winning.
  5. QUOTE(Felix @ May 29, 2006 -> 03:55 PM) Even with Uribe and Anderson sucking thus far this year, our offense is 4th best in the bigs with 271 runs scored. Scoring runs isn't the problem this year. We are 5th best in the bigs with 215 runs allowed. Is that the problem?
  6. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ May 29, 2006 -> 03:54 PM) That's a great one. The fact is that wins are a team stat. Judging a pitcher's talent by his record is not a good idea. There no no hard and fast rules like you seem to advocate. Jack McDowell was type of pitcher that would pitch to the level of the competition and the game situation. He would win 1-0 games when needed and 5-4 games. The ability to win is damn important. In fact, it's really the only stat that matters. However, I also give a lot of credence to winning percentage in games started, regardless whether the starter wins the games or a reliver gets the W.
  7. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ May 29, 2006 -> 03:51 PM) Shawn Estes 99-90 career record 4.71 career ERA I knew Estes was going to be brought up. There are exceptions to every rule.
  8. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ May 29, 2006 -> 03:46 PM) Wins are a team stat so it's almost pointless to judge by that stat alone. Garland got his last win after giving up 5 earned runs in 6 innings. When you atlking percentage, you are talking wins and losses. A pitcher that totally sucks is not going to have a multiyear positive win percentage.
  9. QUOTE(klaus kinski @ May 29, 2006 -> 03:39 PM) "Happy" Feet or not, good teams need a defensive player like BA to play outfield I totally agree with you. BA has value for this team based strictly on his defensive abilities. I was not suggesting he be sent sent down. I was just trying to identify his problems at the plate.
  10. During Garland's first 3 years as a full time starter, he was a .500 pitcher. Since then he's 22-12 (that's last year and this year). He may not win at that percentage, but I'll bet he'll be better than .500 over the length of his contract. Three to four games a year better.
  11. The Tigers are going to be in it till the end. They are no fluke.
  12. I was glad to see Cotts pitch so effectively, as well as Javy. Fun game to watch. Let's go get the next 3.
  13. I hope he hits 6 to 8 in this series. Those tools in Cleveland didn't deserve Thome for all those years. When he left Cleveland, he left the town completely devoid of class.
  14. I don't get the opportunity to watch as many games as you locals do, so I watching BA closely trying to 'see what I could see'. The 'happy feet' is the thing that stood out for me. He's not planting that back foot, not digging in, like you should.
  15. Back to Brian Anderson, I was noticing during today's game that he has a bad case of 'happy feet' in the batters's box. He seems to be moving all over the place. If you are moving that much, your head is moving too much.
  16. QUOTE(chisoxt @ May 28, 2006 -> 05:13 AM) Look, maybe in a past life I would agree with you, but keep in mind, we won the world series last year, not with hitting but with pitching, pitching and pitching. If we are trying to duplicate last year's accomplishements, our pitching overall has to be as good as last years team. Right now, it's mot. And don't tell me that our improved offense will compensate for the inferior pitching, in the words of Rocky the Flying Squirrel, that trick never works. I love the Rocky reference.
  17. QUOTE(Felix @ May 26, 2006 -> 01:23 PM) Isn't there anything you guys can do about it to set them straight? I mean, if you made a thread about it and got banned, it doesn't look like they care that they steal posts word for word from here, but I gotta think there's something you can do. If they have to steal from us, they are ..... pay attention cwsox and whoever ... TOO f***ING STUPID to come up with an intelligent thread on their own. They aren't worth worrying about.
  18. QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 26, 2006 -> 02:00 PM) John Smoltz for Doyle Alexander. Same.Thing. Larry Anderson for Jeff Bagwell.
  19. I can't get into a discussion about it now, as I have to hit the sack in a few, but I haven't completely dismissed the conspiracy theories. In my opinion, if you just dismiss it without keeping an open mind, you're enabling the one that would actually try to some crap like this. I don't put anything past them. This group may not be holding the smoking gun, but who knows if the next ones won't be.
  20. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2006 -> 01:41 PM) I already have been involved in youth sports for years. I have volunteered as a ref and coach for a long time now, as working with kids at that level is just awesome. I just can't wait until its time to watch my own grow through stuff like that. Before I moved to Kentucky, I managed a team of 13-15 year olds when I was 17. Took a team that was picked to finished last to the championship series. Then I moved down here and played 12" softball until my boys were old enough for T-Ball. My time was done and it was their time. I managed and/or coached for 11 summers with approximately 100 games a summer between my two boys. It came to an end when my youngest died. The oldest, like me, had difficulty dealing with going to the ballpark. But I gotta tell ya, it was fun while it lasted.
  21. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2006 -> 01:00 PM) My days are coming quickly and I can't wait Family over career success, my friend. You'll never regret making that choice.
  22. QUOTE(rowand @ May 26, 2006 -> 12:57 PM) According to the Trib Online (Joey Cora told them this), the replacement 3rd base coach for Cora's suspended games will be OZZIE GUILLEN!!!! YESS! This could be the cool. P.S. GO PHILLIES AND A-ROW. Ozzie would have been my guess.
  23. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ May 26, 2006 -> 12:47 PM) Yeah, both catchers were hurt. Luckily they had Fick on the roster or God knows who'd be catching. I never thought I'd see those words strung together.
  24. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ May 26, 2006 -> 12:44 PM) That's terrific news. The Sox seem to be doing a great job of marketing this team and it's nice to see the front office reaping the rewards for their hard work. Of course, it doesn't hurt when your team wins a world series and gets off to a great start, but still. That's true, but Brooks Boyer was turning the tide before the WSC happened. He's really done a bang up job.
  25. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ May 26, 2006 -> 12:35 PM) You don't have to tell me, Brother. B) B) You are talking to to the assistant coach of THE T-Ball Braves. No autographs, please. Been there. Done that. I miss those days.
