  1. QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 11:13 AM) And yet the Braves got Farnsworth for a reasonable price, same for the Marlins and Villone and even the DBacks and Groom. Maybe it was a dry market or maybe it was a market not to persue the big names. I don't know if we'll regret not replacing Bobby Jenks spot on the roster but we are putting all our hopes on Hermy's achy back and there's a chance for alot of regret there. From what I understand, one of those pitchers the Tigers got is a stud. Would you have traded BMac for him? Maybe we have a Farnsworth quality in Jenks, maybe not. Is Farnsworth a lock down closer ... in Chicago? I think not. Jenks may very well be better for the Sox than we could ever hope for out of Farns.
  2. QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 12:05 PM) Bret Boone has been told he is going to be released. I'm shocked!
  3. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 11:35 AM) I don't ever feel haunted. And I definitely don't ever regret anything I say. Yes dear.
  4. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 11:31 AM) I wonder if purjury is on Palmeiro's plate now? The O's reeling already. This just might finish them off. MLB's way of insuring NY & Boston make the playoffs?
  5. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 11:29 AM) I get the feeling if anyone else said that people wouldn't care. Really. What kind of attitude should he have? Sounds like he's got the right frame of mind.
  6. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 10:39 AM) Want to hear critical... oye ve.. the first time I met Bryan... I'm really into a conversation with him and I'm saying to myself "he's not so bad..." and Jim walks over and goes.. "So Steff.. is this the guy you say sucks..?" Keep in mind I had listened to Bryan maybe 3 times all year and not for more than 3 minutes each time. I was mortified... But Bryan understood. We had a history with Wills... I do listen to Bryan much more now and appreciate him - except when he reaches for that damn net.. . You never know when something you say will come back to haunt you. Does this happen to you often Steff?
  7. QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 10:17 AM) Where would Roberto Alomar fit in on a list of great 2B? Did he ruin his legacy by sticking around when he couldn't play anymore? Not in my mind. He was one of the greatest 2B's of all time, whether he stuck around too long or not.
  8. QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 09:59 AM) The first 5 are obvious and while I was in no rush to trade BMac or Young, but Anderson, Sweeney, Jenks should not have been untouchable. Btw: I'll be quite interested to hear(and it will come out) what the impact trade was that was nixed by the other teams ownership group. I'm betting it was Guardado. One of the Chicago papers said it was Wagner.
  9. QUOTE(Sox1422 @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 09:36 AM) So Blum and Adkins are on the 25-man roster and Harris and Gload go down. But who replaced Thomas on the roster? Gload.
  10. Let me say that my opinion of Joe is not something off the cuff. It has been a long time, accumulative type of thing. I just started noticing things with a comment here, and another one there. So I started listening more closely. It's only an opinion, but it's not one that I will not dismiss lightly or quickly. Edited to add the word "not" in the last sentence.
  11. From a Sox fan's perspective, we can relate to the white flag thing.
  12. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 07:45 AM) I thought that basically all of the MLB was banging his wife. As for Morgan being racist, he and Miller seem to get along fine, and I am not so sure there is a whiter man out there than Miller. Just listen to Morgan talk about player evaluations and comparisons.
  13. QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 08:29 AM) But no relievers of significance will make it thru waivers this yr, there's just too many teams that need them who'll have no qualms about claiming them. I'm definitely disappointed we didn't get a BP arm but that's also tempered by the fact that neither did Boston, NYY, or Oakland. Those 3 are hurting much worse than us by the "non-trades". That said, I'm sure Sammy Sosa will clear waivers. Sosa might get released.
  14. I caught one of those games in Arlington, and it was the one where Garland got rocked.
  15. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 12:39 PM) Similar joke: Cub fan walking on the beach, rubs a lantern, genie pops out and will grant him one wish. The Cub fans ponders for a moment and tells the genie, I'd like to do something that all of mankind could benefit from. Here is a map of the middle east, there is so much war there, I'd like to see peace for all in the region. The genie thinks for a moment and says, this is beyond what a humble genie can do. They have been at war for generations, it would take the biggest miracle. I can't. How about something else? Well I've been a Cub fan for a long time and I'd like to see them win a World Series? The genie thinks for a second and says, "Where's that map again?" Ryne Sandburg used this joke in his HOF speech...
  16. Ryne Sandburg, who I always considered a class act and I don't care if he was a Cub, really ripped into selfish players that tip their caps after a homer with the team down by five runs and are always looking for the red light on the dugout cam. He didn't mention Sosa by name, but we all know .... Phil Rogers' column EDIT: The thread title is taken from the link at the ChicagoSprts site.
  17. There's some logic there, but your pulling this out of left field. Not bad, though.
  18. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 11:20 AM) Perhaps we can turn this into a very intelligent baseball discussion: Is this the last straw? Is there anyone in the world of baseball that really thinks Sammy wasn't one of the most prolific cheaters in the history of baseball? The guy corked and juiced his way to some of the most prestigious records in the history of the game. Is there anything else we have to see from Sammy to known this guy demolished some of the majesty of the game for the better part of the 90's. What is this jokers' legacy? He was a potential 5-tool player and he turned himself into a comic book character. His legacy? A one dimensional buffoon.
  19. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 03:55 AM) Just in case anyone cares I got a theory that the Sox traded for Griffey and that Reds ownership killed the deal. Is this a theory, or is there something you know that we don't?
  20. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 03:45 AM) Right, but having exclusive rights to negotiate a trade would be a reason to place a claim on a player. I just listened to Steve Phillips explain it all on the ESPN replay of the Sox-O's game. I must have not been paying attention to the chatter during that portion of the game, the first time around.
  21. To those of you with GM type minds, think this stuff out. Let's take an example of Guardado. The Mariner's try and run him through waivers. If you are Boston, do you claim him? I'm thinking that if that happens, the M's revoke the waivers. When that happens, Boston cannot trade for EG since he hasn't passed through waivers. If they place that claim, they handcuff themselves. It seems to me that the only time you make a claim, is when you: A. Want to block a specific player from going to a specific team. B. Expect the player to be allowed to go through, so therefore you pick up his contract. I'd love to hear some insight from you guys on this.
  22. It hasn't been a good week for Sox family members named Thomas.
  23. QUOTE(Coyote @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 08:53 PM) Just got in and saw that Iguchi got plunked. Is he hurt, or just resting with a big lead? It appeared to be a "why risk it" decision. I think Iguchi will be fine.
  24. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 08:32 PM) thats what i said until eveyrone on this board poohpoohed that I owe you an apology. I never consider the difficulty we'd have getting our players though waivers. My bad.
  25. QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 08:07 PM) I have quite a few Red Sox ones besides White Sox ones. As do I. From his rookie card on through his career.
