Dougy M works to burn his bridges in Boston
YASNY replied to southsideirish71's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jan 9, 2005 -> 09:16 PM) That seems like a good analogy for you Chicagoians. The guy made millions for years creating the curse, now that the Red Sox have won the world series, it will be interesting to see what crap he comes up with next year. If just looking at him doesn't make you angry, I don't know what does. He looks like Dan Marino. -
As of right now, this team is an unknown entity. It looks respectable on paper, but it's the type of team, that if things don't mesh, can go right into the crapper. Changes certainly needed to be made and I like what KW has done, but it has the potential to totally fail as well as succeed.

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jan 9, 2005 -> 03:17 AM) The reason this was a complete non-issue up until the past couple of days? It's easy Dan Shaunessy is the worst thing to happen to the Boston Globe, ever. He single handedly created what once was the curse, and now without having a damn thing to write about he has to stir more lame controversy. Unbelievable. Boston's version of jay mariotti? -

DM seems to be saying that he knows the ball belongs ( as in, where it SHOULD be) at Fenway. I really don't think he's going to play hardball over this. -
QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 9, 2005 -> 01:12 AM) Has inconsistency this season caused the Bears to look elsewhere for a kicker for 05-06? More than likely.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Jan 8, 2005 -> 12:27 PM) Is it crazy to consider AJ for the 2 slot? He hits for a high average, puts the ball in play, being a lefty probably means he puts the ball to the right side fairly often. I don't think he strikes out too much, but I'm not really sure about that. The only downside would appear to be the double play, due to the lack of foot speed. What does everyone think? Should the Sox try AJ hitting 2nd in Spring Training to see how he does? I have considered this possibility. His lack of speed would clog up the basepaths in front of our RBI men, so this is a no go, imho.

They'll probably introduce him as "catcher Jamie Burke". It's not all that difficult.
-
There probably hasn't been enough time pass for the Sox to actually assign Burke to Charlotte. That may be what their intentions are, but Burke has the right to see what else is available for him.
-
Thanks for clearing that up guys. Getting old is a b**** .... but it's better than the alternative.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 9, 2005 -> 12:35 AM) Beltran rejecting Houston's final offer before tonight's arbitration deadline. Damn. I'm sorry to hear that. But with Boras as his agent, it was expected.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 9, 2005 -> 12:09 AM) That'd be the last thing on Bora$$ mind as evidenced by the events of tonight. What events?

Very interesting rumor. I've been mulling it over as I read the thread. First off, let me say I think I'd rather just sign Iguchi. I have feeling the guy would be good for this team. Now, all financial considerations aside, I'd love to have Ray Durham back. How they would work out the finances, who knows. But on a baseball level, a healthy, motivated Ray Durham is exactly what we need. He'd be perfect to drop in the number 2 spot in the order. A switch hitter that has some home run pop and can handle a bat. With Podsednik on base, the pitcher's are going to be wanting to bring heat to keep him from stealing. Ray will eat that s*** up. He can handle a bat very well, so if Ozzie wants to play bunt or H&R, Ray can execute those. Durham can also get you that key stolen base if you need it. He's not the type of guy I'd want attempting 70 steals a years, but in key situations he'd get to second base for you. Apparently, he had a rough year defensively in '04. He never was great with the glove, but he made himself into a servicable 2B when he was with the Sox. As a worst case scenario, we could keep Willie Harris as a pinch runner/late inning defensive replacement. Again, on a strictly baseball level, I wouldn't object to trading Marte for him. To begin, our bullpen is strength at this point and that number two slot in the batting order is a definite need for the Sox. I also believe Marte has peaked and will never have higher value than he currently does. I know I'm in the minority here, but Marte needs a change of scene. AL hitters are getting to know this guy. I don't believe Durham is worth the money he's got coming, but if something can be worked out, I'd love to see him at second and batting second at the Cell.

I'd have to say Rowand is my favorite, with Buehrle coming in a close second. But there is no way I feel Rowand will ever become a superstar. He's a damn good ballplayer with the right attitude. That's good enough for me.

QUOTE(Chisoxmatt @ Jan 8, 2005 -> 11:19 PM) We got adkins from Oakland in 2002. The trade was Ray durham to oakland for Adkins. It was done right at the trade deadline. Didn't we get Adkins from SF for Lofton? I could very well be wrong on this. My memory isn't what it used to be.

QUOTE(bulokis @ Jan 8, 2005 -> 07:39 PM) Per rotoworld Maggs news. Walker didnt want to sign with us bcoz of his fear of what cubs fans will say. Maggs should have the same philosophy if he respect us sox fans. Magglio Ordoñez - OF - CWS The Tigers have joined the Cubs and Orioles in showing interest in free agent Magglio Ordonez. Ordonez was recently cleared to resume baseball activities and is likely to work out for teams later this month. He might remain unsigned into February. Jan. 8 - 8:21 pm et Source: MLB.com I wouldn't bet on that point of view. He may not sign with the Cubs, but I doubt that "respect for Sox fans" figures into the equation.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 8, 2005 -> 06:18 AM) Bears could have a fight on their hands; They should have been "flying under the radar".

Interesting blurb in Mariotti's column today

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 8, 2005 -> 03:32 AM) Can you imagine Kotex Boy writing for a team like the Tampa Bay Devil Rays or Pitssburgh Pirates. Damn good idea. I like it! -

Another example of why mariotti garners so much respect around here. -
QUOTE(southsider17 @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 04:30 PM) ... which is why I believe we should get Cairo. He hits lefties well. The question is would he come here knowing he may well platoon? So much for that idea.

Wasn't Cairo the principle 2b for the Yankees last year? I know he's not an all star but I'm surprised by rotoworld's lack of respect for him.

QUOTE(whitesox91403 @ Jan 8, 2005 -> 01:28 AM) I'm curious, why not? If he can revert to 2003 form, I would be very happy with that. Most of Everett's stats were accumulated during the first half of '03 with Texas. He was "ok" with the Sox, but not someone I'd want to build a lineup around. Then you get into the issue of "if". I mean, "if" he can get back to being slightly above average .... no thanks.

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 11:31 PM) My biggest memories of Burke were the many throws from the outfield to the plate that he just dropped, before the Hunter incident. It cost the Sox a few games that I can remember. He did seem to have a knack for doing that. :headshake

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 10:45 PM) Okay, say we were to trade Garland and Konerko for him. What if we did that and got Dough Mientkiewicz(seems to be pissed off about PT and Boston is pissed off he won't give back the ball) and also end up signing Iguchi with the leftover dough. Also wouldn't we have money left over(a little bit at least) to pursue a mid season trade??? so PK+ Garland = Vazquez, Iguchi, and Mientkiewicz Batting clean up for the White Sox .... Carl Everett. I don't like the sound of that.
